People don't understand in the South, we don't get this much snow. We freak out when we get 2 inches now because we aren't accustomed to it like people northward are. I mean when you are talking 1-3 feet of snow for some of us in the south, that paralyzes us, and the mountains got 5 feet. So it's not that we are weak from storms because we deal with more tornadoes and severe storms than the north gets.
I remember 1993 being an extreme year for weather - to start, there was remarkably heavy snowfall in the '92-'93 winter and plenty of severe weather throughout summer (New England we're talking).
@WebsterJake I remember that too. 92 was a pretty weak winter in NJ where I grew up but 93 was a busy season, and served as a precursor to the insane winter of 1994
@amishmike1@amishmike1 1994 was unusual on the grounds that it had a remorselessly cold winter with an absolutely scorching summer in these parts. That year I actually remember seeing mid-May snowfall. Just wild.
@TheTpanative I remember another "no name storm" of tropical nature in south FL. I was very young sometime between 79 and 82 but I remember it came up Quick and they cancelled school at like 4am that morn....I went to bed expecting to go to school and woke up in a tropical storm!!!!!
I was born during this storm. Its amazing to hear how bad the snow was back then and how bad they still are now. I always remember how my parents talk about the grand daddy of all snow storms. The storm of 78. And how devastating it was.
I was 5 when this happend. It was the greatest thing ever. I still remember building tunnels in the snow behind the house. I'm glad I didn't a job to be at.
I lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama when all this happened. I remember school being out for two week b/c the buses couldn't get down all the dirt roads where I lived. Now, 18 years later, I'm freezing my butt off in Kentucky and, lo, it's supposed to snow tonight. Hmmmm. Seems I've been here before.

You should see all of the very ill informed making replies on other videos saying this was not a blizzard in Ga. LOL This coming from people who have probably never set foot in Ga, let alone know what happened.
Winter 2010-2011 looks to be mild in many areas as heat and dry conditions have played a major role this summer.
I am sticking by this forecast because I have investigated years where summers were hot and when summers are hot and dry, winters tren on the mild side.
@padude64 You are correct. It is because the ground is not saturated with Moister. Then agian it depends on the area you live and warm our oceans get as well. These can have an impact on our Jet stream both Subtropical and Polar.
@padude64 That doesn't mean anything. The summer of 2002 was hot but the winter of 2002-2003 was very cold and snowy across the eastern U.S. This winter may be mild, but it has nothing to do with the fact that this past summer was hot.
I hope this year is like that since in my home in ontario canada last year we had only one snowstorm so no snow days at all. I also lost money in my snow shoveling buisness I dont mind shoveling but not 4 feet thats crazy. Will this year be like the 08 winter or 07 those had a lot of snowstorms
@Niyologist wow thats really late in the season by then we can have a early snowstorm like last 2 years in october we had one if you can recall, i know i remember because i was in school and every one going crazy since it wasrain/snow mix.
@justintime2989 I used to be a weather major, but I switched to chemistry back in 2006. I love chemistry , but I still love weather too. This Superstorm was especially incredible!
@DiegoMarradona76 Hello. Well, I had some crappy physics teachers, so it made me hate physics. I loved chemistry cause my chem teachers were great. So meteorology is all physics, so I decided to switch to chemistry, and I'm glad I did.
Meteorology is a very tough major. If you do decide to pursue it, then get ready for long and rigorous hours of studying. It's is a lot of math and physics, so know what you're getting into.
@TheMiguelvalles Oh man thats what I thought. Im in Physics 2 right now. It's not that hard but classes of like 200 plus kids in it makes it hard...the professors dont really teach you anything and it's almost useless going to their lectures so I know exactly where your coming from. I basically had to teach myself in Physics 1 by just studying my ass off. Looks like I'll stick to my current major exercise science ha. Thanks for the reply
i was on my way to fla. for the 1st time from indianapolis. 12 hour trip took 23 hours.they were closing the interstate right behind us.each exit we'd stop at told us it was 2 exits behind where we were at the time..talk about timing.wiping out then pushing/digging out and kept rolling on 5 mph through the south east. we made it to fla. for spring break though.
@Niyologist I was in New York when the snowstorm of December 2009 came. Do you remember that one? It dumped about one foot of snow. After I left the northeast saw two or three more powerful snowstorms. You may very well be right. Weather models are becoming more accurate and reliable. It would be interesting to see another superstorm.
i wasnt born when we had this blizzard but it snowed today in birmingham and since were out of school SNOW DAY YEA (rare u see a snow day in bama) my mom started tellin the story of the blizzard in 93 i thot it wuz so cool so i been watchin these vids i wish we had another one like it it would be so much fun!!
in 93 during this storm, my cousin called me from school to tell me he was walking home, it was only a 10 min walk, i told him not to and to wait until it got better outside but he said he could make it,.. i havent heard from him since!
I remember this storm, I drove a toyota tercel hatchback. I ended up cleaning off the back and climbing through to move it. When we started shoveling we couldnt even see the car, the snow was chest deep or higher. Oh, the good old days
my cousin was born on the 22nd but my aunt was still a nervous wreck from what I heard because what if she had gone into labor and it was impossible to get to the hospital because of the weather. I was like, 4 during this blizzard btw. I kind of remember it. I live in Western NY.
What a southern snow storm in Alabama. I remember living in the country with just my 8 yr old daughter and trees falling all around the house....no electric....no heat. I was scared silly. Glad to see the morning come.
This was a huge blizzard in the south, I understand that but this wasn't a real memberable one up north. The Blizzard of '78 was the Granddaddy off them all.
I live in Brooklyn and I remember how much snow there was on my block, and then how all the cars were covered in solid ice.
I'll never forget the blizzard of '96 here in NYC. The snow on my block was high enough that I was walking on top of cars without touching them and my school was closed for a week!
I drove to Birmingham, Al on that Friday night for a 2 day trip from the Atlanta area. It started snowing in Birm around 7pm on Fri night, when I woke up at the hotel at 7am there was 16 inches piled up outside. I called home to Atlanta and it was just rain most of the night but it turned to snow around 4am. I was stuck in Birm for 5 days. One week later it was 80 degree's
That is correct, no power, and no running water for some reason. All stores were closed, so no food. It went down to 10 degrees Sat nite outside at nite, the room hotel temp was in the 30's.
I miss the Old Weather Channel Format. This 1993 footage is about the time that the Weather Channel started to become more commercial /corporate. Where is weather Will? Mark Mancuso?
I was born and raised in Syracuse, so I know about snow. Me and my sister were shoveling snow when the blizzard starting. I had to go out in it about 9 at night with my family to clear out a parking lot to put cars in there so they didn't get towed. I woke up the next morning and the first story of my old house i stayed in was covered. The cars were covered when we went to unbury them. It was crazy but cool.
i rember this pa got heavy snow it was pretty wild the snow melted a few months after till april came around caused some flooding i belive. i was out of school for about a week cause of this storm sucked cause i missed half my summer we had to make up the last days missed cause of the snow.i feel old remembering this is was only like 16 at the time this happened. memories.
We've got 10" of snow in Richmond,VA a couple weekends ago. The last time we've had a snow this big was 2000. Since 2005 our weather has stunk. For the past couple of years the south has seen more snow than Richmond! Finally.
I was in Reading PA in 12th grade when this storm occurred...I have very fond memories of it! We had about 15 or 18 inches from it...a lot around here! It was FUN!!! I LOVED IT!!!
I was 11 living in Philly. The only thing i remember about this Blizzard was it a sloppy one. U couldnt play in the snow cause it was too slushy. It rained in between, and too windy to stay out. Blizzard of 96 made this look like a snow flurry. Those were the days though.
i was six when it happened. i was in birmingham and i remember us loosing power and being shut in in the house i also had fun playing in the snow. i will never forget those days.
When you have a storm as this in March, and when all jet streams come together, you have trouble as tornadoes struck Florida where they unfortunately killed many inncent peole!
The major snows acros the south and the mid atlantic I will never forget!
People in the Ohio Valley as well as Baltimore and NYC are asking, What kind of pattern is this?
It is January of 2009! Our National Weather Service in Pittsburgh are calling for 1-3 inches tomorrow night which is Wednesday night but I do not believe them! If Spokane gets the snow, the central and south Atlantic gets soaked!
To develop a storm of this magnitude, you need all 3 jet streams, The Arctic, the polar and the subtropical to come together to form a monster in the Gulf! This year in 2008-2009 sucks for Pittsburgh! We cant buy a snowflake!
This is the most severe blizzard I remember...living in the NYC suburbs, it was literally the only time I left my apartment as a 10 year old kid and could not see two feet in front of me (that was how blinding and heavy the snow was).
It was literally dangerous to walk out the door that day in the Northeast
Winter sucks now! All we get here in NYC is about 5 inches of snow or sleet for the whole winter. The rest is just sunny or cloudy with highs in the 40's and 50's, that's digusting! Let's hope that winter 2008-2009, we will end up like up to 60 inches of snow for the whole season!!!
I remember living in anniston alabama at that time, that morning it was nice and then it got colder and darker and starting snowing around 4 or 5 in the afternoon and NEVER STOPPED. We got a ton of snowm and were without power for a couple of weeks. great video and reminds me of my young years.
I made a big snowball from this storm and my mom vacuum sealed it and it is STILL in the back of their freezer, although a lot of it is gone; it's about the size of a golf ball now.
man i remember this well... historical storm!!! living here in jersey i never saw one like this...snow fallin heavy with 70 mph winds and thunder and lightning... i think we wound up with 27 inches of snow..
man this takes me back. we moved to rockville, md that march, drove there from oklahoma city with all our stuff. took our time but about halfway we saw the weather reports. about the time we got to the md panhandle, the conditions were horrible - couldn't see 5 feet in front of us, and the heater and wipers were trying to konk out on the car. crawled at a snail's pace for a two or three hours, chilled to the bone, til we came upon a mcdonald's in the middle of nowhere. they served soup! haha
with a heat index of 105 right now where i am in springfield missouri, i'm looking up snow stories. makes me feel good. i'm one of the rare people who love winter. i hate summer. i see only 3 things good about it, the shoes, the produce and being able to just get in the car and take off. i'm an indoor girl. summer sucks.
I remember this a bit. I was only 3 years old at the time. When it hit near Huntsville, close to where I live, it was a bunch of snow. I also remember building my first snowman during that snow storm, too. Ahh, that brings back memories.
I was Living in Montgomery Al woke up during the early Morning Herd thunder saw the lightning thought to myself... hmmm severe Thunderstorm no big deal... NOT!!!! saw snow on the ground and said NO WAY... called a friend in Birmingham she told me that the local police had to drive her to work in a
Wow, This storm was exciting and scary at the same time, we had three days of rain down in florida, we had water in the house, not much but I dont want to go through that again.
I live in the Anniston-Oxford Metro on INTERSTATE 20 between Atlanta and Birmingham its bout 60 miles east of bham in alabama and about 70-80 miles west of Atlanta. I was fixing to turn 5 we lived on Coldwater Mt. The base mountain of the apalachian mountains. We had 13inches ALL roads were shut down. We was stuck in and had no power for 5 days and had drifts of snow 7ft on the mountain. Imagne what it was like on Cheaha in AL. The highest point in bama just south on my city.STORM I WONT FORGET!
I lived in Charlotte when this happened. I was so shocked to experience weather like this. We got 9 inches of snow. Being from Ohio, I thought I had gotten away from all of that bad weather. The kids absolutely loved it! Lots of snowmen!
We will get another SuperStorm like this but instead of tracking along the I-95 Corridor, It will track like a Classic Nor'easter. I will see this happening in this March or this December. This will give the Major Cities 3'+ instead of 1'+. I will be seriously happy if that happens.
Down in Florida was like a hurricane with 7-11 feet of storm surge washed ashore in my hometown just north of Tampa. The squall line that came in at 4:00 am that day was the biggest and by far the strongest squall I've encountered. Tampa reported 96 mph wind gust, with lots of damage reported through the area. It was gusting over 50 for much of the day. With all the Trop.storms buzzing by through time, the March 13th storm still is the worst storm this area has seen in years, if not decades.
This year is following a LaNina pattern, the polar opposite of one of the many triggers of that fateful storm. I lived just outside of Hartford, CT at the time, being only six years old, but I never remembered there being so much snow.
@patsfan3700: As far as I know, 1993 was a La Nina as well{could be wrong, though}.
Now, this year, we're almost in the middle of an El Nino. And I was in that major snow storm we had a few days back{I live in TX}. I wonder if the severe weather season will have a late start over here?
Yea it was hard core, it happen the day after my B-day March 13 1993. it do not snow like thos anymore

I woke up the next morning and the first story of my old house i stayed in was covered. The cars were covered when we went to unbury them. It was crazy but cool.

We've got 10" of snow in Richmond,VA a couple weekends ago. The last time we've had a snow this big was 2000. Since 2005 our weather has stunk. For the past couple of years the south has seen more snow than Richmond! Finally.

We got 16" of snow in Western Tennessee.. no blizzard. But the most snow in 40+ years.

bowtech333 3 years ago
not likely to ever see a storm like that again
bowtech333 3 years ago
We will, within the next 20 years. They will become more and more common, until we shrug at 3 feet of snow. Yeah climate change!
classicrock5 2 years ago
I do not think this will become more common but to see this again in the next 20 years is prolly a 50/50 chance
bowtech333 2 years ago
@classicrock5: I'd agree with you...........climate change can go both ways you know ;-).

I was 11 living in Philly. The only thing i remember about this Blizzard was it a sloppy one. U couldnt play in the snow cause it was too slushy. It rained in between, and too windy to stay out. Blizzard of 96 made this look like a snow flurry. Those were the days though.
smartass2st 3 years ago
yea i remember this storm pretty well it snowed sideways the whole time , but 96' storm dumped more snow
bowtech333 3 years ago
i was six when it happened. i was in birmingham and i remember us loosing power and being shut in in the house i also had fun playing in the snow. i will never forget those days.

When you have a storm as this in March, and when all jet streams come together, you have trouble as tornadoes struck Florida where they unfortunately killed many inncent peole!
The major snows acros the south and the mid atlantic I will never forget!
padude64 3 years ago
I am still monitoring a possible jet stream phasing for winter storm development in and around Tuesday and Wednesday 13-15th! 2009!
Let's hope the northern branch of Arctic jet does not speed up!
padude64 3 years ago
2008-2009 may go down as the biggest snow drought in Pa history!!!!!!!!!!
padude64 3 years ago
This very rare storm was so significant due to the fact that all jet streams collided and they collided in the perfect place,,, Along the Gulf coast!
padude64 3 years ago
People in the Ohio Valley as well as Baltimore and NYC are asking, What kind of pattern is this?
It is January of 2009! Our National Weather Service in Pittsburgh are calling for 1-3 inches tomorrow night which is Wednesday night but I do not believe them! If Spokane gets the snow, the central and south Atlantic gets soaked!
padude64 3 years ago
To develop a storm of this magnitude, you need all 3 jet streams, The Arctic, the polar and the subtropical to come together to form a monster in the Gulf! This year in 2008-2009 sucks for Pittsburgh! We cant buy a snowflake!
padude64 3 years ago
I remember this monster storm -- i was in Portland, ME then and totally snowed in at home...craziness!
UNIXg33k 3 years ago
You hear that!? It takes HEART to shovel snow.
gavinovz 3 years ago

LightningFever86 3 years ago
we are pass due man i feel your pain i remember this storm i didnt go to school for 1/2 month
PilotMaster7 3 years ago
Ha ha, 60 inches?? Here in Maine it isn't really winter until we've got over 100!
premeddude 3 years ago
Yeah, I know! That's because you live in a different climate up there. That's why 60 inches doesn't seem as much to you.
LightningFever86 3 years ago
100 inches still isn't much. We need about 120 to be good. It isn't really a storm until you get 8-12, haha
premeddude 3 years ago
You gotta look though, here in Tennessee, just a couple inches (now) in Tennessee is a "bad winter" because we aren't used to it.
ericsummey95 3 years ago
At least you get snow! Here in Tennessee, snow hasn't even stuck to the ground since last winter, and that was only 1 inch!
ericsummey95 3 years ago
oh, so sorry to hear that. but, i still like summer better because i feel more free and happy, do you?
LightningFever86 3 years ago
no, i love cold and snowy weather!

man this takes me back. we moved to rockville, md that march, drove there from oklahoma city with all our stuff. took our time but about halfway we saw the weather reports. about the time we got to the md panhandle, the conditions were horrible - couldn't see 5 feet in front of us, and the heater and wipers were trying to konk out on the car. crawled at a snail's pace for a two or three hours, chilled to the bone, til we came upon a mcdonald's in the middle of nowhere. they served soup! haha

padude64 3 years ago

I lived just outside of Hartford, CT at the time, being only six years old, but I never remembered there being so much snow.
patsfan3700 3 years ago
@patsfan3700: As far as I know, 1993 was a La Nina as well{could be wrong, though}.
Now, this year, we're almost in the middle of an El Nino. And I was in that major snow storm we had a few days back{I live in TX}. I wonder if the severe weather season will have a late start over here?
JohnnyDart76 1 year ago
@JohnnyDart76 There was a Weak El Nino during that time.
