(continuation of response below)surprise that many people would not understand the point of this criticism, or how stories such as Pocahontas and Avatar can be so detrimental to the representation of Native people and the true history behind their suffering. I imagine many people will read this post and feel confusion, anger, and disbelieve, but that is only natural considering the largely unknown story of America's continual oppression of Native people.Educate yourself if you don't believe it.
The reasoning behind this comparison is to show how similarly Avatar follows the story of Pocahontas, and the colonization of Native Americans in the United States. However, what is problematic about the narratives of both of the films is the way the Natives are presented - weak and willing to be absorbed and assimilated by an invading culture. With what little knowledge there is in mainstream American society about the ugly truth behind the government's genocide of Native people, it is no
Avatar is diffrent in one important way "The time line" is future not past , when we view a film from the past we think thats behind us now we no longer act in that mannor its an example of our past actions , A film with a future time line "is a symbolic warning example of things to come" The NaVi also defeat the so called sky people (us) with the direct help of nature allowing a few with opend eyes to stay and sending the rest packing (allowing them to leave)
@123allrock ie we're all totally doomed because everyone knows that people are morons and never learn from their mistakes. Or rather, are too lazy to fix them.
@TheWanderingCactus Thats a rather depressing look at humanity , there are plenty of examples of a true change in direction and its true we have very serious issues to address films like Avatar realy do make people take pause and ask some very serious questions about the direction we are heading , we need only open our "own" eyes to see the issues and resolve them while avatar is not a perfect example. its underlying issues hold up to scrutiny quite well if you relate to what was shown.
@123allrock mm, I was being slightly sarcastic, you know. Unfortunately the truth of the matter is that the world is a very complicated place (which is actually reassuring because otherwise life would be bor-ing.) Even well-intentioned "good" people can make mistakes because of ignorance. Still, considering there's been no nuclear holocaust we're actually doing relatively well. I was just thinking about how difficult it is to hold a serious discussion in the comments section :)
Not to mention both Pocahontas and Neytiri are super hot! They are very similar movies. Both really good one's too. The Navi guy that was supposed to marry Neytiri is a lot like Kocoum too.
You people are too dumb and lazy to do your research. Cameron wrote Avatar in 1993 before pocahontas and had the idea since 1988, Cameron put the script in a drawer in 98 when he decided to wait a decade for the technology to do his movie justice.
Pocahontas + Ferngully = Avatar
Avatar - Gay = 1 kickass movie

that's right, Avatar has almost exactly the same plot as Pocahontas and it adds a little bit of Fergully and Dances with Wolves, too.
i like both, but to be honest, i prefer Pocahontas, Avatar is very surreal and doesn't have a great story like Pocahontas have, in my opinion.
