  • Who are the personnel besides Zevon, Browne, and Lindley? I will say the drummer is Rick Marotta, who played on LR sessions as well as Browne's. You only get a glimpse of the organ player at 3:30. I have no idea who it might be. The bass player could be Leland Sklar though you cannot get a good view, and he seems to be reading a chart at 2:46 to 2:56?

  • Warren had a beautiful touch on the piano. Not only a great songwriter, but a very "Professional Musician" as well. A genius who was truly unappreciated for his vast talent, and intellect.

  • I heard of him in the 80's; got the song first from Linda R. album. Loved both versions. Someone stole my L.R. album though; wish I could get a CD of that one again.

  • whew glad i wont be seeing you again

  • One of the great melodies in rock, imho.

  • Better than Dylan.

  • warren + jackson...it is just magic....breatless...great you guys....

  • Hey! indaz1. Fuck Off Bitch! if you don't like Warren, then go turn on the spice girls you BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • still too funny , for all of warrens supposed greatness he will go down is history as" oh yeah the werewolf of london guy "

  • @indaz1 true, but it's a test of character...if you ask someone about Zevon and they rave about his other music. Then you know you've found someone worth seeing again.

  • why the hell this guy has only two grammys?

  • 5 people need to have the sheriff take it out on them.

  • Five village idiots' faces aren't all aglow....

  • Gotta love the irony putting his deadly enemy rock'n'roll on Mohammed's radio.

  • Definitely David Lindley on lap steel. No one but Mr Dave plays like that !

  • Never got the recognition ?? I dont get it? I always thought he was quite famous and got tons of radio airplay in his time. He is the sound of the 70s in my mind.

  • @ztoneish

yes he did GET -past tense - lots of air

but compared to others of that era, not so much now

and as I listen to his stuff now, it holds up so well and I see his genius

  • @ztoneish Where I lived in the US midwest he got lots of airplay for Werewolves and Lawyers, Guns, and Money. That's about it. I listened to FM radio, which was rather rare back then, and to the underground, 'cool' stations. He didn't get any airtime except for those 2 songs. Covers by other artists of his songs were played.

  • This was the first version of this song I ever heard. After this one, the album version was a bit of a letdown, really.

  • The Best! Supports the IRA and Mercs! Quite the man and singer!

  • A great singer-songwriter. Warren left the world a poorer place indeed.

  • Isn't that Jackson Brown and David Lindley of steel guitar?

  • i know this is the OGWT but anyone know what year this was?

  • @delly659 12/7/1976

  • @delly659 What killed me was in Warrens VH1 2004 makin' The Wind he and Jorge Calderon had probs with "Disorder in the House" Jorge goes tomorrow when we're fresh. Zevon goes, "Jorge I'm DYING. Aint NO "fresh in no morning!""

Always the sardonic jab, masterful and gracefullybrutal..

Had the pleasure of seein' Zevon and Jackson around 1979 at the old Mountain Aire show @ Frogtown Airport CA. "Werewolves" was hot then. And Les Dudek kicked it all off with CENTRAL PARK.. Ain't nothin better !!

  • i know this is the OGWT but anyone know what year this was?

  • ROCK IN PEACE WARREN...A TRULY GREAT ARTIST. ..GREATLY MISSED

  • cancer sucks he was such a genius

i so loved him before anyone ever herd of him

  • cancer sucks he was such a genius

  • I truly love this artist he is an awesome songwriter his voice is none like anyone elses and =)

  • A sad loss to all

  • I am honored I saw Warren 5 times, and have his entire discography. His music carried me through some dark, dark times. Thank you Warren Zevon, I will never forget...spread the word....Jordan Zevon-Great job on "Enjoy Every Sandwich"

  • he is a legend

  • What an enjoyable resource, this " you tube", is! I was jones'in to hear this tune, and I was then treated to this fine version!!

  • Thanks for the honesty of your comment Coondog. I am an ex-drunk myself. I am sure I was up there with Warren in alcohol consumption. I once drank a fifth of Seagrams right out of the bottle in about 15 minutes. I had numerous black outs, fights, lost girlfriends, and lost friends. I found AA in 1984, and have been straight ever since. I can surely identifly with Warren's alocohol addiction. I even had DT's at 27. I should be dead. God bless you Warren. You were the best. Tragically human.

  • warren zevon will always be the man, nice post jiggs

  • I love this song. And I love Warren Zevon, a fantastic singer, pianist and songwriter who never got his just desserts. Zevon's unique sense of humor, understated wisdom and courage in the face of a deadly illness truly inspired so many. Thankfully, his friends (especially Jackson Browne) recognized his uncanny ability to compose fantastic music, and oft times incorporated it into their concerts. David Letterman was a huge fan and made certain his music was heard. FUCK CANCER!

  • miss that marvellous voice, his heart was pretty good too

  • thank you for posting this! and, in my opinion, screw the grammys... what the hell do they know that we don't? Alabama won grammys. Zevon lives forever.

  • @Mendon87 Actually it's the Rock n Roll Hall of fame that needs to put WZ were he so rightfully belongs.

  • @Jiggs46 right on!

  • @Mendon87 With all due respect, I don't believe Warren ever gave a shit about the Hall Of Fame.

I believe the same thing about Todd Rundgren.

Sure it has to be one of the greatest feelings in the world to have your peers there, applauding you after your acceptance speech, and jamming with many of them, but don't you think all the decades of feeding off the energy of very satisfied audiences is what it may be all about for most?

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @Mendon87 Amen ! Zevon should have his own room the the hall of fame.

  • @indaz1 You are correct about your IQ.

  • @Jiggs46 i was joking but i see it went over your head wise up sucker

  • @indaz1 too bad about your iq

  • @jgmdjsmm oh and with your great IQ you waste it by putting comments on youtube lmao wat a loser

  • @indaz1 I certainly respect your honesty, but if you really think Warren's music sucks, lol, was it really necessary to come hear and subject yourself to the sound of his voice and his music, or did you turn the sound down, lol? Or is it as you wrote, you just hate the music and like the lyrics, lol. Sorry, I'm not rying to put a strain on your brain, but I've never seen a comment hidden for too many negative votes,,,LOL!!!

    Thanks for the laughsLOL!!!

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @rockinroller7 man you warren fans need to get a life i said this 7 months and as far a lol ing whose the bigger joke me or you who took time to use your big brain power to try to insult me lmao what a joke why not use that brain and write you own songs,,,,,,, loser

  • @indaz1 Get a life? LOL! Man you need to get some songs and loosen up. It doesn't require a huge brain to deal with someone who can't tell when someone is joking with them.

You have your age listed as 60, so why is it that you write like a ten year old, using words like "Loser?"

You don't need to answer that one, I know why.

    Sorry I disturbed your sleep.

You can have the last word. Warren would have wanted it that way. Giving you the chance to be the "Bigger joke."LOL!!!

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @Mendon87

    What you sayin bout 'bama?

  • @Mendon87

    what you sayin bout 'bama?

  • @Mendon87 got that right

  • WHO'SE RADIO??? LMFAO

  • Warren in terms of voice, lyrics and songwriting ability should have been as big as Bruce...Warren could sing the phonebook in Russian I don't care....the SOUND of his voice will haunt me forever

  • Brilliant song. Warren could weave a beautiful ballad or a tongue-in-cheek ,humoresque ditty. He was truly a great artist., my favorite. Even over Neil Young or Don Henley, and they are great song writers. But Warren's classical background put him above the rest. RIP buddy!!

  • i got in warren late. and i was pissed at myself. How could i have not known about him?? Great great artist.

  • @bradystjames Better late than never ;-)

  • get a cd called quiet normal life,my 12 yo g-son loves him,he says he is sick and i told we are also.he just nods

  • @bradystjames Me too.

  • Thanks............

  • Beautiful version. I wish there'd been at least on shot of Lindley playing other than his head in the distance. He adds a lot to this version and is visually lost.

  • this is so beautifully done. so pure and simple. today's performers should take note.....talent at this level is so incredibly rare. one, the poet and the other raw everyday living. love them both and listen to them always.

    thanks for the great post.

  • @Clancee7 Glad you enjoyed :)

  • the archetypal mad scientist, egomanical rockstar himself

  • Thanks for the posting. Unbelievable that WZ won only TWO Grammys over his long career. He was a genious of melody and, oh man, what lyrics! Truly mourned and missed.

  • @cheaptwangers You're welcome.and I could not agree more.

  • @cheaptwangers You're absolutely right.

Warren was the singer-songwriter's most gifted of his generation and is a scandal that has been rewarded only by two grammys.

I never get tired of listening to his songs and I miss him greatly

    Greetings from France

    Alain

  • Masterful performance, and Lindley on that guitar - awesome

  • Could've replaced the last lamp with "amp" and even gotten more out of it. That's the thing with Zevon. The lyrical possibilities just seem to be endless.

  • Thanks for posting lyrics...

  • @bimbo9 You're welcome

  • NIce posts. W.Z. has and always will be a part of my persona, I'm a drunk, junkie womanizing ex-smoker (Now In Recovery), except for the ladies. Why I live and Warren dies is a roll of the dice. I miss him. I'm a better man for listening, watching and learning from the author of Mohammed's Radio.

  • The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is incomplete with out Warren Zevon.

  • Jiggs, thanks for putting this up!! Oh heavens how I miss seeing him perform in Chicago. Life has been so much less since he died. I started going to see him perform in the 1970's. His irony and wit cannot be matched by other songwriters.

  • @LakesideArt I feel the same..TY

  • One of the greatest fucking songs of all time! Fucking Warreeeeeennnnnn!!!! Should give an MP3 of this to every soldier in Iraq & Afghan. Maybe they'd lay down their weapons & go the fuck home.

    _______

"Everybody's desperate trying to make ends meet,

Work all day, still can't pay the price of gasoline and meat

Alas, their lives are incomplete ...

Don't it make you want to rock'n'rooooollll all night long!!!"

    __________

Heart and soul, baby. Heart and fucking SOUL!

  • Great Post of a Wonderful singer..Thank you!..:-)

  • Wow !!! This is an amzing performance of an amazing song... by an amazing artist. Thn3X for this. :)

  • I love this so much.

  • Timeless perfection. Thanks for posting.

  • how much better can it get ? ... thx Warren

  • What a group onstage--the famous sensitive singer/songwriter, the not-yet famous, Hunter Thompsonesque mad singer songwriter, and the genius on all things stringed David Lindley (who unfortunately we can barely see). At one point Browne is just watching Zevon with a knowing, admiring grin. A great piece of music history.

  • Warren will never be forgotten!!! Zevon was a great musician and songwriter!!!

  • all hail zevon

  • Rest in peace Warren.

  • warren zevon rocks.

  • I love the smell of Zevon in the morning

  • Warren Zevon not in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame but Madonna is. Whats up with that ?

  • I think the word you're looking for is bullshit.

  • warren was one of a kind - took a little magic out of the world when he left us - warren if you can hear this thanks man

  • poor, poor

  • This man had talent by the ton and his passing is a sad loss to music. Artistry, lyrical perfection and musical genius can't even begin to describe Warren Zevon. I was lucky to see him perform in Dublin in May 2000. What a show. Gone but not forgotten!

  • Lovely.

  • This entire album is gorgeous. I have it on (scratched!) vinyl and keep hoping I can get another copy, but it's a difficult buy.

  • I saw a vinyl copy at a used book store last year. I am still kicking myself for not buying it. You can get it on CD if that works for you.

  • A wonderful, wonderful version of the song by its creator! Thank you for the Posting.

If you don't know it, may I suggest that you try also the YT Clip of this song by the Arizona Smoke Revue? A minor galaxy of talent on stage there, much of it still aglow.

    [Tyneside, England.]

  • God bless you Warren!

  • Otherworldly! One of my favorites - it's such a shame that Warren never got the recognition he so truly deserved. He was a genius.

  • Amen Brother.

  • @jgerani nowadays massive recognition by the media becomes inextricably prostituting, Warren would have not wanted that at all

  • goddamn, the 70s had great music. specifically this, of course. but i mean the instrumentation, the musicianship....it just doesnt get featured anymore. now they put the band back in the dark if they even have a live band.

  • what year was this recorded??

  • It says December 1976. Great stuff. He should have had Browne sing on the recording, and Lindley is spot-on, as always.

  • This clip is a classic - Jackson Browne is playing accoustic.

Its a bit wonderful - he's come all the way to BBC centre London to support his friend.

  • Comment removed

  • It's amazing how so simple a tune can strike so many chords within your soul. WZ was truly one of the greats.

  • Every once in awhile, a genius comes along. This was one of those times.

  • I had an awesome dream one night that was inspired by this song. Probably my best dream in 10 years.

  • Warren was a genius. Utterly insanley mad in the head. But a genius singer, songwriter and inspiration for us all- Life's hard without you round anymore buddy..

  • judging by his lyrics, he's a lot saner than many artists/'artists' out there

  • their both so young here

  • i love this guy.

  • i love listening to him when im drunk

  • Oh how I wish we could just sing our way to peace

  • I wish they had a camera angle so you could see David Lindley. I can see why Jackson produced Warren, what a great combination of styles.

  • Wow, just came across this video of the wonderful Warren... Thanks... I miss him, too, but he lives on in the music we love.

  • Wind to thy wings Warren. The world is a smaller and darker place without you.

  • The best way to describe WZ is when he's not in the room you notice he's gone

  • Fantastic. Personally one of my favorite songs ever. Imagine having a band including Jackson Browne singing backup and David Lindly on Lap steel. Mm, I miss this kind of music making.

  • Thank you for posting this...

  • Always the Genius the visonary

  • Thanks!!!

  • Jiggs, thanks so much for putting this brilliant vid up. WZ at, or near, his early peak in voice, creativity and stage presence. What an American original. Doesn't it just point out the absurdity of the Grammy's that Zevon wins his first one--only after his death, despite a 30-year career? Eff 'em!

Matter of fact, Warren might well have considered it a badge of honor NOT to be in the insipid R&R HOF, thanks to its irrelevance to acknowledging real talent and musical brilliance. RIP, Warren

  • Well said, I'm glad you enjoyed. He was one of the few people I went to see every year and I miss him.

  • Elvis didn't win a grammy until he released a Gospel album.

Also, the year "Tommy" and "Let It Bleed" was released, the #1 song in the country was "Sugar sugar" by the Archies. Some things never change.

  • Zevon kicks ass. So good yet so unknown.

  • he's not so unknown...he's widely regarded

as having been one of the best songwriters...

  • Yeah, but if you ask a random person who Warren Zevon is, 90% of the time they'll have no clue whatsoever, and another 5% of the time they'll say "He's that one-hit-wonder who did Werewolves of London, right?"

Then if you mention the names of half his songs, everybody always thinks they were written by Linda Ronstadt.

He's somehow still not widely known among the general populace.

  • Well, that's true. But the concept of "fame" is a very broad and vague one. You can be famous in the right circles or the wrong circles. Nikola Telsa is really famous and uber-respected in the right circles. In the wrong circles, everyone knows Edison and no one knows Telsa. Being famous in the general, mainstream populace doesn't mean much. Many more people in the general populace know who Britney Spears (sorry, it's the most obvious example)is than Zevon. But how much does that actually mean?

  • And I guess my point is that the right circles are still pretty huge circles (large radii!).

  • I agree, it really wouldn't affect much if he were generally known.

Still, sometimes it's aggravating being forced to sit with a roomful of people playing some churned-out pop music crap. So I'll try putting on a song by Zevon, or even something more mainstream like Bob Dylan or what not; of course infallibly, no one in the group knows what the hell I'm playing so they scream at me to put *NSYNC back on before they shit themselves.

I still have to find one of these larger radii apparently. =P

  • Warren Zevon is/was the best kept secret in rock music. Not only are the lyrics "genius", but his vocals were perfect to complement the real feeling in the words.

  • without a doubt

  • absolutely he has a brilliant voice

  • He is eternal!

  • Gorgeous. But I cannot stop myself from thinking that Jackson Browne allegedly beat his girlfriend up. Warren just beat himself up. Still, who I am to judge.

  • Warren beat his wife up a few times too, tscharre. Troubled genius.

  • beautiful... warren zevon, jackson browne and david lindley on the slide guitar. this is like a beautiful dream. great musicians and great souls.

  • Oh gosh, thank you so much for sharing this. This is a total gem.

  • Absolutely brilliant clip.

What a time. Thanks a ton for finding and posting this, Jiggs.

  • Love, love, love, love

  • there will Never be another Warren...not ever!!!!

  • That is so true

  • Warren was an unreplacable one-of-a-kind, a top notch writer, lyricist, and performer. One of rock's greatest.

  • R.I.P Warren Zevon One of if not the best song writers ever.

  • Loved this song since I first heard it in the late 70's. What a musician!

  • now this is real music

  • Thank you for posting. It's always a pleasure to see and hear real talent... and to echo the sentiments of other posted comments, when the talent is real and not enhanced or boosted artificially it makes it even more awesome. Rock on Warren, you are truly kept forever in my heart.

  • NO gimmicks, screamming vocals or flashing lights, just real talent..pure perfection. Thanks for posting Jiggs

  • You're welcome....Warren never gets stale to me.

  • BRILLIANT SONG

  • This should be required watching for anyone considering music as a career so they can see how it's really done. No safety net, no lip-syncing.

From incredible song writing to phenomenal musicianship, this 4 minutes has more musical depth then every season of American Idol put together. Sadly this is lost on 99% of the population.

Don't you wonder what Simon would say to Warren Zevon regarding this performance?

  • Well said,I miss seeing Warren. I was lucky to see Warren alot thru the years, Always a great time.

  • Simon would something like, "Your voice is okay for novelty tunes, but it's not star material." Simon's taste in singers is very narrow, mainstream and conservative--one of the reasons why the show is so dull and the finalists so uninteresting.

  • hah. no. Who gives a fuck what Simon thinks? Warren is brilliant.

  • I'ts a song from Warren and Jackson, but when you listen carefully you only hear David Lindley playing on his Lap Steel guitar.

I'ts a shame that they put him out of sight near the piano.

    A great song

  • this is truely a timeless classic. I'd love to be able to afford both gaoline and meat.

  • ah! god thats great

  • Rest in Peace Warren. You left us much too soon.

  • Thank you R.E.M. for bringing this gem to a wider public!! (via their "Jukebox Cd" of the new Q-Magazine..)

  • Brilliant! I know there are other performances from this same OGWT segment. Someone please post them if they got 'em. Love Lindley on the pedal steel...

  • David "Lintfree" is GOD!!!!

  • A piece of history folks. I know there's more of this particular performance from OGWT somewhere... Brilliant. Love Lindley on the pedal steel...

  • it dont get better then warren love that song

  • what about empty handed heart, with linda ronstadt?

  • My favorite Warren Zevon song. I ran across this clip by accident; it made my day!

  • Nice Song..

  • The LYRICS are FANTASTIC pin head...

  • Not a fan of some of the lyrics, but, you can't deny the pure genius of Warren. Rest in peace.
