  • This touches my heart except for the fact the kid left he's father behind

  • Am I the only one who sees the incongruence in the story of this well mannerd and decent young man who left his blind father behind?

    Or do I have cynicism?

  • I really cannot believe that all of you people keep screaming about the Holocaust in a car ad.

  • Reading these comments, it's funny how people CRY over a commercial ad but then don't give TWO SHITS about the holocaust. Glad we have our priorities straight.........

  • Comment removed

  • People don't care about holocaust anymore because constant hawking from people like you make them numb.

  • Rest assured that you, funnydognv, do NOT speak for most educated people, or indeed for anyone with any imagination.

  • Very touching. I can't believe I cried over a VW commercial :(

  • nice add :)

  • Beautiful commerial, like their vehicles.

  • Why ALWAYS relate today's thing with holocaust? Does it mean holocaust should be repaid with another holocaust?

  • south african add.

  • Great car!

    nice commercial..

  • nice

  • Ahhh...that was awesome:D

  • ...except Volkswagen was Hitler's car.

  • Do you think vulgarity strengthens your point?

  • Now you profess to know what I'm thinking. And you've known me for how long? Must be a clairvoyant in addition to being a scholar. lol

  • I understand what you're saying, but it's kind of outdated. My ancestors owned slaves, but does that mean that I think of people as property? Volkswagen is no longer run by supporters of Hitler. Germany is not the same country it was seventy years ago. While I agree that we shouldn't ever forget the horrible things that happened under Hitler, I think a certain amount of forgiveness is in order.

  • We Poles have long memories.

  • Very good point of view! ;-) *Thumbs up*

  • What an insensitive thing to say. This is modern history, the effects of which Europe is still feeling today. You, on the other hand, are so thoroughly detacthed from holocaust (not unlike the USA at that time) you haven't a clue; to you it's just another factoid in your high-school history book, at best. How do I know? Because you wouldn't have said such a thing. "Get over it??" You make such a crass remark to the wrong person and you're liable to get decked. You are way out of line.

  • I agree. Engineering, technology , science or products are not "evil". People are.

  • Kindly don't put words in my mouth. Volkswagen was most certainly founded by Adolf Hilter and Ferdinand Porsche in 1938, the year before Germany invaded Poland. Independently, Adolf Hitler was, in large part, responsible for the Holocaust. I strongly suggest you do even the most preliminary research before you go make a complete arse of yourself and offend those affected by it.

  • Yes, it was founded by Adolf Hitler, so what? That was a very long time ago, it is backward and a complete anachronism to blame Volkswagon, evcen the company it was back then, for being responsible for the holocaust. And so you know, my Grandfather died in a labour camp, which is why when I read your comment I was personally offended, as people like you do nothing to further the human race, you live in a backward state of hatred. You think i'm the one making an arse out of myself? That's you.

  • Honouring victims, helping to assure that history doesn't repeat itself does nothing to further the human race? Who lacks perspective? We obviously were brought up with very different values. And some of us are critical thinkers; others, blind followers.

I don't hate the Germans at all. But I don't forget. For that I will not apologise.

If you consider 1938 "a very long time ago" I doubt your Grandfather could have been in a camp. It just doesn't add up time-wise. But if so I apologise humbly.

  • Right, so not buying a VW will assure the holocaust doesn't happen again? What a laod of nonsense, and don't patronise me with your family-values crap you self-righteous turd. And although I don't consider something that happened 31 years before my birth that long ago, I meant culturally that the world was a totally different place, and particularly Germany was.

It is only when we forget historical mistakes, "we are doomed to repeat them". And I am certainly not suggesting we forget them.

  • Slight oversimplification.

"Not suggesting we forget them?" When you joined the thread you were suggesting we not even acknowledge them: "VW wasn't Hitler's company."

Just keeping things in perspective, that's all.

  • I am not denying that we forget VW was Hitler's company! I just think it pathetic holding them accountable for the holocaust!

  • And you clearly don't know the meaning of "perspective". You seem to have it confused with "blind idiocy".

  • "VW wasn't Hitler's company." is about as blindly idiotic as it gets.

  • (He wanted Lebensraum "for the people" too.)

  • Oh please, Hitler was a deeply evil man. You think I don't know that?

  • Do you actually know who "made/sponsored weaponry/ammo for the Holocaust", or are you just conveniently guessing who didn't? "Innocent" indeed. Hitler didn't carry out the Holocaust alone, you know.

There was 1 solitary attack on the US during WWII, by the Japanese. For this reason, there are Americans who will never buy Japanese. Although I do not share this view, I understand and respect it. Too bad you can't respect those recalling 6 years of genocide and unspeakable atrocities. Enough said.

  • Besides that, this is a car advertisement not some political scheme by the Germans to fund for another Holocaust. People watch this video to enjoy the cars. Not hear you talk about years of suffering created by the founder. I don't even think anyone will know that the founder of Volkswagen was Hitler until you brought it up. This video is about cars Mr History-Know-It-All. You want to talk about history, go somewhere else. This is not your place to be.

  • An inconvenient truth indeed. Just keeping things in perspective, Mr Blissful-Ignorance-By-Choice. Must be nice to not be lumbered by reason.

  • That would be Miss to you. And I don't ignore it by choice. Whatever is in the past, will remain there. Move forward. I don't linger there like you. I prefer to move on.

  • great...inconvenient truth...omg

Do you know how many companies and corporations were involved in crime and even murder? sure, hitler is the worst and so on.

I just give you some names...

Chiquita also known as United Fruit

    Coca Cola Company

    ...

I'm not speaking about what is better or what is worse, but what counts here is the present, not a horrible past.

  • Of course I do, some. And I don't deal with them. IBM, Ford, to name a couple more. Were accountability immaterial, we would not have justice systems. Such as Nuremberg. Or the Hague.

    Like, ohmygod.

On the other hand, it must be nice to be unencumbered by principles.

  • I am not unencumbered by principles. I don't negotiate any past.

The thing is that Volkswagen started more or less from zero:

    Quote:

"No thanks, this car is faulty design" Henry Ford II when the Volkswagen factory was offered to him for free after the war, 1945

I am only against steady charging of this past, because the car that you see there has nothing to do with nationalsocialism. Volkswagen follows other principles. So Volkswagen should be treated and respected due to their principles.

  • I suppose those who don't appreciate fine German or Japanese cars get exactly what they deserve, American ones.

  • And by the way, your talk of "weaponry" etc. in the context of the Holocaust shows that you really don't even understand what it was. I think 6 million slaughtered is worth reading up on, if nothing else.

(And please don't bother coming back at me with some regurgitated Wikipedia factoids; just keep them to yourself.)

  • I really don't know what is it with your grudge with the Germans. The Holocaust has ended decades ago. What Hitler did made pages through history but what is done is done. That cannot be changed. BTW, sure Hitler and many others caused the Holocaust but there are many others that were innocent. Besides, Hitler never meant any harm in making a car company. Look how many people can afford cars nowadays? If you decide to bring in some history crap about the Holocaust, please don't bring it here.

  • Well, I'm a German student and I understand that people won't forget the holocaust. I hope they won't! Watch out, this isn't just some history cou can read in your school books. If we ever forget what happened, it will happen again.

In Germany we learn a lot about our history. Two years ago we went to Poland and visited Auschwitz, the biggest concentration camp. It's something I'll never forget.

But I also won't forget the kindness and hospitality of the Polish people.

  • And Kraków, of course, one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to. Nobody can be blamed, because the name of a car reminds him of a horrible crime. BUT because Hitler founded Volkswagen (together with Porsche) this is not a reason to forbid them. These cars today aren't the ones Hitler used or something. Hitler also built our highways (the Autobahnen). Shall we demolish them, because of that?

  • If we would try to wipe out all the things that remind of Hitler then we would have to wipe out our entire country. Our country is full with (hidden) memories. But as I said, we have to remember, so why change the name "Volkswagen"? You can't leave your past behind, but it can make you wiser. It's hard to be proud of my country, but I am. But not of it's history. But I think we should all be less patriotic and more openminded and cosmopolitan. We share one world. Why not be proud of it?

  • I know this might be hard (to understand), because I hope everybody has a home, a family, a region, a country he belongs to. And it's not false to love that country. But he is also part of the world. And the world is split in many countries. And that means he is connected to everybody on this planet. Think in a new dimension. No country should rule another one. No country should fight another one.

  • No one should be too proud of his own country, because then he might not see the beauty of the other countries.

Do I sound naive? Yeah, I do. But as Martin Luther King said: I have a dream. There's no use in arguing about VW and Hitler. Hitler is dead. But we won't forget him, as his shadow will always lie on the world. So why don't we face the FUTUR being aware of the past? And speaking of we, I don't mean only the Germans, I mean all creatures living.

  • And I mean not only WWII, I mean the whole past! No country has a clear conscience. No epoch is the epitome of peace. And we'll never reach peace on earth. At least not everywhere. But we can try.

    I hope you understand.

And everything just because of a tv commercial...

  • Thank you, Danke, PhillySophia, well felt & spoken, good visions. Yes we can. Love you for that.

  • very nice commercial :) bravo.

  • beautiful

  • Nice touch at the end of this video, which looks like 35mm film :)

  • nice one

  • wow very emotional nice AD

  • So beautiful!!!

  • great ad...

  • I cried haha.

    good commercial.

  • this is good commercial

  • nice guy

  • what i really love about this is there's no dumb white guy or dumb black guy. it shows to races that have had a rough past getting along.

  • What in the commercial implies they had a rough past? The blind guy might have been poor since he seemed to be walking to his destination, but he was well dressed and his son seemed middle class, and the white guy seemed well off, (VW is not for poor people). We all should get off the race issues - not bring them up again and again, just treat everyone normal.

  • That's right, spread the love.

  • Racism is a symptom of intolerance, just like bigotry.

Only a hypocrite write about people getting along then call someone a dumb shit for misunderstanding them.

  • That was for yomamma565 in case people were left wondering.

  • haha, he didn't misunderstand, he was trying to shit talk other people. I was verbally attacked, did you just expect me to run to my corner and cry bout it? sorry, I'm not as much of a push over as you.

  • Poor because he's walking? Well I could hardly picture the blind guy driving... unless he lived in Maryland....

  • Kinda my point, what in the world implies that they had a rough past? Nothing, Nada, Zilch. My point is that you would really have to search hard for evidence of a rough past, and the only thing might be that he was walking, which would indicate poorness because he has no one to help him, no blind dog, no cash for bus fare. But that is far fetched - my point. I just think yomamma was overgeneralizing. THAT IS ALL.

  • lol

  • or Cloud Cuckoo land

  • Same thing. lol

  • @pf126p What is that supposed to mean?

  • @cutegal20754 What is what supposed to mean?

  • @pf126p Your Missing the point

  • @pf126p xD rofl

  • great really touching

  • It's terrific!

Does anyone know the name of the song in the ad?

  • Winding Road - Bonnie Somerville

  • Thanks!

  • aw :]

  • This is a beautiful little piece of art. Subtle, well-made, tugging at your heart... and yet, making you smile at the end.

    one perfect minute.

    congratulations.

  • Gefaellt mir sehr!5*!

  • Great as usual.

  • 5 gwiazdek i tyle ;)

  • That was a fantastic and uplifting advert, thankyou for posting that. And I agree, I wish they had the US advertising staff outside the US, the ads are terrible and low budget here in Australia...

  • I know that it probably doesn't mean much now but this ad is actually probuced in South Africa and not the USA...

  • lol..South Africa have alot of good VW adds...i used to live there for ten years..in Joburg =]

  • thank you! i was wondering, why the steering wheel is on the right side xD

  • I don't know. I think the Australian public-service adverts are top-notch. (There are a lot here on YouTube.)

  • I meant the australian vw add's sorry, they're very low rent and don't represent the customers very well... the Aussie public service ads are generally very confronting, and often uncomfortable to watch especially the pedestrian, drink driving and drug related ads (the ice ads in particular). They're still very effective though and get a lot of publicity when they come out.

I just think VW Aus could benefit from some of the foreign ads, even if the steering wheel is on the "wrong" side.

  • Re: Aussie public-service ads... confronting, uncomfortable... yes indeed, I would share that opinion. But that's the point, innit? I bet they work! I've been very impressed, anyway. :o

  • WTF? Why didn't they ever show this ad in Germany? Awesome video. Thank you very much for uploading it.
