w00t the ORIGINAL scene where Vader just says "bring my shuttle" instead of the ridiculously long-winded "tell my shuttle to prepare for my arrival" that Lucas shoved in later...
I love this ending when R2 fixes the hyperdrive, It is a real turning point in the story. Falcon works again. Good guys escape. Luke's hand is fixed. Lando shows how deeply he wants to make back for betraying Solo. Rebels are gathered together with kick-ass vessels. Falcon is off to go and kick Jabba's Ass. And when the credits pop up, the only thing I have in mind is "now those guys are talking and I wanna see what's gonna happen next". Brilliant ending.
Admiral Piett was like the Wedge of the Imperials, he was the only admiral to survive, up until ROTJ, but he did survive Vader which is something to be impressed.
BRING MY SHUTTLE!!! that was waaaaaaaaay better than the alternate version "alert the star destroyer to prepare for my arrival" they should put it back in the blue ray version
@DraqNaq2011 I have a hunch for an in-movie reason: No one to really man them; Episode 4 had Luke and Han manning them while Chewie flew the ship and Leia alerting Han and Luke to what the enemy's doing. In 6, you could see there were men behind Lando during the space battle, so I wouldn't be surprised if the turrets were manned during that battle as well. Here though, there's only Leia, Chewie, and Lando, so no one to man the turrets (Lando and Chewie flying, Leia caring for Luke).
I wasn't gonna mention that. But since you did, I think it's one big boo-boo to fly close to a SSD which has upwards of 40 tractor beam emitters. (So says some wiki article. I'm not breaking out my SW encyclopedia to win any geek-cred online.) heheh
I don't get why they would delay. I think it's Piett who looks most worried after MF's departure cuz he issued the command too late.
The presupposition that the hyperdrive ain't working has to be it.
@Tsujanryo It's like the guys making the models move around didn't pay attention to the dialogue and didn't realize the Falcon was supposed to stay a certain distance away based on the words the characters were speaking. The dialogue doesn't support that Piett was late giving he command, but that the Falcon never quite came in range and thus Piett couldn't lock on. But the scene shows something different. It's weird.
I love that moment, right after the Falcon escapes, where Vader pauses, looks back, then walks away contemplatively. It's so subtle, but it's so perfect, the first hint of something human underneath the monster.
I just love how everyone on the Executor's bridge is scared to death when Falcon escapes. Vader knows how to make other people respect and fear you :P
Family Guy was right - Lando IS wearing Han's clothes in the scene where they've joined the fleet, talking to Luke on the Comm. Check out the episode which sends up this film - weird!
David Prowse doesn't get as much credit as he deserves for his nonverbal acting. This scene is masterful in the way he show Vader's inner conflict with simple double takes out the viewscreen/window, folding his arms behind his back, and just walking down a short flight of steps. Unappreciated acting by Prowse.
This Scene perfectly proves why the Special Edition is such a mixed back. For example the replacement of the bright light at 0:49 with a third bulkhead is a nice addition while this additional Scene of Vader arriving at the "Executor" is unnecessary and slows down the pace.
@derworfnet but it doesnt make sense how vader beat them to the destroyer first. The shuttle wasnt there and neither was a shuttle on the way.....or we didnt see it which makes us wonder. Scenes like And aleart my shuttle show that its already there.
@DarPower1 - It would be kind of a break in the action to show Vader getting to the ship first. And I don't think it would have been wise to make Lord Vader wait too long for a pick up!
@jjobie It's also chuck full of religious symbolism. When Luke fights Vader he's arrogant and tries to act like Jesus by standing on the platform. When he finds out Vader's his father, he realizes he has committed a prideful sin and falls like Lucifer (ironic for someone named Skywalker). He even hangs on an upside down cross and prays for another chance; the Millenium Falcon saves him. In the end everyone's trying to put the bad things aside and look towards a better future.
@jonbap426 she`s not touching the controls, plus she isn`t a pilot...but i stop this pointless argument. This is the best movie of the saga,i don`t care even if the Falcon flies by itself...
But. in all fairness, Lucas had almost nothing to do with the making of Empire. He barely co-wrote the script, and was exiled from the set by Irvin Kirschner, the director.
All Lucas really did was pay for the thing to be made. Which is why it's the best of entire series.
@jonbap426 thing is, lucas had nothing to do with the set scale or even the designs of the ships. He had ideas, but keep in mind that lucas was only the idea behind star wars. He didnt direct empire strikes back or even design the special effects. that was other much more knowledgable people who put it all together. Lucas jsut reaped the rewards of it. if you want to see lucas controlled movies, see episode 1,2,and 3. See how terrible they are? That is Lucas.
Wow! I thought I was the only nerd who actually missed that line! The new edition had someone else's voice doing it and it always annoyed the you-know-what out of me.
Sometimes I wonder if Lucas made some of the story up as he went along. There are certain elements that point out (I think) that this is the case. Some examples:
-Why were there romantic undertones between Luke and Leia?
-Why was Darth Vader Governor Tarkin's bitch in "A New Hope?" Wasn't Vader supposed to be the head honcho?
-"He betrayed and murdered your father." I'm not sure I buy the, "So what I told you was true...from a certain point of view" explanation.
I always thought the relationship between Vader and Tarkin was a bit like that between the head of the CIA and the country's top general: they're not officially in each other's hierarchy, and neither regards the other as a superior. It feels as though Vader is on loan to the military in SW as a kind of advisor.
wrong.. EP IV, V & VI were written basically all at the same time.. originally he wanted to do them all as one big movie, but broke it up into 3 parts
@KrushKrills George Lucas has said that he "made it up as he went along". I've heard him say so myself. Gary Kurtz has also verified that Lucas came up with plot ideas as he went along. You'd be surprised at how much was developed and changed as the films were being made.
@KrushKrills The first trilogy was envisioned as one film. For obvious reasons it was split into three. With the exception of the Asteroid field space chase (ESB) and a forest battle involving wookies (evoled into Ewoks in ROTJ) nothing was fleshed out for those films. After Star Wars (ANH) was successful that he had a setting to build on (and funds to work with). By then he was envisioning three trilogies (9 films).
One of my favorite scenes, I hate the new one, with the cut in clips of vader talk of alerting of his destroyer and him landing on it, it ruined this scene. The music and the flow of the scenes fits perfectly, the rescue of luke, pursuit of the falcon, vader asking luke to come with him, and finally the hyperdrive scene and escape of the falcon !
Interesting is that when Vader calls for Luke telephatically, Luke responds to it by saying father. It is as if he recognizes his father from the past. This could suggest that Luke had a previous encounter with his father spiritually, while not knowing he was Darth Vader.
I agree. The Rebel Fleet DEFINES the Star Wars movies and is one of John Williams' best. It combines all the efforts and themes of ESB into one and its wonderful.
What?! No, I'm pretty sure it was. I have the original version and the one from 1997. I'm positive it's in the '97 one. Unless the 2004 edition changed it. :S
@sodalover477 Actually, the new version is more or less what should have been released on the original album. But in those days, if they were to release as complete a version as Sony Classical did, it would have taken four discs.
I have the full score from the original movie and it says its called "Rescue from Cloud city/Hyperspace" - Its about 9 minutes long and starts from when Luke loses his hand until the falcon escapes
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The very first few seconds of this particular clip Vader does not say "Bring my shuttle", the correct line would be "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival."
@22centman36 dude, if only they made hier to the empire right after this film and kept it going. Lucas is so prequel happy right now that I dont knoww when we will see another descent star wars movie.
Just as JediHighGeneral, that is the best scene in the movie. Vader is so upset he won't even bother to kill Piett! And noone can keep their eyes of him! I love the small details, as how the last man he passes pretends to ignore him and then turn to look as he walks on. Brilliant!
At about 4:30 when the Falcon makes it's get-a-way, Piett is expecting to die and Vader....the way he turns and looks back and then just walks away.....with everyone just waiting for him to do something. Along with that low note music playing and the slow transition to the mighty Rebel Fleet.......
Yeah i think this scene also shows us the change in Vader, the encounter with luke and the fact that he now knows the truth has given Vader hope thus he spare Piett's life, and that guy at the start of ROTJ lol.
On the four disk "Star Wars Trilogy: The Original Soundtrack Anthology" set it's a mix of "Losing a Hand" where Luke's hanging upside down, "Hyperspace" where the Falcon makes its escape from the TIEs and Executor, and "Finale" where the heroes are last seen at the Rebel fleet. :)
If you like all the Star Wars music then I would strongly recommend the 4 disk Anthology. It's not in print anymore, but it does have practically every part of the soundtracks from the original movies JW ever wrote!
you should also get the 2 disc Special Edition score not only does it have some tracks not on the anthology but has stellar liner notes by michael mattessino
This is by far the best scene for me in the movie. After everything the group encountered all the downs and misfires the one thing that finally worked for them was the God Damn Hyperdrive finally working. I never saw this in the movie theater when it originally came out but I'm pretty sure every movie goer was chearing and clapping.
Yeah but this is easily the best of the 6 films. And even if the effects are decades old, the technology is still decades or probably centuries ahead of human technology.

thanks!
a lot, actually..

If you like all the Star Wars music then I would strongly recommend the 4 disk Anthology. It's not in print anymore, but it does have practically every part of the soundtracks from the original movies JW ever wrote!

uh...whree do i find this anthology?if tis not in print anymore,im assuming its not in stors but like online places or something like that?

Ebay is the only place I can think of, but there might be collectors stores out there who might have it.

you should also get the 2 disc Special Edition score not only does it have some tracks not on the anthology but has stellar liner notes by michael mattessino
