  • I would never compare a 7d with a pocket camera, which at the end is the S95. The 1st one is a PRO camera and the other one is available for people who would just like to enter/start into the pro cameras.

  • /watch?v=4XWRDNPsnE8

  • The autofocus is all over the place though with that wide aperture. Kind of annoying in video mode, though nice in still.

  • the testing is unfair... the blue light registers in the sensor... do them exactly and dont say which is wich and I can very confidently GUARRANTEE you over 90% of the viewers of this video will be picking the s95 as a better video than the 7d...

  • if i make a movie using s95 would i be able to transfer that to film and show on BIG screen in the cinema?

It does offer full HD is nt it..

  • @priyankeshu1 No, only 720P.

  • if anyone is reading this could you recommend a hard protective case for the Canon S95. I am looking for something really slim that can take a additional battery and memory card in it.

    Cheers

  • I found this review quite useless. Can't compare hi-fi engineering on a youtube video. The conclusion was obvious so what's the point of 6:25 talking about things that are pretty much obvious.

  • Thanks @nate42nd for this and the related s95 videos! Most striking for me in this one is the difference in contrast; I didn't really find myself noticing the noise, but the blacks looked blacker in the DSLR version; it generally looked richer. Love the gorilla :-)

  • @MrMcjamison That's true. The quality is generally better with everything in the DSLR. To be honest....I have a hard time using my S95 instead of my 7D anymore. The S95 is SO much easier to carry.....but not to use and not to get good quality images. I LOVE my 7D and don't know what I would do without it.

  • Would you say you are sacrificing some depth of field with the powershot camera, since part of the reason for better performance in low light is a slightly bigger aperture. Have you run any of those tests yet?

  • @qigong1001 Good question but there is no way to know the aperture setting for movie mode. I have noticed the S95 stays in focus pretty well so it must have a cut-off point at F/4 or something. Then it probably uses ISO for the rest to make up for the low light.

  • @nate42nd Yeah. Regardless, its such advanced technology. It amazes me, what that little thing can do. Thanks.

  • thanks for the great review!

  • @TheAFROMUSIC i'm sure this difference in between simply semi pro and pro is little these days. d7000 is all we need. go to... freedslr . co m remove spaces and take a chance to bring home a new Nikon D7000

  • The blue lights in the computer case were on for the 7D test but not the S95.... tut, tut

  • I got the feeling even with same sensor 7d at 3200 iso is much better than 550d

  • @robertlam18 They are not the same sensor. They're close, but the 7D has different elements in the sensor.

  • Thank you for this video!

  • Thank you so much for this. I am not nearly as knowledgeable as you, but I'm looking for a good ultra-compact that takes good video/pics. This helped me decide on the S95.

  • @thekooosh Let me know if you have any questions about it and join my flickr group. We can have better discussions there. I will help you and we will have some weekly - monthly assignments. It will be fun.

  • For some reason I keep missing when u post any videos, and it turns out I may not have been subscribed lol

Anyways good video, Thanks for posting it.. I've been looking at this camera and a definite weak spot for me in general is being able to record is very low light and pictures in low light

  • @TylertheGeek28 Hey Tyler. I have used it for about 6-8 weeks now. I really love it. I am glad I got it. Even with my 7D the S95 seems to get plenty of use. I like to shoot video with it, and I can carry it everywhere. It's also great for low light. The low light moe on the top dial is amazing. ou can take a good pic in a dark room. Only like 3mp but that's enough for what most people are doing with the image. Good to hear from you man.

  • In the end though you have to be impressed with the S95 just for having the ability to hang in there with the DSLR. Very impressive for a point and shoot.

  • jeez. i love canon s95 but it has no optical zoom during video recording.

  • @21krizchristensen That IS a bad deal. Good camera though.

  • well... this video helps me to be sure on the S95!

I need a photo/video camera that does good on any lighting condition, pocketable, and it must be as innexpensive as possible! I really want manual controls, at least in still photo, to learn more about it and in the future go for a performance camera or even a DSLR if I get reeeeally interested in the hobby!

the good quality stereo audio on the S95 is another cool feature that atracts me!

thank you very much for the reviews and tests!

  • @gabrieow The S95 IS a great choice. It has a lot of features and will take you to the next level. The stereo mics work great and the manual adjustments are nice to have as well. It's a little expensive for a point and shoot but it's also the best at this size range (by far) It's worth it.

  • @nate42nd I was going for anything under 300 dollars (I live in Brazil), and S95 is in this price range, and it appers to be the best choice!

It appears to me that i only get substancial better image and options if I go for a performance camera, such as a Rebel XSI, and pay 250 more, which is totally out of my current budget! (and still, S95 seams better for portable [no external mic and stuff] HD video)

thank you very much for the attention and information!

  • If I were to compare the 7D to the S95 I'd set them to the exact same settings. Same focal distance, same iso, same aperture and of course same lighting. This is all possible with the S95 controls.

Also the light from the computer is helping. Remember the Higher the ISO sensitivity the more it will take in any form of light.

  • @liquidSpin The S95 has no manual controls. That is the main reason I used 3200 ISO on the 7D. The S95 only has E/V exposure compensation. That's it. I used 0 E/V on the S95.

  • @nate42nd The S95 does have manual control. I guess this video you're referring to when the S95 is in video mode? If that's the case, you're correct. The video mode is very limited.

However, you can adjust the exposure value, ISO, and aperature with this point and shoot camera.

  • @nate42nd The S95 has manual controls, as well as shutter speed or aperture priority.

  • @ryan270286 Yes, it does.

  • Hi Nate. I love your test videos, very informative. I'm surprised you don't have more views and subs, since your videos are great!

My S95 is in the post, arriving from Amazon, can't wait to get my hands on it.

PS: Keep up the great work and do post more test videos and maybe even some tips for good photography, especially on the S95, like what settings to use in which circumstances, night shots, landscape, fast moving objects, artistic slow shutter shots, etc.

    Thumbs up + sub!

  • @bluelondon Thanks. I will try to get some more videos up on the S95. It seems to be very popular. It's a great camera.

  • Nice demo. The s95 sounds like it has better audio though.

  • @LEXPIX The S95 has stereo audio. You can however use an external mic with the 7D as you may know. I am looking for one right now. The S95 is a good little camera I must say. I think you have an S90 as I recall. Are you still using it?

  • @nate42nd I just upgraded to the s95! Sold the s90. I love the improved grip and click stop feel of the dial.

  • How Can you compare a $3,000 set up to a $400.00 Cam ? Not a fair comparison.... But very positive for the S95 ..... Thanks

  • @MannyScoot That's why I compared them. I think it shows the S95 IS a good performer. Thanks

  • hi thanks for the comparison, can you do picture comparison rather than video between both of the camera,,do it in high contrast outdoor scene. daytime, preferably a backlit situation , thanks let me know if you will be doing my request.

  • @pujaantarbangsa I find that to compare images on YT is useless, btu maybe I can do one with links to a photo sharing site. You will see a big difference. Have you seen my "bokeh" video. That gives you an idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • @nate42nd yes i have seen the bokeh video.. thanks a lot. will wait for the links of ur photos upload..

  • What's the best P&S camera from canon ?

  • @Fadoosh12 This one (S95) or the G12. Same sensor. It depends on what size you wantt he camera to be. Both are great.

  • @nate42nd What about the nikon P7000 ? :)

  • @Fadoosh12 I hear the P7000 is a great camera. Don't think it's better than the S95 though. It's more like the G12 Canon.

  • i dont get it has a bigger CCD cencer then the SX30 IS

  • @rumbleforce2 This is a much nicer camera than the SX30is. It's zoom is not as long but otherwise it is a way better camera.

  • s95, its a pocketable pro dslr :)

  • @tizztube NO it's NOT anywhere close, but stilla nice camera. Aboutt he best point and shoot you can get. Cannot even come close to a DSLR. My 7D and T1i blow it out of the water! BAD. It has good image quality under a lot of conditions though. I would get one if it's the type you want but don't expect DSLR results. Not even close. I have another vid on the "bokeh" of the cameras. It shows you some of what I mean.

  • @nevergive7 Thank god there is exposure compensation on them. I use it on almost every video I take. It's a compact. I'm liking it....for a compact I can take anywhere.

  • anyone else see a stuck gray pixel at the top center of all the S95 footage?

  • @AgentHydra I think that's a hole in his wall or something.

  • @AgentHydra That was a stuck pixel (or group of pixels) I just took it back to BB because of it. It would have driven me nuts for the rest of the time I had it. They didn't have any in stock. I cannot find one anywhere. I am now thinking about getting one from the net OR a new lens. It sucks. I loved that camera, but I got it for shooting video and it was un-acceptable.

  • @nate42nd I am wondering if this developed after I got it OR if it was there from the beginning. I cannot find it in the first 10-20 videos I shot. I wonder how this happened. I took it back, but wonder how it happened. Strange if it "developed" afer I got it. It was "babied"

  • Fantastic video, S95 did pretty good job in my opinion.

  • @LaczupakabraPL Yea, it's a good little P&S to carry around. Good stuff.

  • The S95 is really good for it's size, but it really doesn't compare to the Goliath that is sthe 7D. But the 7d is just more in price and form factor.
