Great singing. I disagree with the comments about makeup/costume. I find this staging much more in the spirit of baroque (elaborate). And the makeup is meant to be seen hundreds of feet away. This is a breath of fresh air compared to modern stagings, sung upside-down on a trapeze with sequined dildos!

I am a huge Caballe fan but... really? what's going on with this costume and make up? I also agree with the comments that state that this was not a role for la diva. Stlll, Brava!!!
@TheAleph74 I agree. Her costume and makeup look like something out of a horror movie or nightmareWere they going for the Adams Family look or what??Ths has to be one of the worst costume and make up mishaps in opera history. She should not have went out on stage looking like that, she should have insisted they do better.
it is interesting to note that caballe was in her 50s here. her voice is still fully intact unlike many singers today are over the hill at 40 because of bad technique. i always preferred a fuller voice for cleopatra. beautiful
Oh my God ! Why Monserrat are you making me crying ??? It is just a dream. You have taken us to heaven during years and years ! We never will found another voice with such a purity ! The world is just sad without your voice
Maybe she hated the production. What was the idea behind it? Kabuki theatre? It's hard for a great artist to give of her best when she's made to feel uncomfortable. Anyway, I don't think this was her role at this stage of her career. Sending a cannon to swat a fly!
I love her dearly, but she could be utterly indifferent at times. Here, blame it on the tempo, which causes the music to come apart. Find the version from a Carnegie recital !!

I imagine that if Giulio Cesare had seen Cleopatra looking like that, he would have fled Egypt in terror. Caballe had a glorious voice, but you had to keep your eyes shut.
i love the sound but i cant stand that tempo. also i could not believe what i heard in the fast part... so many notes out of tune. its not what i expected from THE caballe :(
she sounds fine, in control, though the start was not very good... but she conveys the emotion needed in the long slow phrases. I was waiting for more drama in the middle fast section, but well... the second part of the aria is beautiful, the ornaments are not the usual but they are moving; in this part she beats Kozená by far -its the other version I know...
many notes are a little to more flat, but she will NEVER push, so she has lasted. it's a beautiful sound, even with the flatness. no one sings high and beautiful like her.
well first off all its not her best cliopatra act, but for an opera singer she is not to yong. about her hair and make up, they are simpely perfect for that aria, in witch she is mourning the death of her love. nobody can imagine that a quen like cliopatra will alow herself to fall thet hard and thus the interpretation is simpely prfect.
I didn't like her "Da tempeste..." but this aria is well sung, especially the da capo in which Caballe glories in her ethereal piani and even displays one or two great trills that would make Sutherland proud. Although I prefer Sills for this aria and opera, I must say Caballe turns in a deeply felt and beautiful performance.
At this point in the opera, Cleopatra is held a prisoner, so really she should look drab as it is shown here. But the wig is a little too freightening, even for that situation. Still nothing really matters as her singing is so glorious. I'm a huge baroque opera fan with a strong preference for the "authentic" more informend performance, but it all seems all so trivial next to such magnificent and sincere singing.
Absolutely beautiful singing, but she looks like a member of KISS dressed as a swamp creature...not like the beautiful (future) queen of Egypt!

Did she wear the same costume here as when she sang Liu in Turandot?

Her recapitulation is serene. No wonder she dominated the operatic scene for so long.
