I don't know what I think about affirmative action. I'm a gay male, I didn't get anything. How is that equal? How many gay men are in the senate? I think affirmative action creates racism. The idea isn't bad, but it should be done differently. Race, sexuality, religion, etc, shouldn't matter. It should be test scores and your socio-economic environment. If you are poor and have higher grades maybe it comes into play. If that happens more people of difference will be included anyway.

I don't know what I think about affirmative action. I'm a gay male, I didn't get anything. How is that equal? How many gay men are in the senate? I think affirmative action creates racism. The idea isn't bad, but it should be done differently. Race, sexuality, religion, etc, shouldn't matter. It should be test scores and your socio-economic environment. If you are poor and have higher grades maybe it comes into play. If that happens more people of difference will be included anyway.

Given the test was for firefighters, which all of them were and had already worked as, and you'd think they'd answer correctly on questions related to their professions, I wonder what the disparate answers were? As a white male, I have certainly seen affirmative action work against me in both college and the workplace. However, I do realize that the color of my skin has probably helped me in many ways that I can't even imagine and that it has been that way for white people for centuries. The effects of slavery are still felt today and that's what AA is partly trying to correct. I think it is our job as human beings, not just white people, to correct centuries of injustice to countless people.

So since education is affected, their test scores have suffered. But it's all attributed to racism and slavery. As for today's candidates being "unqualified", I don't think they are at all. Did Sonia Sotomayor get into Princeton via AA? Sure. But was she unqualified to be there? Not at all. She went on to be an extremely qualified attorney and judge. Who knows without AA if she would've had that same opportunity?

Slavery ended in 1865 and Reconstruction in 1877 but what failed to happen was a way for the newly freed slaves to cope economically with their freedom. There was no attempt to give them land (no 40 acres and a mule) in order for them to stay afloat and stay self-sufficient. As a result, they had to resort to sharecropping (essentially a euphemism for slavery) since they had no land of their own. This ultimately set the ball rolling for centuries of poverty, which affects publc education.

if you want to look at IQ as the reason why minorities are held back, then you have to look at the environmental factors that caused the poor test scores, whether it be the lack of funding, lack of resources, poor facilities, poor teachers, etc. Schools are funded through taxes and the majority of black high schools are in impoverished areas where funding is extremely low. This is one of the legacies of slavery, the inner-city ghettos which are predominantly black.
