I'm pretty sure it's the king kong beat he's playing which is a little more complex than some of the stickings mentioned below. The only place I've seen this beat transcribed is in 'the code of funk' by David garibaldi although no doubt Mr Latham has it in his book too. It's a tough beat to get but worth it. Fantastic video. Really inspiring.
I saw a workshoop years ago here in lisbon of you Rick and was great!
i like your style playing drums and i study a lot exercises about that kind of style u have ,like playing a style of music but put only in one time a note and to not put at the same time 2 notes, like u to it rick in some rythm music styles !!
dudes a pimp. hey new drummers this groove is pretty damn easy when you break it down. read up about those rudiments and find what you can on tips to applying to the kit. if you sit down for a good hour and really work it out, you'll grab it. then its a matter of playing the shit out of it! basically what ricks been for what the past 30 years? maby more?
dude ive playd by ear all me loife itsstill good to read tho. i wish i cud read more fluently than i do now. the more info you have the more you know the better
playing by ear is always but when comes down to it and u r in a legit band it helps alot to be able to write ur music and know what the rest of the band is talking about when they need u to do something differently on the tempo notes whatever instead of just playing what u think sounds best
i have no idea what the puck you guys are talking about... i play by ear and i use anything from drumsticks on sets to paint buckets to my nuckles to wood
rick man you're awesome. you and my funky drum teacher have showed me the way. i plan on bringing the funk into some nice progressive death metal. mark my words!
I bet you're meager. Try and lay that groove down for a minute and a half - it takes discipline, control and skill; 3 things i'm sure you're meager at.
I find it funny that you say this is an intermediate skill level groove and that it "Doesn't really take much to accomplish". I checked out your videos and your your sense of time and feel is not even intermediate, it's terrible. Maby you should work on your own playing before you go around calling legends meager.
@eskimoposh lol meager....not a very used word, but sure why not. and you do have to admit, as solid as that was it was a little tiring........i was just expecting more of a solo.
@DrumsABlaze well then...maybe it should have only gone for 3 bars or so if it's just going to show a groove. Man i'm sick of being patronized on youtube. Every comment is some person alll "WAHHH YOUR WRONG YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING GO DIE!!!" youtube should just chill the fuck out and be friends.
@tjdrummer13 Not chewing you out or anything... Was just simply stating the obvious. Don't expect a solo when it says groove. And he can go as long as he wants. It's his video.
@tjdrummer13 I expect people to read the titles, which clearly indicates groove not solo, its like asking for chocolate milk at a lemonade stand, they are both drinks, but its the subtly in them that makes them hugely different. nothing personal just kinda funny.
I know this isn't an English grammar class, but isn't your usage of the adjective "meager" improper?
This video reminds me of "Face the Face" by Pete Townshend. SImon Phillips plays on that track and has commented on what a challenge it was to keep his playing uniform throughout.
Hahaha, you've got the balls to slam on a great player like Rick, and you yourself hit like a limp-wristed scene fucktard. Take some formal lessons before you sit down at a kit again.
Need a drumkit to practice this.I only have a pad atm.Not fair :-(

If you listen to the snare carefully there are loud accents, medium accents and quiet grace notes. Rick has a truly magnificent feel!

RLRRLRRLRLRRLRRL (in triplets), and I think all the doubles are sixteenths, if it's in 12/8. I think. (I couldn't really tell at that speed).

That is correct. Then the accents on the first R and then the 3rd R.

Not boasting, but there is nothing wrong with my meter. Your liberal tactics of attacking simply because you can't defend are weak bro.
This isn't about me or some lame video I made, this about this groove, laid down by this guy. It really is a simple groove.
nato137 3 years ago
@eskimoposh lol meager....not a very used word, but sure why not. and you do have to admit, as solid as that was it was a little tiring........i was just expecting more of a solo.
