Perhaps the primary reason why Senator Bingaman wants to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine is to silence reports like the one Mark read tonight, the one about Bingamans wife getting paid $2.5 million to lobby Congress for Global Crossings while he was a sitting Senator:
Don't believe the hype about how the government should stay out of the debate. Does anyone trust corporate entities to be good corporate stewards, responsible gatekeepers, to care about their customers? Remember what happened to radio when the Telecom Act of 1996 passed and allowed the industry to self-regulate. Companies like Clear Channel bought everything up, payola ruled and all consumers got was a lot of Britney Spears and Rob Thomas.
