1979 & 1980 in my book were the 2 greatest years in the history of the music industry & The Pretenders debut album captured the new wave & punk sound like no other.I could listen to the entire album over & over again. This is outstanding footage !
tragic that after losing such great performers like Jimmy and Pete Farndon and a brilliant debut album they became shite ending up with that abomination "I'll stand by you"
It's a good thing Martin didn't join Guns 'n' Roses after all... The Pretenders wouldn't have been the same without him. They probably wouldn't have come so far aswell perhaps
Honeyman-Scott's chorused sound is totally happenin' - I heard he used to use a Clone Theory pedal, does anyone else have any secrets to his bitchin' sound?
@wrf1973 From an old Guitar Player magazine interview:
What did you use to get that sound?
At that time I was using an Ibanez Explorer that was fantastic – it was stolen. It was incredible. That went through a Marshall. And to get that sound, I was using the Clone Theory pedal made by Electro Harmonix. That’s how I go the sound. And I’m now using the old Boss pedals.
Fantastic early gig, wish I could get my hands on the whole set! BTW I got mystery achievement on my channel from this show. If anyone knows where the entire gig can be got please let me know :)
@microvibe after the original two passed on the 'institution' that was the Pretenders became a tribute band . That original album was the work of the first 4 and nothing fropm the band since has come close. Pure and simple the downside of the rock and roll lifestyle destroyed the original band. The tragedy is the loss of two young lives , thats MUCH bigger a loss than the impact on the band
Yuke, lighten up, Just cause you weren't strong enough to get through YOUR teen years, you shouldn't project that on to others. I partied my way through the 80's and had a BALL! Good times, good friends, and god memories! My friends and I STILL fondly recall crazy tales of our youth with joy, and laughter. Sorry you can't say the same. But that's YOUR problem, go to a meeting and stop preaching to healthy people!.
pretenders had a unique sound back then there debut is definitely worth adding to the collection of compact discs i own. these old cd's cost a lot though
@barettadreams - thanks for the band / recording history.
Lots of comments re missing Jimmy and Pete and how it was more a real band then - all true. My fave live video too, of The Adultress, with that lineup.
Still, my fave Pretenders album is Learning to Crawl. Great attitude, lyrics, writing, playing, vocals. My City Was Gone says it all, and has one of the coolest all-time bass lines ever. Time the Avenger, Middle of the Road, almost every track is great.
Wow, everytime I hear the song it hits me like a truck. I was an out of control mad man in high school when this song was on KMET and then the lead guys die? Since I found my mind and heart and seeking Jesus now I pray for Chrissy for she's too gifted not to know her creator, ya? And you young rockers, learn from this band cause like a blink of an eye it can just fade.....
it's great that particular version of religion helped you yuke, but the artists/muscians 'imagination' gets them in touch w/the 'God force/energy/cosmos of the Universe very well. I know that won't make sense to you and that's okay. Chrissie's doing well, she even has a vegan restaurant in Ohio!!
This is a video of the Pretenders. When Jimmy Scott died the Pretenders died with him.Everything after that is Chrissie's back up band. The band could have replaced Pete Farndon, but not Jim Scott. He was the heart and soul of the band.I love Chrissie Hynde but without Jim Scott's guitar the music simply never had that kind of passion again.
@Supernova64 I so agree! He was such a remarkable guitarist and is still missed alot today! I really wish I had gotten into them earlier so I could have had the chance to seem him play with her... but alas I didn't. I did get to see her on the Back On the Chain Gang album tour. It was still awesome... but I would have loved to see the original line up!
@SandpiperN121PP Im only a mdrummer :) but think he sounds quite a bit like another great player of the same time.. Andy Summers. Maybe its that chorus effect that was new at around that time ?
@doubts Chorus pedals had been around since maybe the very late 60s, to simulate the double-tracking people would do on records, but Honeyman-Scott and Summers definitely helped popularize it, along with the Roland Jazz Chorus amp which was hot at the time. Both were guys who could already really play and loved 60s pop who were working in the punk/new wave framework and had a superior grasp of space and texture. As a kid they lit me up when I heard them on the radio for the first time. Faves.
ok i saw them open for the who in 2006 and they were incredible, very emotional...i saw them again in 2007 w/ a bunch of other bands-stray cats, joan jett, reo speedwagon and zz top, and they were a little sloppy in places but hynde was very funny.
I loved those early albums too. Its all gone very corporate now, not just The Pretenders , but the whole scene, and just try and get a ticket for a big gig before they all appear on bloody ebay
Its just the early albums really move me,thats not to say I hate everything post 1982, theres lots I do like, but I like the rawness of the early stuff, just my preference. We can't all dig the same era now can we, its all good.
But I'd love the chance to change your , I'm a pretenders fanatic and I've heard things the studios don't even know about. And Just want you to know they never lost it. They've had some fatigued moments, yes but they've been ferocious ever since.
I have to agree with patriotcom here. Although he's not particularly animated in this particular video, James Honeyman Scott's fiery guitar playing was what made their first 2 albums stand out.
When he died and was replaced by Robbie, their level of passion & energy took a nose dive and never recovered. His style and influences are totally different than Scott's, and I think most people defending their subsequent music probably aren't old enough to remember the halcyon days with JHS.
Yes, this song -- and these two guys -- were an early 1980s classic. I remember putting my speakers in my dorm window at Ohio Univ. and just cranking the HELL out of this album.
Ques.: Can anyone post a copy of the promo/studio version video of "Mystery Achievement" -- it kicked serious butt, and no one seems to have it. :(
Mystery Achievement is my fave song off this first album, but Up The Neck, Precious and The Phone Call are all great. Heck, the whole album is excellent!!!
I thought this was new footage till I saw Pete and James. OMG... they were never the same after. those two were crucial. I remember my friends calling me when James died. what a loss.
Could not agree with you more. If a 14 -21 year old saw the original video for Tattooed Love Boys, the "Industry" or who ever is in charge, would sell some "product".
@baryogenesis i'm totally behind on this ... i was wondering why there are so few vids of them up on this thing.... why have they all been removed ???o.o x(
saw them at Hammerheads , a small club on Long Island in September , 1980. Great show! Marty was throwing drumsticks out to the crowd like missles. Instandly impressed with this young band.
agreed. I always thought this was the best song on their debut album. It's explicit and overtly sexual but sounds like a song that could have been written in the 60s.
DJ Name76 YOU SAID IT!!! I was too young to GET THEM (and wouldn't have been old enough to see them, anyway, less someone had dragged my 13-year-old lousy *** to the Royal Oak Music Hall or something like that) when they were here as the original band. I saw Chrissie in 1984 and it was exciting, but it had changed and it became like she was a solo singer-songwriter who just happened to have a band. Ya know. You SAID it. My best to ya!
I'm just so thankful that we have these videos. The Pretenders were one of the greatest rock bands of all time. James and Pete were world-class musicians, and we have so precious little of their genius to enjoy. So I just enjoy what we have!!
I'm seeing them play in LA tomorrow night (Dec 10 2008)--my first Pretenders show since 1981!~ I'm REALLY excited to hear the old and new songs, and to be in the same room as one of my all-time favorite bands!
Well Pete did Die; but, thats not why he wasn't in the band.
He was kicked out before his death; then Jimmy Died two days later.
The Malcolm foster and Robbie Macintosh came took over For learning to crawl; then she dismissed Malcolm and Martin for Bernie Hall T.M Stevens and Blair Cunningham for "Get Close" she got rid of them because she didn't think they fit a live standard (though Martin and Malcolm remained for the cover of "Room Full of Mirrors).
Chrissie Brought back Malcolm for some tour stuff and then went on hiatus for a while. Came out with "Packed!" which featured a host of Session drummers; most of them people she worked with before.
The Live unplugged/not unplugged album "Isle Of View" came next; with the revelation that Martin Chambers was back in the band; along with Adam Seymour on guitar and Andy Hobson on Bass guitar. "Last of The Independents" came next; some of the songs featured Chambers and Seymour...
Other songs had session players; one song even featured Robbie Macintosh back on lead guitar, ("I'm A Mother). The album brought a number 1 song, "I'll Stand By You" This now is included in the pretenders list of hits along with "Brass in Pocket" "Talk of the Town" "Back on the Chain Gang" and "Don't Get Me Wrong". The next Album "Viva El Amor" still featured some session players; but, kept the previous line-up. It had moderate success with the song "Human" a cover of the Divynls original.
A few years later "Loose Screw", A reggae based Album was unveiled on a new Record Label: Artemis, (which folded a few months later)featuring the same line-up making the Chambers, Hynde, Seymour and Hobson incarnation of the pretenders the longest running version of the band; However, this was short lived; Hobson was dismissed or left the band and was replaced by Nick Wilkinson.
The Band would then release a box set of the band's career from 79-2002 called "Pirate Radio"
Pirate Radio included 4 DVD's some with unreleased bonus tracks; demos and others and a DVD of live performances from 79-2002. The Band then announced a tour focusing on the Box Set doing many older tracks including "Porcelain" and "Cuban Slide" live for the first time in nearly two decades. After finishing the Pirate Radio tour the band rested and announced there would be a new album shortly; however, Adam Seymour would not return for the next album instead being replaced by James Walbourne.
Walbourne would be added as well as a steel pedal guitarist, Eric Heywood for the next album "Break Up The Concrete". Martin Chambers would not play on the album instead famous session drummer Jim Keltner would take his place; (though Chambers still plays liven on tour with the band). Concrete is the 9th Studio Album for the band and they are scheduled to go on tour early 2009. They have already done a few promotional shows in Baltimore; L.A., Hollywood and New York City to rave reviews.
I was in 11th grade snuck out and went on an all night rampage. I was suffering on my way to school the next day and almost drove through a red light 1/2 asleep. Left school at 1st break made it home to bed. Wake up at about 2 pm sometime in Sept, beautiful day. This song was playing in the garage next door. I came across it when she said "hit by a truck" Funny how a song can plant in your mind, I'm 45 now, I was 16 then and can still feel the day, and how I felt out all night hit by a truck.
this is better than the album version! But i wonder why it says "up neck" instead up "up THE neck" at the bottom and "chrissie hynde" instead of "pretenders"?
Excellent video- great sound. This lineup was the best..saw them at RI College in 1981..a tragedy. Chrissie still a great songwriter, but nothing can touhc these guys.

Although we can't turn the clock back, I would have loved to have heard Jimmy, with Robbie or Adam in the Bands lineup at the same time.
On about making a great band better.
Now that would of rocked!
Great to see accurate information being posted.

As the Named User of this channel, surely it's not too much trouble to add a little information regarding the history of this clip.
