  • wow, thats a very young Pat McCormick i n the picture. when i was a kid he was the one that gave the weather reports. I wonder where he's at now?

  • put the tape recorder next to the tv speaker?

where is the one THE MUSIC IS TOO LOUD

  • That photo must have been from the first incarnation of Charley & Humphrey, since Humphrey is wearing a different hat.

  • That photo must have been from the first incarnation of Charley & Humphrey, since Humprey is wearing a different hat.

  • Thanks for all the comments. It truly brought back some great memories. It would be awesome to see those videos and have someone do some documentary on what those kids are doing today! Hopefully someone might have recorded those PSA's on Beta when watching Ultraman or some show during that timeslot.

  • Someone must have recorded them! There are lots of old tapes from the 80s still out there. Plus, all these public service announcements ran during children's programming, and lots of parents recorded those for their children. I used to have a few of these PSAs once upon a time, until I stupidly, stupidly taped over them as a young teenager. We just have to keep our eyes open! SFChronicle has posted some of the Charley and Humphrey bits.

  • @AnnainCA someone used to have a full websight of them...

  • i was a kid in the bay area in the 80s i grew up in east oakland and i remember Charley and Humphre shorts like it was yesterday i miss the i,m proud to be a mexican american kid walking down freuitvale ave i met him 2 years ago still lives in the neighborhood in oakland also the one about the girl imagening she was a firefighter or a cop classic ktvu memorys i miss the 80s ....

  • "i miss the i,m proud to be a mexican american kid walking down freuitvale ave i met him 2 years ago still lives in the neighborhood in oakland also the one about the girl imagening she was a firefighter or a cop classic ktvu memorys i miss the 80s"

LOL I'm glad you remember those PSAs...But, OaklandLatino:

Those PSAs were from the 1970's, I ought to know because I saw those PSAs right before CAPTAIN COSMO! ha ha ha ha ha

You're prolly wondering: Who the fuck is Captain Cosmo?!?!?!?!?

  • I can remember bits and pieces of some of the "I am proud to be a Mexican/Chinese/Italian/Japanese American" clips.

The Italian-American one featured a heavy-set little boy looking into a bakery window.

The Mexican-American one made reference to have once been farm workers.

Either the Chinese- or the Japanese-American one featured the line "Now we are doctors, lawyers...and dentists.

Were there others? I just remember those four.

  • There was the one where kid says "I'm proud to be a Black American." During the spot, he's shown doing things with his father. "Dad and I like to...." etc. And yes, it was the Chinese American one that cited the doctors and lawyers part. It ended this way, I can still hear it now: "The next time YOU see Chinese Americans, think about their contribution to the Bay Area." I'd love to see all those again.

  • This is originally audio I recorded in 1982. I think it's cool that it's getting around! I originally submitted it to TV Party awhile back. This is great, thanks for using it!

  • "Your gonna need LOTS of glue!" I was hoping this would find it's way here. I loved watching these as a kid!

  • When I say "Glue, I need lots of glue" I get smiles from people like me who grew-up on Charlie and Humphrey

  • i can still picture that short in my head! lol

  • Cool! I remember all of the Charlie & Humphrey PSAs. Anyone else remember Ch.2's "I'm proud to be a__________American" PSAs? Also there was a PSA with a bunch of kids working on an erector set project, and 1 by 1 the kids get bored and watch TV, until 2 kids are left to finish it?

  • Oh, my goodness! I completely forgot about the erector set PSA until just now.

Please, please, please...someone must have recorded these. If anyone has them, I would love to see them again.

  • There was even a PSA on Gays!

    But, that ran late night.

  • Darn, I was hoping to see the classic "Bits and Pieces" puzzle piece logo, but I loved this nonetheless. There was a time where I couldn't go one day watching KTVU after school without seeing a C&H or one of those classic "I'm Proud to be a (insert ethnicity here) American" segments. Plus, I always liked Humphrey's Raiders sweatshirt. :) Thanks for the clip.

  • OMG!!! Glue! Lots of glue! Total nostalgia trip! Thanks guy!

  • does anyone from the bay area remember watching Channel 9/pbs shows during the summers in the late 70's early 80's? They had a special name for that programming 'block' and I cannot remember what it was called. They played shows like Vegetable Soup, Newtons Apple, 321 contact, reading rainbow.... help?

  • Yes! It was called "Vacation Video". I had the magazines that you could order from Channel 9.

  • YOU ARE MY HERO... hate to admit that I sorta had sleepleass nights about that... but I did... I've been on the hugest nostalgia kick lately - and that programming was so fantastic! thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou !!!

  • Bits and Pieces !

It's so funny, so many people from the bay area where I work at, always mention GLUE, I NEED GLUE, YOU'RE GONNA NEED LOTS OF GLUE !

    this is great !

  • OH NO! ALL trace of the tapes gone? It ran in Phoenix briefly around 1963-65 - I was 3 years old and SCARED TO DEATH of Charley! He had BIGGO teeth and looked like he'd take a huge chomp out of you if you got too close to that screen!

But I've got to watch these characters again!!!

  • Another memory: during commercial breaks, they'd show those brief title cards with a tiny portrait of Charley in the corner of the screen - I used to hide my eyes when it was shown, Charley looked so sinister, with that evil smirking grin and them little dark eyes - and the end titles also showed some unfriendly drawings of Charley, real spooky and in yourr face!

Well jeez I wuz a kid.

  • Does anyone have that special Christmas record with Charley and Humphrey? A single that featured Charley reciting Twas the Night befor Xmas, and Humphrey kept interrupting the story - Charley sighed and explained all the finer points as the story went along.

(This little single might be worth something, it came out in the mid 60s)

  • Wow, this a classic!

  • Sadly, I think we are all out of luck. Last I heard, none of the shorts still exist. I already own the soundbite as somebody had the foresite to hold his tape recorder up to his television. Sad...real sad. I would love to have some of the old TV Pow and Captain Cosmic shows.

  • Bob Wilkins has some of the CC shows on sale on his website. Google him and see what happens.

  • That would be me, EARYCH... I used to hold my little tape recorder up to the TV and record all kinds of stuff like this. I'm glad it's being enjoyed! I never thought that when I submitted to one place (TV Party) that it would get around the internet like this! Very cool..... Sebastian Morgan... Atlanta, GA

  • I remember "dialing for dollars" was for the adults and then they came out with the phone-in gameshow (pow?) for kids - sort of like space invaders that fired a missle upon the command "pow".

  • "So'sd I punch'd him in the nose to get his attention."

I keep hoping one of these days someone would post the videos.

  • I love this! thanks. Oh how it brings me back! My friend recently found the "who broke my window" psa on here, and so i started looking for the charley and humphrey bee hive episode. I also love the "i'm proud to be a chinese american" psa where they walk around Chinatown.

  • Wow. That brings me back. I'd pay money for this DVD. KTVU, get with it and make this DVD!!! I'll make it, just give me the source, baby. Anyone remember the name of the cat that was on this show? "Hows about I punch you in da nose!".

  • Don't know if someone responded to you yet, but the name of the cat was "Pussyfoot".

  • Pussyfoot!!!! Yeah, that was it!!! Man, wow, that brings me back. Thanks for that.

  • KTVU doesn't have the tapes. I've tried to get them. They were Destroyed.

  • @ToasterBoyYT I was wondering if anyone knew how to write to Pat McCormick. I guess it would be through KTVU of course. I thought it would be nice to let him know how important and special Charlie and Humphrey were...ARE ....to us. "The boys" as Pat calls them were my afternoon companions when I was hospitalized over the years as a kid.

  • Long live Charley and Humphrey!!!!!

  • Also, do you have any of the other KTVU PSAs? I am dying to see "I am proud to be a Mexican/Italian/Chinese/Japanese American!" again, or the one about the girl fantasizing about her future career options, or the one with a group of kids playing and working together to a Beatles tune.

  • Ann, I remember each and every one of those spots you mentioned and have been looking for them too! I was also a bay area kid in the '80s and remember all of these fondly.

  • I remembered a little more about the Beatles tune. I think the whole scene of the children playing and working was set to the song "All Together Now."

  • Yes, it was

  • Aaaah! Thank you *so* much for posting this. I'd been hoping for one of these pop up on YouTube for quite some time since I haven't seen any of the Charley and Humphrey spots since I was little in the 1980s. Do you have any of the actual skits, or just the audio? It would be great to see some of the others, especially the one about the bees and the Coast Guard.

  • WOW.......epic!!!

  • thank you!

    Glue, I need glue...

  • bay area KTVU's "Bits and Pieces" PSAs

Its been 12 years since I left there.

I acually thought they were still playing these.

  • i miss them!
