Also, the protective cage no doubt drags some water along with it too, making it more of the boat carrying her than her actually swimming the distance on her own.

skyarsalan: The reason the cage makes it significantly easier is because it will generate a lot of current on its own. She's in the middle of that, so the water she's swimming through is already moving forward, meaning relativistically she's swimming even less distance. Ie. like walking forward on a train.

Also, swimming behind the boat makes it a *lot* easier. That's called "drafting". It breaks through the waves (and gets the water moving forward some,) and she simply follows behind it.

The only "accomplishment" this woman achieved is misleading - unsuccessfully at that - people to believe that she was going to swim 2100 miles across the Atlantic. She did not. Then she changed her story by claiming she had no intention of swimming the entire distance. If she wants acknowledgement for her deeds she should have been clear about this from the very beginning. The straight distance is 700 miles between these two islands. That means she swam 29 miles a day. That is physically impossible. That means she would have had to swim at a quick rate for a staggering 15.7 hours a day.

Having grown up in California, enjoying the surf every year and training as a long distance swimmer in high school, I think what she did was AMAZING. I know from experience how impressive her feat was. You on the other hand, had a couple days of training, nothing of real duration in water to speak of, or for a period of time.

As a long distance swimmer I swam 3 miles in the morning and 3 in the afternoon. I swam for North Hollywood High.

As for Ocean swimming, I participated in the Manhattan Beach Pier to Hermosa Beach Pier swim from the age of 17 to 27. You had to swim up and back. 4.5 miles

Your training and my training combined can't match what this lady did. Back it up with action, don't deny someone's achievement unless you can do better. I doubt you could walk 8 hours a day, day in and day out at her age.
