I read the novels about his character. Mengsk was always driven by revenge against the Confederacy for what they did to his family and planet. Tha'ts why he was relentless to the point of luring the zerg to Tarsonis. Things then just went downhill from there. And he left Kerrigan to die because she was the one who killed his family, though she doesn't remember and he never told anyone.
