  • SRT-4 is a fast car right of a dealers lot but in my view mazda speed is a lot more car for the money. I drove both and neon is faster but when you look at interior, handling, and all other stuff SRT-4 is not even close to mazda. American auto industry is way behind japanese. And I wont even mention german auto industry. If you get an srt-4 and mazda speed park next to eachother and look at them you will understand what am i talking about. But hands down SRT-4 is a bit faster stock than MS3

Pvo was a joined effort by Mercedes/Mitsubishi.. engine is made i mexico.. and turbo was supposed 2 be used for a turbo potential eclipse.. that never made it so Daimler bout it..the SRT-4 engine is more Japanese enginered using the evo tech.. check it out

  • It lasts longer?! And you know that, how? The SRT-4 has been out for 6 years and they hold up very well.  The MS3 has been out for a year. So, yes, the MS3 has power rear windows, but they engine won't fall out of the SRT-4 like the MS3. BTW, did Mazda ever fix that engine falling out of the car thing?

"Wagons" tend to have a full-size rear storage area and a long window, like the old Ford County Squires, or a Volvo, BMW, M-B wagon, etc. SUVs are tall wagons. A smart fortwo is a hatch. A Mazda 6 5-door is a notch, since the rear glass opens; Acura Integras/RSXs are too, as were the last Mercury Cougars.

  • The Neon SRT-4 will put down 220-230 horepower at the wheels. The MS3 puts down generally 10 more HP, but it weights 300 lbs more than the SRT-4 Neon.

    The speed 3 and 6 have the SAME engine, but the AWD of the 6 will cause it to put down LESS power than the 3.

    Don't forget, you're driving a jap station wagon.

  • but a lot of those SRT-4s are modded and the others aren't. Read the fine print or the descriptions, please. SRTs have a LOT of mods out there for them, and cheap, which is great for them, but it's still a cheaply-built car, and still a Neon, and if the turbo blows, the engine will barely limp you to a repair shop. If I had $25K to spend on a new car, I'd get the Mazdaspeed3 hands down. Beats the Civic Si, cheaper than GTI, Calibers suck, and Cobalts are cheaply built too. HHRs are worse.

  • I was playing around with an SRT4 last night in my speed3. I pulled on him every time, 40-80, 70-100, it was pretty evenly matched overall. Dunno about his mods, had a loud bov and exhaust at least. I just have a CAI. Both nice cars!

  • My SRT-4 kept up with a 440 BHP (flywheel hp) Mustang GT in the 1/4 mile. His 12.71 to my 12.74. What does that mean, he pumpes out about 340-350 hp to the wheels. The wheel hp is what is important. The flywheel hp is just so that you can say WOW!!!

  • Simple answer, get a Speed6 instead! Some extra pounds but hey, drive in the winter or on slick surfaces and WOW! It'll outpull both the MS3 and STR-4, extra pounds and all. I've raced both and its TRUE. AWD take-off is unrivaled. Plus if you want to do some REAL racing (on a road with curves), again the MS3 and SRT-4 get left behind. An STi might beat me in the corners but I can actually take some friends out for a drive in comfort! Plus I still have $15,000 extra in my bank!

  • You must have picked on some poor drivers, because the SRT-4 and MS3 both run faster 1/4 mile times with a higher trap speed. The Speed6 will especially lose from a roll since the SRT-4 and MS3 both lighter and have about 20 more horsepower at the wheels. Nice try.

Stock vs Stock they are basically equal cars, try to get equal drivers in both and the outcome will probably be an equal race. One car might win due to beater/earlier shifting or alittle more traction. But equal. Why can't we all just get along.

However, there are some people that do not understand wheel horsepower and simply look at the 263 hp Mazda claims in their brochure and call it case closed. But like you and I have both said, it's a driver's race with a slight edge towards the SRT-4.

  • I would also like to add that the SRT-4s only seem to pull those MS3s on the quarter mile near the very end, when shifting into 4th gear. They jump just a bit, making that average of about .2 seconds difference between the two. Most likely the little extra torque the SRT has. SRT-4s only start to pull up at the higher speeds.

  • When it comes to corners its different however. Just a bit though. In that video it seemed the SRT got a jump on the first race and I seriously doubt the MS3 owner was powershifting. He probably either didn't know how or didn't want to risk ruining his transmission.

  • This was the first video of these two cars racing I had seen a while back. I didn't believe it one bit, and recently I obtained an SRT-4. I lined up with one of those MS3s and my thoughts were right. From a dig I barely pulled them, and from a roll its the same scenario. Full out driving the cars are almost dead even, with an SRT having a slight advantage in straight line performance.

  • I've never heard of a 300 hp factory option from Mazda, however, if true, I'd wouldn't trust that thing to get me to the local grocery store. If the engines fall out of the MS3's with stock power, I'd hate to see what that would do.

  • Buddy just got a mazda 3 speed, that car is one hell of a sleeper, Im SRT-4 stage 2, with AGP wga, 225 goodyear F1's and motor mounts, friend was bone stock mazda speed 3, I had friend of mine ( extra 190lbs ) in the car with me buddy with mazda speed had just him in it

  • and we raced from a dig and at 110mph I was only about 2.5 car lengths ahead of him, from a roll of 20mph was a bit more but damn those mazda speed 3s are hell of a fast car, but of course with all my mods and stuff im still not close to his sticker price :) But still very nice car. Took till 3rd gear then pulled 1.5 car lengths on him and at mid range 4th pulled another car length and as we climbed past 110 I was gaining slowly on him, then stoped at around 120

Except for letting my dog have some air back there when she is in the car the rear windows stay up all the time. So what do I care.   • did you ever think of altitude...??? I live up higher maybe, and ran a 13.964. a stock srt 4 at the same race track ran a 14.6 lol... then another one with intake and exhaust ran a 14.245, and my friends who is all stage 2 ran a 13.209

  • Altitude, ambient temp, RH, track condition, vehicle condition (boost leaks?) and the biggest factor, driver skill. I saw a MS3 2 weeks ago run a 15.0. So what? All things being equal, the SRT-4 is slightly quicker. It has a slightly higher power to weight ratio. Period. This has nothing to do with the MS3 being a very nice car.

  • you believe everything they put in a magazine??? all srt-4 reviews are almost 2 years old, I just had my friend come with me to a dyno. he drives a stock srt-4 it's hp was 224 WHP mine was 238 WHP and i have a stock speed 3. The torque settings for the speed 3 are much better. the quarter mile for an srt 4 is 14.5-14.9, the quarter mile for the speed 3 is 14-14.4. and might i add the srt-4 has .1 liters on the speed 3!

  • Another mag racer. Dude, you're way off on the 1/4 mile times. Even being a mag racer, you're still wrong. Check Motortrend's 13.8 during the Cobalt SS comparison. Average SRT-4 run is a 14.0.

    As far as HP, to have the same power to weight ratio, the MS3 MUST have at least 20 more HP than the SRT to be equal. On average, the MS3 falls short of matching the SRT-4 power to weight ratio.

    Here's a mag example for you.

    Automobile magazine.

    SRT-4 = 223 whp.

    Mazdaspeed 3 - 216 whp.

  • All the reviews I've read on the 04 SRT-4 have it at 0-60 anywhere from 5.3 -5.8 sec. Personally I've had mine 0-60 in 5.4 measured at the drag strip (not g-tech) with stock tires so a 5.3 isn't out of the question. The reviews for the M3S are anywhere from 5.8-5.9 same Mag reviewers for both cars. Just google it.

  • The M3S is nice but the SRT-4 is geared lower, weighs less and makes the same dynoed WHP as the speed. The SRT-4 doesn't have the nice interior or pretty Nav system but it is faster stock vs stock so if that's all you care about there you go.

  • I have driven both and would they they are very similar with the speed having more Hp but more weight also. The SRt is puchier in 1st and 2nd gear. The mazda is boost limited in the first 3 gears. It has more ECU nannies. I would say its a drivers race unless it reaches hwy speeds then the mazda would edge it out. MS3 seem to be dynoing 245-255whp on dynapacks.

  • The driver is me, all of you are right i do suck at driving, because i dont race every five min. I just enjoy having a sweet car i can buy stuff for and have fun with. Also this was before my motor mount broke, the bolt was lose (not known to me at the time) making it very difficult for me to shift under heavy acceleration. Also on the second race there was a car in front of me in my lane so i slowed down.

  • If this is legit then there you go. By the way I drive an SRT-4 and can personally say its a drivers race, so the bickering you people are doing is pointless. SRT weighs less, while the Mazda has an extra gear. Its a DRIVERS RACE. I've driven both and can say this from experience.

  • Well, I call BS on you MS3 people because both cars have the same whp stock, but the SRT-4 weighs 260 lbs less. Physics FTW! Anyways, in reality, both cars are very close; close enough that the manufacturing tolerances from car to car are enough to put either in front of the other.

    BHP is flywheel power. WHP is power at the wheels. MS3 rated @ flywheel, SRT-4 rated @ wheels. Power goes through the flywheel to get to the wheels. So your MS3 probably loses 20-30 hp through the drive train making it about 230-240hp at the wheels. If you do the same conversion for the SRT-4 in the opposite direction the SRT-4 is about 260 hp at the flywheel. Last I checked, but this might be above your kindagarden edjucation level, 260 = 260.

    Don't ge me wrong I am not hating on the MS3 or MS6. I like both cars. I think the MS6 looks great for a sedan turbo charged car. Kind of classy, pretty fast from the factory. A+ in my book. Same with the MS3, fast, handles well, Traction control. LOL, wish my car came with that stock, but I will have to settle for my aftermarket TCS. :)

  • Thats not true, i've seen (with my own eyes) both car been dynoed and the Mazda pulled out 10hp more and i think it was like 15 pounds of thorque more!!!!! So bs that jid!!

  • Oh, so the one you saw had 10 more hp? Do the math, jack. MS3 = 3180lbs / 240 hp = 13.25 lbs/hp. SRT-4 = 2900 lbs / 230 hp = 12.61 lbs/hp. That puts the power to weight ratio into the SRT-4's advantage by 5.1%. Cool wagon, but still just a tad short.

  • You need to learn a little thing about net, or wheel horsepower. Car manufacturers can claim all kinds of different HP amounts on paper (typically they list flywheel hp), but what counts is the power that actually gets to the ground. While the Mazda brochure lists 260 hp, a MS3 generally has between 230-240 hp at the wheels, or whp. The SRT-4 brochure lists 230 hp, but has between 220-230 whp. The SRT-4 weighs 300 lbs less, making it a drivers race between the two.

  • Okay ya know i figured i'd do some homework no this and i had to look no farther than the dudes page. He's got video of him pulling on an STI. Video was posted early Feb. The speed3 video was posted Nov24 so the car was brand new not broken in and new driver. I got my speed first one delivered withing 100miles Nov 4. SOOOO I have to say it's odd that you raced the MS3 stock and then three months later were walking and STI. I now think the video is bogus.

  • Look i'm not gonna flame the neon for being a neon or the MS3 driver for possibly being un skilled, but this is all wrong. I've played with SRT-4's before and they could'nt keep up. And these were guys with minor bolt on's. I'm sorry but I personally know that the MS3 is faster. They could'nt have all been stupid Neon owners...... Please, this is my real life experience so take it for everything it's worth.

  • those little neons are pretty sweet . but I have a ms3 and this thing is fast as hell . the second time its pretty apparent everytime the speeds boost hit he pulled easy then his brake lights come on.
