Champions was actually developed for Marvel Online. After Marvel backed out, Cryptic was left holding the bag so they changed the name and modified it a bit. The engine itself was taken from City of Heroes which was the original game Cryptic developed before selling full rights to PlayNC. Champions has way too many limitations compared to City of Heroes which you can do almost anything. :)
Wait so this is gonna be a game where you see alot of people running around, and u can group, do quests lvl up, get better powers etc? Dont know if I 100% get the concept.
it's an MMO so i assume that that will all be in there.
there will be grouping for sure and you do missions to level up. your powers are upgradable so you get a few new powers but you more frequently get better versions of your existing powers.
i played today first time the beta and i must say this game is amazing, evry marvel or dc lover should get this game cauz its really amazing u can cr8 your own hero or just copie one existing hero like me, wolverine =P
mmmm not, you can make a supper hero that looks near sAMe as a DC supper hero like the silver serfer or the ice serfer dude but if you change the name thers nothing they can do
When you think about it, the superhero genre is a much better fit for MMOs than the fantasy genre is.
There's more room to create a unique-looking character, more room for every class to have spectacular-looking powers... just more flexibility in every way. People complain about limited character customization in a lot of MMOs but really-- how unique can you make an archer, or a paladin?
You'd think there'd be tons of superhero MMOs and just a few fantasy ones, rather than the opposite.
Companies make games based on what's popular to ensure sales though. Superhero popularity is only a recent phenomenon due to Hollywood adaptations. Before X-Men and Spiderman, superheroes were pretty much a sub-culture thing. As for CO, it's doing something really novel with its character creation. Letting players choose whatever powers and looks for their characters requires a LOT of options, integration, and balancing which is no easy feat. I think most past MMOs shy from that out of laziness.
Also there's the risk factor. Making a fantasy MMO is like making a wartime FPS. They're proven genres and ensure a level of profit even if the game sucks. Remember this is Cryptic's second comic MMO. With CoH, they didn't dare invest so much time and money into char creation in terms of gameplay (costumes were just aesthetics). I think this time around, they dared to go all out only because CoH proved to be such a success, plus now they have funds whereas before they had to start from scratch.
That's not particularly true. "Fantasy" is a very large-spanning label and in fact, superhero IS fantasy in a way. When people think fantasy they think elves and magic but it's really just a world that functions in a different reality. The problem is that no fantasy-style MMO has really tried anything different. This is vastly different than the typical setting fantasy MMOs have been chucking out.
You know, DCUO looks pretty good, but I can't help but to feel that your hero will always be second-best because of Superman and the gang. At least in CO, you'll be a part of the Champions as an equal.
LOL...DCUO? Really? DCUO has the worse animations I have seen in a MMO,next to Darkfall that is. Other big problem with DCUO is that every character has super strength, in CO the ability to pick up objects is related to your characters strength. DCUO is vaporware.
Umm...I personally think CO will be better, but thats a pretty bad argument . Why not talk about Cryptic's experience with Hero MMOs, or the robust character creation, or the nemesis system? I don't really know enough about DCUO to say anything against it, but I'm rooting for CO.
not everyone in dc universe has super strength. They only have it if you give your character it. There is a video of one superhero picking up a semi truck cause he has super strength and then another character tried to pick up and couldnt cuz he didnt have the strength.
lol all I ever see from DCUO from the dev videos are the devs picking up objects and whacking people with it. Maybe me, but I'll get tired of whacking people with objects I pick up after a while. Watch any video and that's all they wanna show off throughout the video.
It's like comparing Superman to Jesus, it's just not done, it makes no sense, they are both different. Ones like the First good Fantasy MMO, (and it shows, farming and high-level gear is all the range) and the other is like the Second best Super Hero MMO.
It didn't work out for Roper. Just got sacked a week ago. After the disaster with Hellgate, I suspect his career in the gaming industry is finished.

You can't "copie one existing hero" due to copyright, it's in the user agreement and will result in the character being removed if caught.

No it's not. Not even close. However, it should do pretty well. It's going to siphon off lots of players from City of Heroes/Villains.

You both can't compare Champions Online to WoW.
It's like comparing Superman to Jesus, it's just not done, it makes no sense, they are both different. Ones like the First good Fantasy MMO, (and it shows, farming and high-level gear is all the range) and the other is like the Second best Super Hero MMO.
