Heres another way that looks better =D

1. Get something thats light e.g. sandstone or sand. Dont use cobblestone as it will look shit.

2. Get a shitload of torches

3. Make a 3x3 square and put on block at the corners and in the middle so it looks like a 5 on a die.

3. Stack it with more blocks until you cant go any further up. in the middle block. dig down 1 block and place torches around you.

4. keep digging down 4 blocks and put torches every now and then.

@somebodyindahouse If you use a texture pack cobblestone is fine, its default where it looks ghastly.

Sandstone is great, though it's rarer than the ever-abundant cobblestone. Yep you need lots of torches. Thing to remember about towers is they need ALOT of blocks, especially if you are making a "liveable" tower (i.e one that can hold beds, forges, chests, etc).

Of course the really cool thing is to build a ladder shaft which goes from bedrock all the way up to the sky limit.

instead of lava i use glowstone from the nether. I Prefer to use it because i don't end up burning myself when im placeing the lava, also i noticed they're alot brighter than torches and glow at night. perfect for light houses but a pain in the butt to find in the nether!

@aliiicreed I found lava whilst digging my mine tunnels. Try digging down a bit and hopefully you brake into a cave and find lava. Thats how i found it.

@EverythinggMinecraft Also if you need to use a boat to get to your home town/spawn point at night. Lighthouses are useful in their traditional sense. Lighthouses and Waypoints (which tend to be smaller buildings which are lit up and can be used as a night time haven).

Hey i love your concept, i built a straight up rectangular lighthouse with glass alternating with wood =l couldn't figure out a source for light. After attempting to light the wood i almost burned down my tower. but then i used bloodstone and that didn't look cool from afar. So i looked 4 a lighthouse on youtube. Now writing this I am now thinking I could've used lightstone =/ but your lava looks cooler =p!
