@WillDrawenek I have one really important tip, don't be afraid to fall. if its your first time, you're gonna be spending alot of time on your butt and dont be discouraged cuz we all have to start somewhere. I skateboard regular but i snowboard goofy. have you ever tried running and sliding on ice? which ever foot you feel more comfortable sliding in front, will most likely be the way you snowboard. im an instructor and thats how all my students have learned. well have fun :)
@WillDrawenek if you skate goofy you'll probably snowboarding goofy as well. Learn to carve first. It's tough at first but if you practice you'll get used to it
alot of people are complaining about how his videos are not very inciteful.maybe if you'd stop objecting his explanation on how it should be done you'd learn something;i went snowboarding yesterday and i remembered what he said about basic manuvering when trying to turn and quote "a little weight on the back of the board nose in the air and a slight turn"it worked effectivly for my first try soooo.........yeah.....any questions???????
@jeremysc00ts hey i just went my first time this last thursday one i could give u istake things slow learn to skate the bored and mainly do heelside practice that it took me 3 trys down the bunny hill before i wentup top
Ive watched a few of this guys other videos on carving . This is the first one where he is ACTUALLY carving . Not very dynamically but to be expected in an instructional video. I started searching through this guys segments B/C in one of the other vids he was saying you should ride the tail when carving which is wrong. Here in this vid though hes got better form. Ive been teaching snowboarding for 15 years and i couldnt imaging that the aspen snowsports school would want peeps Ruddering.
Been looking at alot of these but this guy ufp1701 seems to be a really good teacher. Ive just started snowboarding was looking for some tips. I just wish I had found this guy before my frist go a snowboarding. Thumbs it up if you watch his videos too :D
@zsoccastar007 pretty dialled cam man lol anyway im going on a snow trip nxt month anyone got any tips 4 me lol never been but i feel i will take to it very easily as iused to skate a bit now i i scoot i also rode BMX for bout 1 1/2 years lol :P any tips and feedback would be much appriciated peace out :P
@jeremysc00ts also its gonna be so dif coz im a reg on BMX(good footback) but ima natural goofy on skateboard and scooter hahah peace out :P (again lol dub peace haha:)
i think the easiest way to explain carving is when you begin your turn, lets say toeside, face 45degrees diagonaly downhill, put your board on your toe edge, and try to keep going at the 45degree angle. you'll find your board naturally turns without skidding. Thats carvingXD
I def picked up some things. Mostly from just watching him carve at a high speed. But still i learned something. It's prlly not an advanced tip but still, instructional in some way.
people are hating on him and i admit that this isnt the best video but i think it actually might be the best carving video on youtube right now. At least he explained the difference between what is considered "carving" and what is a regular turn persay.
I just started snowboarding a few weeks ago, I can carve just fine on greens where the snow is nice and smooth. However on blues/blacks I have problems trying to carve, my board skids alot more and I have problems keeping control with all of the bumps. sometimes when switching from heals to toes i bounce over a bump and end up catching an edge, any tips? -Also whenever I am carving or making a turn, i get crazy pain in my leading foot, this normal?
@Skratch3hot bend ur knee's as much as possible so that u can get over bumps whitout problems and from heel to toe just practice allot. and bend ur knees at a confortable angle not just as far as it goes :P
@JDShortFilms when i lived in germany i boarded in the mountains for 2 years (once a year) and im in virginia now and i boarded last winter ......so its on and off but i know the basics
@XB0XFR34K so you find it harder to toe edge, i can understand why, i suppose it feels much more natural leaning backwards up the mountain, rather than forwards down the mountain; maybe try the falling leaf on your toe edge, and then try riding switch, then it will be really easy when you swap back round
@zachspeakz I do tree runs carefully. I do a dry run first. This is where I do it mellow to plan an attack route and make sure it's free of wells. Next run through, I go at it. If you have a clear path, carving around them is fine. However, in tight situations, you are going to want to use skidded turns. This is sort of like a fish tail movement with the tail of your board. The purpose of this is to make quick and tight turns while scraping your speed so you don't go too fast right into a tree.
@Zigz94 Ah.. I thought you were hating on Shaun White in general. I saw a lot of haters turn into supporters after his performance in the Olympics. He was very visibly head and shoulders above the rest.
@iz2sicc What this guy in the video is doing is allowing the sidecut of the board to dictate the turn radius. If you want deeper, tighter carves, upper body will come into play. There are situations where you are going to need to turn those shoulders. Especially in mogul fields. Try navigating a mogul field using just your lower body. Upper body and hip usage is also needed in steep runs. You are right about the arm thing though. Keep them tucked and steady.
@ezekiel0920 seriously ? i found it like waaaay harder to carve on the toe edge. But what i did was that i started driving down the hill while braking in an toe edge position. And then i started to get a feeling of it
I have snowboarded a few times and go regularly every year, but I can still use some tips. Basically my question is when your snowboarding in powder, you keep the weight on the back and on groomed you use the front?
@d0pod Yeah, I'd say you are. I didn't learn this until last year, but I wish I had learned it first. Because when I was not able to go at a speed I could handle. I usually just tried to stop, but Id be going to fast and crash. If I knew how to carve I could more control my speed, but it doesnt matter now. Thats when I was little, and snowboarding. Now I can stop at any speed at any time. Like when I come flying up to a ski patrol, and hit the brakes so they dont pull me inside to lecture me.
@d0pod i guess your right.... i wouldn't say its advanced by any means but i would say its an intermediate technique.... im not saying im great at snowboarding but i have gotten to colorado multiple winters and still have trouble carving.... occasionally catch an edge whenever i lean forward that mite just be my fault though with the way i have my board set up :/
I think he's skiing , I can't really tell except for a few seconds of his shadow. he looks like he's standing straight. I film my friends while riding, it's so hard to keep your upper body still while riding...
Actually, it is very informative for novice boarders. Most beginners think they carve when they're actually just dragging the sides of the board along the snow. This guy shows proper form by using the edges of his board.
i'm a snowboarder and i hate it when skiers just stop suddenly in front of ya. i ended up crashing into this one guy cos he just stopped and i couldn't get round him, he broke one of his poles and i had to pay for it! :(
@stevenb112 dude! i know i was going down hill, just cruising, and this skier flies past me as im carving left and hits the right side of my board. he just went flying and lost a ski when that happened i just went right past him down the hill and laughed as i was going by
I do both, skiing and boarding.. so I know as boarder the skiiers are annoying but it's the same when yoire a skiier!
They always go in the way of eatch others that's just the way it goes
but i think you have to watch anyway how close you go to the next person, specially to skiier.. they can't look what's coming behind befor they stoped!!
steven - that was your own fault for following too close. people below you ALWAYS have the right of way. That's like saying you rear ended a car and blaming on the person in front of you - you didn't give yourself enough space between you and the car.
what is the easiest way to understand carving and how to carve? do you use your shoulders or your hips to carve? i've learned by trial and error how to steer and control speed... sort of.
hey Beanz you obviuosly are not stupid and understand reference alignments, fundamental movements and board performace concepts, and how they are inter-connected in our riding.
i'm guessing you qare maybe Cert 1 or 2 somewhere?
His not that bad. Most people think a carve is the same as a normal skidded turn. Most have never even seen a proper carve in real life. First time i saw it properly done was i watched one of my instructor examiners when i first started out instructing, straight lined a mini cliff and pulled out into a massive toe turn into a beginner run, looked unreal. Can you explain to me what dynamic carving is in technical cause i will understand what you mean. i think im doing it now but feedback is good
well hes not a beginner definately. i get frustrated with the lack of good riders and good information on the net about snowboarding lol sorry maybe im just a nut. if you look at racers, there carving is kind of extreme. Firstly, it means a basic carve just means u tilt ur board in the as in enter your turn and then just chill and let the board carve. your letting your board do everything after u set it up in the first 1/4 of the turn. There are alot of ways of different dynamic carves
but i will just explain one right now called bending turns. This is used by racers to boost speed. During your turn, you keep maximizing the pressure u exert on your board and keep angulating more and more, the most you can. At the end of the turn, your going to release all that by pushing on your board one last time, but this time, by extending your knees. Basically your just standing up on your board again. By doing this, it releases all the pressure and flex on your board (your board
naturally bends as you carve because of the sidecut, il explain that if u dont understand later) and as the flex extends, it pops the board and you release all the pressure on your board latterally making your board catch speed. you can also use this effectively on powder. anyways, this is different from a basic carve turn because now ur 1)angulating more 2)exerting "dynamic" pressure on your board throughout ur turn 3) making the board perform more. if you ride like this, its more fun too:D
Ive seen many instructors who didnt know the difference between inclination and angulation that were star members of the snowboard instructor team. anyways i dont think hes been snowboarding for too long. Just look at his toeside edge. he doesnt even rotate his upper body properly. his torso is always open on his toes.
u dont rotate your upper body so that u can tilt ur board. Its so that your spine is not twisted the other way. so if ur a regular, a toeside turn means ur turning to ur right. If ur spine is twisted to the left that means that your body is unstable because the lowerbody will want to untwist and follow ur upper body. and yes lol i am level 3 casi certified.
hey for those wondering this is definitely a green run, they wouldnt film this on a blue because theyd want the camera man to be able to keep his control and the camera steady as well as possible
No, that is more than likely green. You can tell by the gentle slope of the run. Green runs are almost always groomed like this. Blues and Blacks are usually not groomed so there are more bumps, plus steeper inclines.
@Rokingkid12 haha, thanks! But I'm going with my friend soon an she's really good.. So I'll wanna hang out with her too! I guess I'll practice for awhile and try to get the hang of it. Then go bigger.
wow i snowboarded for 7 hours yesterday and it was the first time i had ever done anything like it besides skateboarding and skim boarding and i learned all of this in like 5 tries down the kiddie slope and then took it to the big hill....how is this advanced?
i always get going tooo fast.. so how can i slow down without falling? I try to stop but i start to like flip over. Also, where i go to snowboard is really busy so if i fall it feels like im about to get hit.
yeah i just started this season so far can do some carving but still not that good. but im going on new years eve and practicing till 12:00 it going to be awsome
it will definitely be easier, but the only way to get good is to fall. and fall again. and then fall again.... however many times it takes till you understand what your doing wrong.
i just started, and i love snowboarding, the speed is what i really like, but i dont go as fast as this guy :P cus u know, i just started. but its really fun.
im 15 and i started when i was 8. Iv been boarding for 7 years and well, this guy seems to be going an average speed, i go this fast ,or faster when i board. this is probably because i love the speed, so my carves are smaller and faster. I am surprised hes going that fast on a slope that doesn't look very steep. Anyway, to those of you that are nervous of speed, i just takes time, Suggestion: practice carving on a slope that is intermidate. Once your comfortable, take it gradually faster
I got the same problem.. I've also been snowboarding for a couple of years but when I get something close to "high speed" I just break and turn around. Looks so easy to carve but it certainly ain't..
:) went snowboarding today and took some of the advices you guys gave me and it was good.
I guess it was all in my mind. I was able to carve, bit rusty but i did it. And the speed, still freaking out about it but just by leaning on my FRONT foot i had more control of my board and it was awesome.
.... I learned nothing

V1BRYANTV1 2 years ago
what is the easiest way to understand carving and how to carve? do you use your shoulders or your hips to carve? i've learned by trial and error how to steer and control speed... sort of.
Elizfoshizz 2 years ago
the only way to learn how to snowboard is watch footage and try it again and again
matt1545 2 years ago 2
speed guts and let the snowboard do its work. try to feel the edge of the snowboard when you lean then go for it.

thats awesome! he has the whole mountain to himself!

hey Beanz you obviuosly are not stupid and understand reference alignments, fundamental movements and board performace concepts, and how they are inter-connected in our riding.
i'm guessing you qare maybe Cert 1 or 2 somewhere?

His not that bad. Most people think a carve is the same as a normal skidded turn. Most have never even seen a proper carve in real life. First time i saw it properly done was i watched one of my instructor examiners when i first started out instructing, straight lined a mini cliff and pulled out into a massive toe turn into a beginner run, looked unreal. Can you explain to me what dynamic carving is in technical cause i will understand what you mean. i think im doing it now but feedback is good
subzerostorm 2 years ago
well hes not a beginner definately. i get frustrated with the lack of good riders and good information on the net about snowboarding lol sorry maybe im just a nut. if you look at racers, there carving is kind of extreme. Firstly, it means a basic carve just means u tilt ur board in the as in enter your turn and then just chill and let the board carve. your letting your board do everything after u set it up in the first 1/4 of the turn. There are alot of ways of different dynamic carves
beanazz 2 years ago
but i will just explain one right now called bending turns. This is used by racers to boost speed. During your turn, you keep maximizing the pressure u exert on your board and keep angulating more and more, the most you can. At the end of the turn, your going to release all that by pushing on your board one last time, but this time, by extending your knees. Basically your just standing up on your board again. By doing this, it releases all the pressure and flex on your board (your board
beanazz 2 years ago
naturally bends as you carve because of the sidecut, il explain that if u dont understand later) and as the flex extends, it pops the board and you release all the pressure on your board latterally making your board catch speed. you can also use this effectively on powder. anyways, this is different from a basic carve turn because now ur 1)angulating more 2)exerting "dynamic" pressure on your board throughout ur turn 3) making the board perform more. if you ride like this, its more fun too:D
beanazz 2 years ago
well i think hes probably been snowboarding an d skiing for a while if he works in Aspen so.. not a fool =]
blackknight22w 2 years ago
Ive seen many instructors who didnt know the difference between inclination and angulation that were star members of the snowboard instructor team. anyways i dont think hes been snowboarding for too long. Just look at his toeside edge. he doesnt even rotate his upper body properly. his torso is always open on his toes.
beanazz 2 years ago
i dont need to rotate my upper body any further as i can tilt the board on edge enough by angulating at my ankles and knees!
kkeegan66 2 years ago
u dont rotate your upper body so that u can tilt ur board. Its so that your spine is not twisted the other way. so if ur a regular, a toeside turn means ur turning to ur right. If ur spine is twisted to the left that means that your body is unstable because the lowerbody will want to untwist and follow ur upper body. and yes lol i am level 3 casi certified.
beanazz 2 years ago
I wish you would show more to using your knees while carving... Coz when I am trying to carve I am going for side to side... loose speed and braking

hey for those wondering this is definitely a green run, they wouldnt film this on a blue because theyd want the camera man to be able to keep his control and the camera steady as well as possible
111HYPE111 2 years ago
no firtst you learn to do skid turns so you have high control..then u learn to carv

is this black diamond? (if you hadn't guessed yet, i'm new to snowboarding).
AaronBchillen 2 years ago
No, that is more than likely green. You can tell by the gentle slope of the run. Green runs are almost always groomed like this. Blues and Blacks are usually not groomed so there are more bumps, plus steeper inclines.
TBaz1216 2 years ago
This is a green circle slope.
iS2Tam 2 years ago
no its more like a red..maybe a blue....black iamond is almost twice as steep as this
Sn0wFreak 2 years ago
@Rokingkid12 haha, thanks! But I'm going with my friend soon an she's really good.. So I'll wanna hang out with her too! I guess I'll practice for awhile and try to get the hang of it. Then go bigger.
Ilas4ever 2 years ago
wow i snowboarded for 7 hours yesterday and it was the first time i had ever done anything like it besides skateboarding and skim boarding and i learned all of this in like 5 tries down the kiddie slope and then took it to the big hill....how is this advanced?
yodoo17 2 years ago
i always get going tooo fast.. so how can i slow down without falling? I try to stop but i start to like flip over. Also, where i go to snowboard is really busy so if i fall it feels like im about to get hit.
Ilas4ever 2 years ago
Search for ''sideslipping''. It's a really simple way of riding and the best way of stopping... Good luck!

Gavinsx 2 years ago
yeah i just started this season so far can do some carving but still not that good. but im going on new years eve and practicing till 12:00 it going to be awsome
reapersdeath877 2 years ago
wow i did that witout knowing it was carving i thought it was normal turning
airsoftkidmac11 2 years ago
it will definitely be easier, but the only way to get good is to fall. and fall again. and then fall again.... however many times it takes till you understand what your doing wrong.

i just started, and i love snowboarding, the speed is what i really like, but i dont go as fast as this guy :P cus u know, i just started. but its really fun.
Itachi1024 2 years ago
im 15 and i started when i was 8. Once your comfortable, take it gradually faster
burBURTONton 2 years ago
same with me i dont like going really fast because i dont want to hit something or wippe out badly
MDskater97 2 years ago
@kayeatsbear dude im the same way I cant go really fast or im afraid ill wipe out
simpsonscollectibles 2 years ago
@kayeatsbear Keep practicing, and slowly go faster and faster. Soon you'll be going fast and you wont even know it.
eric11600 2 years ago
@kayeatsbear well all you can do it i quess try to love speed and if u dont like speed carve sharoer so u dont go as fast
fallenskater2112 2 years ago
awesome
alexpjewel 2 years ago
I got the same problem.. I've also been snowboarding for a couple of years but when I get something close to "high speed" I just break and turn around. Looks so easy to carve but it certainly ain't..
JtDiabla 2 years ago
@JtDiabla @fallenskater2112 @eric11600 @simpsonscollectibles @MDskater97
:) went snowboarding today and took some of the advices you guys gave me and it was good.
I guess it was all in my mind. I was able to carve, bit rusty but i did it. And the speed, still freaking out about it but just by leaning on my FRONT foot i had more control of my board and it was awesome.
