  • thank you so much for posting this great video it has improved my crochet and such a relief to have tidier work

  • Great techniques. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • Thank you so much for showing us how to change colors. I am having difficulty with my latest project: a baby blanket with a cartoon character. I can do the color change you showed in the beginning and the end of each row but in the middle part where I have to change up to 3 or 4 different colors after two to five single crochets on some rows, I am left with so many tails to weave after I'm done with this project. Help, Megan!

  • @deadstar1999 However many colours there are, mulitply that by two and that is the minimum number of ends you'll have to sew/work in. It is more if you have to finish off a colour in one area and start it again somewhere else because it is too far to carry it along (or up) as you work. You need to analyse the pattern to see where you can carry the colour to other areas of the same colour - ideally keeping it 'hidden' as go by using the methods shown in my video. (Think like a cross-stitcher.)

  • @deadstar1999 You are the best, Megan. Thanks for a fast reply. I'll do my best with what I've learned from you.

  • I am so thrilled Megan, with your tips and skills. It is truely amazing. If you have any other's please share. These tips make all the difference. Thanks again!...Patty

  • So Brilliant, Megan!! Thank you for being so kind and generous in sharing these techniques. I'm self taught and have taught others to crochet for years. I could never answer their concerns about the ends of rows. I can't tell you how wonderful this is.

I agree with you about the starting chain. I like to crochet into the ridge always, unless there's a specific reason not to.

Again, thank you, thank you. Love, Light and Many Blessings! :0)

  • Megan, you are a genius! Thank you.

  • Megan, I have tried to go to the web sight you listed and my computer says that there is no web sight. Do you have another link?

  • @grammissy I'm not sure which site you're referring to... my main one is meganDOTcc (where the DOT is a '.') but I also have meganDOTkiwiDOTgenDOTnz Does that help? Regs... Megs

  • Megan, do you have any more videos?

  • @grammissy Just a few, most are under my name but one or two appear under my husband's (Clark Mills) dating back to way before I had my own account on youtube.

  • excellent tips many I knew, but a few new things even for experienced hookers:)

  • It's really unfortunate that at the 2 minute mark, you can better tell what she's doing because her hands go off camera. :-( I'm really curious about that edge trick, but I can't tell full what she was doing.... yeah, I'm a newbie.

  • @afropoppette At the 2-minute mark I'm just showing what the usual instructions tell you to do. I undo it because I don't like it. If the other part seems a bit unclear pause the video move-by-move and don't worry about what my hands are doing - just aim to reproduce what the hook and yarn are doing. With a little bit of practice you'll be like a seasoned pro before you know it. Regs... Megs

  • I'm left handed and the only thing I can say to this is "huh? 0.o" thanks for posting but I think I'm gonna have to call my aunt to show me this.

Left handed + Crocheting = FAIL xD

  • @SakiWatari Watch it in a mirror and it will be just as if you are watching a left-handed person do it. You can use that tip for anything you see a right-handed person doing in online videos - and it works just as well for diagrams in books too. Regs... Megs

  • Do you have more tutorial videos? I love the way you do these things, they look more professional and would love to see more!

  • @grammissy If you have a look around on my website meganDOTcc (the DOT there means a "." but if I do that this message disappears) you'll find everything I've done so far. I do want to do more but am finding it difficult to get much time for my hobbies now that I'm studying part-time as well as working full-time. Regs... Megs

  • I watched this video to learn how to change colours. I'm new to crocheting. Thank you so much for your video. I'm going to blog my first work in a few days. pinklizzysews.blogspot Thank you!

  • I've been crocheting for a few years now and back when I was starting I happened upon your website. I've been using some of your crochet techniques all this time, such a turn without chaining, and it occurs to me I should thank you! Your tips have been invaluable and I use them nearly every time I crochet. THANK YOU! :D

  • @DayDreamerDawn You are very welcome - I'm chuffed you've found it useful! Regs... Megs

  • uh oh I think I did this wrong, I didn't include the tail of the new color when I was going back up the wrong side. Do you think it will come aloose? I merely did a turning chain and then crocheted over the tail as I went along with a new stitch. Can I fix this without taking all of my work aloose?

  • Hi Istillhavejoy,

As long as you left a tail you will be fine. If you want to make it extra-secure pull it free about halfway along where you crocheted over it, thread it onto a needle and weave it in another direction. If the tail seems a bit too short to do that push the needle through the fabric where you want to weave first, then thread the eye of the needle with the short bit of tail and pull it through. Regs... Megs

  • Wow....... That was simply superb!! Exactly what I was looking for......

    Post more crochet videos pls........

  • Thanks for the great instructions. I am trying to figure out how to carry the yarn over in a color change when I am working the "wrong" side. I can't seem to place my yarn right. Any tips?

  • Hi Demarskda,

I'm not sure where you're having trouble. Does it help to do the opposite of whatever I do on the right side? So if, for example, I tuck something over from back to front you do it instead from front to back? Or tuck it under instead of over? Have a little play around with that kind of idea and let me know if it helps, or if it at least helps clarify what exactly is going wrong on the wrong side. Regs... Megs

  • Thanks Megan, I think I figured it out. I just wasn't getting how to tuck the yarn around. I am on my way!

  • I watched this over and over for most of an hour and I still don't understand the chainless turning. When you say "insert your hook from behind," what exactly are you putting it into? As far as I can tell, I am doing double crochet correctly but there is no loop there at the end for me to put the hook into.

  • Never mind, I finally figured it out! I don't have enough memory in my brain to do that at the end of every row, but it looks so much better without the hole.

  • Thanks a lot!! I am learning how to crochet and it had been hard to learn how to change colors until I saw your video. You teach it in such a clear, simple and easy to follow pace that's impossible not to learn! You are a great teacher!

  • The gaps at the ends always drove me insane, the way you do it will change the look of my blankets for the better! I'm in the middle of a project now, but I will be using these tips for the next one. Thank you so very much!!

  • What a great tutorial love the neat way to change colors and making loose ends totally hidden. Thank you for great ideas.

  • Thanks Megan for the GREAT tips...they will really help me so much!

    Merry :)

  • thank you thank you thank you!!!!

This is some great information :)

  • What an entirely superb tutorial! Thank you especially for sharing your clever solution to those spindly 3-chain DCs and their resulting gaps at the beginning of rows. That changes everything--EVERYTHING, I tell ya!

(Oh, and being North American, I of course LOVE your "accent." ;*)

  • this is great, thanks!

  • Wonderful method. Just the advice I needed for the squares I want to try from "200 Crochet Blocks" by Jan Eaton. Thank you so much!

  • I'm new to crocheting and this video has saved me probably hours of trying to decipher how to do this from text/pictures! Thank you!

  • super

  • Thanks! Earlier I did not own these receptions.

  • wow! Thank you for the tips Megan. I didn't realise to wash the project before you cut off ends. Very helpful and great video.Thank you.

  • wow!

thanks for the tips. you are good!

  • Megan,

What a great technique for chaining on. Unfortunately, I can't seem to follow what you are doing. Do you have this technique somewhere in print?

  • Hi Danrita84,

Did I never answer this? How awful, I am sorry. I don't have the description in print but what you are effectively doing is working a double crochet (US single crochet) into the left side only of the previous one. Repeat. You count each of these as a 'chain' and keep going for as many as you need. You can make a 'chain' like this of any length you like. Regs... Megs

  • Megan, you are a genius! I've been crocheting for 40+ years, and never would have thought of your unique form of "weaving", which I always dread while I'm working on a project. Now I can finally do stress-free granny squares and multi-colored scarves and throws. Thanks again.

  • What a fantastic video....full of lots of wonderful tips! I've been crocheting for years and have always hated those beginning gaps that are made when turning...thank you SO MUCH for teaching an old dog a new trick!! :) Jody

  • woah! that part where you're making the chain, is it the editing that makes it look fast or do you really have lightning fingers? xD

i crochet as well, and i want to thank you for introducing me to these methods!

  • I was crocheting really slowly because I didn't know what we'd be using in the final cut. My husband sped that bit up. I've had people tell me I go really fast - but not so quick it turns into Superman Blur! ;-) Regs... Megs

  • Hi Megan,

I just LOVE this tips video. I am a veteran crocheter and teach myself but have never seen the tip on starting a new row (fattening up the chain). I bet I've watched this video 20 or more times. It is great. I sure wish you do some more. You've done a wonderful job on this one. I've been looking for months hoping you'd come up with a new tips video, but sadly, none come. :( God bless you and happy crocheting!!! Peg @ The Angel Loft

  • Hi Peg,

I'm so glad you love the video. I am intending to do more but at the moment the computer we use that can operate the editing software we have for our footage is not available. As soon as it is some more will be added. I think if you 'subscribe' you will get a notification when I next post a video so you don't have to keep checking back all the time to see. Regs... Megs

  • Absolutely fantastic. I have just got back into crochet, my young daughter wants a blanket for her dolls pram.

All I have done in the past was granny squares and now can't wait to do something different.

  • Fantastic tips! I always struggle with my ends, but I think you have given me the solution.

And may I compliment you on your beautiful finger nails!

  • Thanks so much! I am new to crocheting and I love these tips!!! Cyndi

  • Alright! Another crocheting secret for me to put in to good use. Thank you so much for sharing your talent and inventive creativity!

  • Fantastic! So many times I've seen this explained in books but it's hard to follow..... Now I get it! Thank you! xxx

  • I am new to crochet and just learnt how to do a granny square. I needed to know how to add more wool when last ball ran out. Thank you so much for your video, now I will be able to do this..excellent..x

  • That was great. I just made 2 beanies for the grandsons and had to sew in all the ends I love this. Is there a book I can get that has this type of advanced moves? I love it. Thanks for the video.

  • Hi Sierrastyles,

I haven't seen these in a book, I figured them out for myself... as I'm sure other crocheters have too, but haven't put it in a book. Mind you, I haven't read all the crochet books out there so maybe someone else knows of one? Regs... Megs

  • hi how are u???im destineeim 12 i learned to crochet few weeks ago.by a ladt, but my mom brought me book i taught my self to crochet at walmart its like 1.08 its very advanced have fun

  • Thanks for sharing this demo. am just getting back into crocheting and was looking for different tips.

  • Thanks for posting these great tips! On the new-row tip, are you putting the hook through both sides of the loop on the side stitch, or only the front loop? The video isn't clear on that, and I'm assuming you put it through both...

  • If you look carefully you will see that I just have one strand on my left thumb nail that I push the hook under and that after that there are only 2 strands on the hook before I pull through (the first one being the loop I started with) - and indeed that is correct. You only need to go under one strand. Regs... Megs

  • Brilliant! I've been struggling with a yarn needle after finishing my projects... Yours is much prettier.

  • Very helpful, thanks!

    from Chile

  • Just starting out, have made about 5 garments and had problems 'weaving' in ends because I was approaching it as you would when you knit. This helps a lot and I can't wait to try it. Thank you for your time and effort.

  • Very helpful, thanks!

  • Thanks so very much!!! Tidy crochet at long last!!

  • Omigosh! I utterly HATE gaps. You're right, they're downright ugly. Ugleeeeeeeee . . . lol

Fantastic video! Thanks for posting it.

  • Thanks a lot for this video. I am a 13 year old boy(strait) who enjoys working with yarn. Although crochet is not a very boyish hobby, i enjoy it quit a lot. i just dont get how to make a scarf.

  • I am just learning to crochet and this is done where even I can understant it .Bravo.

Lovely job.I wish I had you sittig beside me to teach me , I would be a whiz in no time. You are amazing.Thank you.

  • Great explanation, i enjoyed it and cant' wait to try the tips out on my next project, however at the end did you say to cut the tail off after you wash the item?

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Hi Mrsyooper25,

Yes, I cut the ends off after I've washed (and blocked if it's an item I block). That way the ends get 'extra-set-in' and the bit of tail that isn't trimmed during the wash stops any chance of pokies. If you're not going to wash it just trim them off, it will still work very well. Kind regards... Megan

  • Thanks for sharing this demo video

Really appreciate it as this was exactly what I have been looking for as just getting back into crocheting.

  • thank you for your tips! very helpful!!

  • These are wonderful tips! Thank you so much for sharing!

  • I have been doing crochet for years and never was satisfied with the ends bits and how I tried to hide them, and the joining chain, it always looked awful....oh, and the colour change....thanks so much for showing me these remarkable and very helpful steps to neater crocheting. from Paula

  • This is such a great tip. I always hated the hole that ended at the end of the row. This looks so much nicer. Thankyou for sharing Megan.

  • THANK-YOU for this tip - very helpful / I'll give it a try. I shall also pass it on to the crochet group I am a member of.

  • Thank you for this. I have been crocheting since the '60's and that is a new technique to end and turn a row.

It is also worth saying that your demonstration technique is really good.

    Thanks again!
