The Statesmen couldn't be replicated. Singing and spreading the gospel meant more than fame or anything else. This line-up was the greatest. I do love Jack Toney and Rosie Rozwell too.
I love Jake Hess's enthusiam when he sings. You can tell he was a happy man because of the smile lines etched in his face over the years when you see him on the Gaither Homecoming series. I read his autobiography. What a Christian and what a happy person! Heaven has got to be ringing with all the golden voices up there - the Statesmen, the Speers, the Blackwoods, Vestal and Howard Goodman. What a wonderful time up there!
If you watch and listen to a lot of Statesmen videos, you can hear how Elvis was influenced by Jake Hess' vocal phrasing, and by Big Chief's movements and stage presence. This is no knock on Elvis; I love Elvis. But it is cool to see that he too had favorites that he was emulating. Man, I wish that the 70's, 80's, and 90's never happened!
@mcgoodle I think Elvis to a degree emulated every member of this group, so taken was he with their sound. His love for this type of gospel music (and others) was with him to the very day he died.
The Statesmen and The Blackwoods were Elvis's first favorite Gospel singers. His mother loved them also. Elvis a teenager would walk down to Ellis auditorium in Memphis and listen to the all night gospel sings this is where he met J.D sumner. after Elvis became famous he came back to Ellis and performed this song on stage " Where Noone Stands Alone" Elvis always had the gospel in his life RIGHT UP TO THE END when he was reading the book " The Face Of Jesus" when Elvis passed away 08-16th 77.....
Denver was my aunt's brother-in-law. I was 12 when he died in 1957. Didnt get into gospel music till after his death. I always told people it was Elvis on Saturday nite and the Statesmen on Sunday morning. Still remember the old 78's.
Wish there was a video of Denver singing My God Is Real. Thanks for being able to see him.
I'd like to hear that song myself. I was about 6 when he died. But, I loved gospel music even at that age. I'm glad there's this site otherwise I would have never experienced his beautiful voice.
This is not a video--it's from an interview w/ Bill Gaither and some old Statesmen footage. BUT--you can hear Denver Crumpler singing "My God Is Real" in the background throughout the interview.
This is beautiful! Doy Ott was an outstanding baritone and should have been featured MORE in my opinion. We heard so much about Jake, Rosie and the "Chief", but Doy may have been the best voice in the group. He never did receive the recognition he rightfully deserved. Was also an outstanding gospel pianist. Just my humble opinion, but I love to give my opinion! LOL! Anyway, thanks for this beautiful song from back in the 50s. LOVED IT! MoJoPiano
Lifeless and uninspiring. It's too musical, and not at all emotional.

This was one of Elvis Presley's favorite songs. He did a great version of it. But no person or group compares to the great Statesmen.

I totally agree. Elvis did a great job. But THIS is uncomparable! I liked it much better with just the piano and bass though.

Wow! This is my first time to hear Doy sing lead. I've heard Jake, Hovie & Rozie, of course, but to hear Doy...He had such a smoothe voice, so full.
