Goosebumps achieved...Tom Carnegie was magic. Though having said that, I've been going to this since 1997 (@ age 10) and the finish yesterday was easily the most emotionally searing on-track moment I've witnessed.
Nice. Can't wait til Sunday to see it on tv, with my media room sound cranked up. I have not been to the 500 in years. The start remains the greatest sound in all of sports. The only thing that ever came close was the introduction of Michael Jordan live at the United Center back in the day. Anyway. my favorite memory of the 500 live was in 1985 when Danny Sullivan spun out in a 360 and went on to win the race. WOW what a day that was!!!!

Too bad the race is sort of a relic from the past, no longer the monumental event it once was. Today it is much like the neighboring Kentucky Derby...still a big thing...but more based on tradition and not so much as a major event culturally. Still, it has its charms and character.
I thought I was the only one alive that got goosebumps only from this. I've been going to the indy 500 since 1986 and only missed 2 years. Started going at age 6. Indy is my superbowl, christmas, my birthday, my 4th of july... I've been up there on years that it was scorching hot, and I've been up there when we thought it would snow. UGH... It's december! Hurry up May! It's so nice to know that I'm not the only one so obsessed with Indy!!!

There is NOTHING like the start of the Indy 500. It is the most exciting moment in all of sports. I have been to over 30 of them and the hair raises on my arm just watching this footage! Thanks for sharing.
my grandfather, my father, and i used to watch the indy 500 every year until my grandpa passed my dad and i still do, in a few years my kid will join in the tradition. i live in ny and nothing sounds sweeter than back home again in indiana.
Me too!! Theres nothing like the first lap. Memorial day weekend is always amazing at the 500. I sit in the south vista between 1@2 but want to upgrade next year, any thoughts?
Went to my first 500 when I was 2 in 1977(cant remember it but can say I saw Foyts fourth) with my father and his entire family, good to see it is a tradition for so many others
It will be my 9th Indy 500! The best part is listening to the race on the radio, hearing two cars battle it out on the straight away and then seeing them fly out in front of you in turn #1.
This will be my 19th Indy 500 this year. We always get to the race early. Nothing matches the tradition and prestige of this race. Balloons, Jim Nabors, Borg Warner, fly-overs, Florence Henderson, The Purdue All-American Marching Band, Mary Hulman...
Vince...That is great! I started going to the 500 with my dad when I was 8 years old. I am now 38 years old and have three sons of my own and hope to see them writing comments like you have written. Enjoy the time with your Dad, life is short!! START YOUR ENGINES!!!!
My first 500 was 07 and man i have been HOOKED ON RACING!!!!!!!!!! I cant imagine missing one... The 500 may be the most thrilling race live EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow, how long until may?
No doubt, man...no doubt! What a Pantheon. Been going for almost 20 years with my Dad, split and all. I can't imagine not going to this race every year. Greatest Spectacle.
Indy is everything. I've to the 500 the last 4 years and i have say that nothing can match the history of the 500 or its meaning espucally in the time of crisis that we are in today. I guess it reminds us how great americia is.
Listening to Jim Nabors sing and reading your comment at the same time brought a tear to my eye. I couldn't have said it better myself...Indy truly is everything. I've been at Indy 9 times (including this race) and I'm moved every time I go. All the tradition that goes on at Indy and just the feeling of being there makes all the troubles in life seem small. What an amazing race...Can't wait for May 2009
I've lived in Indy my whole life (20 years) and have been raised to be a racing fan. I never got to sit on the front stretch for a 500 until this year and I never really understood what the 500 was all about until I saw all the pre-race festivities, and of course the race itself. There's an electricity in the air on the grid that can probably be matched only by the Super Bowl
I was at this one,,,,,there is nothing like hearing this "Back Home Again" it even brings a tear to a black guys eye,,,,,yes even nIndiana. I had a I attended 26 500's & qualifications straight thru 95 and the split it took all the Andretti/Green, Target/Ganassi to bring me back,,,,,,and it's been great
there is nothing better ina any sport no matter what anyone says than all the pre-reace events leading up to the Indianapolis 500.. i have been goin ever since i was 7 and have lived in IN my whole life.. this year will be my tenth year and i still get goosebumps everytime i hear jim neighbors sing "Back home again in Indiana"
Congrats on your 38th Indy...I will be celebrating my 17th and this will make a golden anniversery for my family at the race. 50 grand years of Indy 500s to tell around the fire.
i have been to every 500 since 1992 my dad every one since 1963. no matter how many times i see it the pre-race and the first few labs choke me up and give me goose bumps. when the cars form at the top to the front streach 11 rows of three it is the most beautful sight in the world. keep em coming.
I will get the first lap, maybe the last one too. I got a great still shot of Sam and Marco on the bricks at the checkers! dougatgarneracdotcom if you want a copy.
The 2006 was my first INDY 500,and i'll tell you all...I'll be back for the 2007!!I saw lots of Formula 1 races in Europe and thought i've seen it all,but what i saw and espacially heard last year,i'll never ever forget for the rest of my life!!I have been waiting one year long like a boy for his birthday and yeah,in a couple of weeks i'm coming back to your great country!!Eric,Amsterdam,Holland
I've been to 19 races over 28 years and this is a great primer for the race and a really good job of shooting by the fan (who has great seats by the way)! If you've never been, imagine this video x10 when you're there in person. I also love Tom Carnegie's call over the PA for the first lap, "...they way they're starting, it looks like a sprint to the finish." How prophetic by the great one on his final 500. LauraLinger has it right, "there ain't nothing like it."
This was my first indy 500. and i live in Ireland. It was a long way but so worth it. Shame Wheldon didnt win but the finish was something ill never ever forget.
i dont know. i really want to but my mate in chicago is very silent on the idea this year, he loved it but i think its a money issue! i dont drive so id have to bus it and camp or something. Ill be coming to the states at some point in the summer(to see a friend in OKie) and id give anything to go again. Ive watched it over here for ages and its so much better in 3D!
Thanks for the goosebumps. I had them on race day as well even though it was pushing 90 degrees in the sun in the southwest vista. 02ashfords, it is worth the trip across the pond to see if you ever get the opportunity.
Me too! It's one of the greatest moments of the year and this vid is a great capture. Love how Tom Carnegie says on lap 1, "they way they're starting, it looks like a sprint to the finish." How prophetic from the great one!
