This song always reminds me of the last time I saw my younger brother Daniel alive for the last time about seven years ago. As I left I felt like something was wrong and we'd never be together again. March 4th 2005 my brother was in a fatal car accident. He along with several of his friends were killed on impact. For along time this song made me weep like a baby. Now I smile when I hear it. Beautiful song.

My older brother is Daniel. This song always makes me think of him. It's very emotional. If I heard this song when he was away at college or when he lived out of state, it would make me cry. It still makes me melancholy. Sir Elton is a genius and has three generations of fans in my family. He's performed so many wonderful tunes. My wife's favorites are "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Candle in the Wind" are his best, but I think this is the one.

Daniel is NOT his brother. Daniel was a young boy who had cancer, a little boy who dreamed of meeting Sir Elton John and when Sir Elton met him, he was so wrapped up in the fact that this boy was to die soon. Our Great Singer then wrote this song to commemorate the life of this young child.

Actually the song, like all of Eltons songs, was written by Bernie Taupin (Elton only writes the music not the lyrics) and is inspired by a Vietnam vet who runs away to Spain to get away from everything at home, and is told from the perspective of his brother.

Bernie stated this on the Two Rooms tribute album, and said that its been one of the most misenterpreted songs ever, as your story is one of those false stories regarding the song that proves this point.

@huggyhare That was not the point of my comment. Someone suggested that Elton wrote the song about a young boy who died of cancer, when its been a well known fact for years that Bernie writes the lyrics and Elton the tune (and lets face it, without lyrics its just a tune not a song).

The main point was that Bernie has stated what the songs inspiration was, and it wasnt about a boy dying of cancer, it was about a guy returning from war then escaping to Spain to get away from his nightmares etc.

I have been Elton John fan since 1970. Heard 'Your Song' on the am radio for the first time within first week of release. I knew then this guy is just getting started. That collaboration of EJ and bernie taupin, extremely rare. They both are true artists and must have known from the start they were on to something. Daniel enjoys traveling on the plane. Daniel is a brother. Daniel has severe cerebral palsy. People with CP always feel some type of pain. Sometime he is scared by others. He sees more then I, because he can't talk. Daniel is making history now, and someday, Daniel will be the star in the sky.
