You have to tune a piano but not an electric organ, maybe you shouldn't have to tune an electric guitar, that's fine. But otherwise it's just an ugly computer with 6 strings.
Lot of ok ideas really, but I honestly couldn´t see myself or anyone I know use this instrument! I remember when I was just starting with the guitar some 17 years ago, and I stumbled across the BOSS GT-5. I couldn´t believe all the sounds and effects it had... it has been in my basement for 15 years now...
@DRGK9 HAHAH WHAT?! YOU PROVED ME WRONG?! you answered like two of my questions what i didn't care about, why would you need all these effects? Such an amateur vid from supposedly the biggest guitar Company in the world. We'll look back at this in ten years when GIbson are no more, and point to the screen. "THIS is where it all started to go wrong" we will say... Shame really...
@richnetts i could not have said it better myself brother, self tunning guitars???,if it were not SO SAD i would laugh..the rumour is that Gibson is in SERIOUS financial state and that Peavey is looking too bye them, not sure if this will take place Gibson debt is HUGH!!!! i have a close friend in NY who has been with the company for some time he gives me the skinny... sad days indeed, but i dont feel sorry for them they have been STICKING it too musicians for years with there OVERPRICE guitars
It saddens me to see that this (and the new LPs and SGs as well) has a maple board. We all know why they are suddenly using maple and some other wood called "opeche" on their fingerboards. Meanwhile, Fender just came out with the "OLD-GROWTH Redwood Tele". That's right, old-growth redwood. Think they will get raided? Doubt it.
WTF is everybody's problem?! "oh where are the good old days. everything sucks now. bitch bitch bitch" then fucking kill yourself if you can't deal with change. If you want a different guitar then buy a different guitar. I think it's sweet that it tunes itself and has pre-sets. more to experiment with. and it still is a guitar. hating on change is a trend that i absolutely hate. everything changes! deal with it!
I guess those "audiophiles" are the same people who like to tune guitars by hands, play around with the different amps, knobs that go to 11, 10 different effect pedals, etc., the same people who like more screwing around with equipments than to play music. I think we need to embrace technology so we can create a box that would give you that Clapton guitar sound or Slash guitar sound with just a flick of a switch, so we can stop screwing around and start PLAYING MUSIC.
@pflau1 It's pathetic. You want to copy someone's music, rather than interpret it. And, if you don't know, tuning by hands improve your musical hearing.
@1745Bzzz Really do I need to make another analogy? I'm sure rowing a stick improves your driving, but bring that toy to the F1 world of computer controlled pedal shifters and you'd get your butt kicked. Stop living in the past!
@pflau1 Technologies...I've heard about man, who made acoustic guitar from canister for fuel. I have a lot of counter arguments, but: how many people, so many opinions. I'm sorry, if I offended you.
@pflau1 I agree with you totally, I waste so much time trying to get a sound that I forget sometimes what really matters... Unfortuantelly there are a lot of posers in this hobby who get dazzled with shit loads of buttons and knobs
@pflau1 Ya but... no real guitarist is going to have time on stage to flip a switch like this. That is why we all use pedals... also tuning isn't really that big of a deal for someone who can handle a 5,000 dollar guitar. I actually kind of like the process.
I still remember how people were complaining about that CDs sounded stale, and that playing records and tape is so much more fun because you have so much more to screw around. In fact you have so much to screw round half of the enjoyment in listening to music is to play around with the record player tone arm, cartridge, stylus angle, demagnetizing the tap deck heads, putting lubricant and protectant on records, and 1000 other things that make "listening" to music so enjoyable.
I'm considering reporting this video. I'm 15 and i think technology is great, but it doesn't belong like this on guitars. especially a Gibson! I'd expect something like this from Ibanez or something. Sorry Gibson, but you've blown it. I have an '08 SG Special and i'd rather that over this "guitar" any day of the week.
Gibson, if you are serious about doing it right you should hook up with Line6 and create a Les Paul with a built-in POD. This way you can practice with headphone without an amp. Have a touch screen interface and USB out to a computer running the Line6 software. Stick the module into the control cavity, since you moved to PC board and got a lot of room there. Add robotic tuning as well. Now THAT would be a guitar I would definitely buy.
This is a true guitar that requires real skill to play like any other real guitar. The only thing that takes away from skill would be the automatic tuners and woopty doo they shoulda invented automatic tuning decades ago... People are afraid to drop burdening pedals and in my opinion and experience having tons of pedals reminds me of a hoarder who can't let go... No offense. This guitar can have any tone with a good amp just fiddle with settings till you find your sound. Any tone all tones.
I don't think auto tuning a guitar is good a musicians. Voice or guitar, if it's auto tuned, its not genuine. Tuning is one of the fundamental skills. Gibson is trying to take that away? You want guitarists who can't even tune, to actually play and represent you? Down you will go Gibson. Please, don't do this to yourselves.
@zealand21 Tuning is a rather useless skill on a guitar. I would rather spend more time playing than tuning. Would you ask Liberace to tune his own piano? Ridiculous.
@pflau1 Doesn't mean he doesn't know how to, or that he didn't tune his own piano when he started playing, correct? "Tuning is a rather useless skill"? Really? If you are a musician, let's just say you are. When you first started playing, did you ask anyone to tune your instrument for you? Or did you at least ask for help? Or maybe, you played with an untuned instrument, which would justify your comment. Haha.
@zealand21 Does Mario Andretti change his own motor oil? Really now, there are two kinds of people on stage during a concert - those that play the guitars, and those that tune them. Which ones you want to be?
@pflau1 He probably does. To his personal ride that is. See, I never said anything about being on stage, you said that. I was aiming at the effect this would have on learning musicians, not veterans.
It's a good guitar if you just plan on messing around, but if your learning guitar, you should learn it the RIGHT way! I mean, if your a beginner, and you have this piece of crap, are you going to BOTHER to learn some basic skills, like tuning?
it's not so bad but i think it's complicated, a lot of functions and different settings on the guitar as well as the options you can get from each knob when plug it in a computer. The design is not a it's best, finish i don't know i saw it at GC it did not feel great. They went from 5500$ to 4000$, obvioulsy it's not a best seller. Happy new years to all! Best of luck for Gibson i'll keep my SG.
I like the innovation of this idea. The guitar 'electronics' hasn't changed over 60 years. But to my mind effects are very personal and to build those into a guitar...
I also think that the quality of the guitar itself is not that great.
@Tumenihobbies Do you realise the purpose of an instrument is to make beautiful music? It's not to spend time getting it in tune. If you equate tuning a guitar to shredding, I'd hate to hear you play.
i didn't really buy one. on the website it sais "Firebird X is like the world’s best street legal sports car in looks, feel and performance." but what they don't mention is that it doesn't sound like one. it's an instrument... but it looks like they forgot the main element, 'pitch'.
he said... "easier than going for vst's" - what happened to picking specific programs to augment a signature sound? wasn't that what gibson stood for? he then said, "its about 10-20k's worth under the deck". i could achieve better results on an epiphone and some free vst's.
gibson's warm fat tone is obliterated with this model. i hear an absolute mash of frequencies where this microwave of a guitar is concerned; under the hood.
the self tuning guitar was a good idea, and i credit gibson for that. it means (for a price) less time tuning and more time playing. but the day i buy this piece of shite gibson/alienware mashup thing will be the same day i become a multi billionaire and buy every single one IN THE WORLD and hold a bonfire festival in my garden.
I don't mind the onboard tuning, that would be convenient for me during my gigs, now, i hate this guitar because of all the onboard extras. It just takes away from the gibson tone we all love.
That's not a guitar, it's a computer with strings. Man, I wish someday Gibson will wake up and return to their original high-quality guitars. Enough with this Robot guitars, we want the SIMPLE guitars! I don't care to pay 10k$ for a guitar, but I want it to sound AMAZING, and for 10k$ I can get a nice '52 Les Paul. Where the good days are? Shame.
Nvidia Next Gen 4 GB Graphics card Comes with a bulit in 14 Band EQ did we mention the 3 Special effects that this guitar (piece of junk) comes with??? Reverb, Delay and yes you guessed it HORSE SHIT and don't forget that it also comes with:
USB 2.0 Connectivity 28 Mega Pixal camera A fridge A coffie machine A Sink An entire band and a hunk of steaming shit signed by gibson himself!!!!!
So instead of carrying my little pedal board with a few effects I can use with any of my guitars I'm supposed to buy this thing and be limited to what Gibson thinks are good sounding effects? For over 5 Grand?? And it looks like Andy Warhol threw up on a cheap Korean student guitar?? I'm speachless...
Definitely this is a perfect studio guitar (because you can get any sound out of it), but if you go on stage with this thing, i would laugh so hard. Bad design, but nice tone.
@MYEYESONECONOMY gibson is not dead. This guitar was just over hyped and over exposed, then they tried to cram the world in it. Have you seen the other guitars they have been realising not to long ago. A gibson lp coustom for under 3,000. I have played it and it makes up for this guitar. Also many other not over priced guitars. They are not dead
@rockandrollallnight4 i think they are dead, because the haven't come up with something new in 60 years, and this guitar is a complete failure (don't get me wrong, i have a flying v and i love it, but they should inovate ;D )
this is sad very sad, a computer than make the work for ur ears and finguers...what the hell?? if u play that shit and called urself musician let me tell u u a re a big big really big joke fuck that shit, create new pick ups or something but not a computer we have anough in the world...jesus
Gibson: if you want to convince us that this is a good thing perhaps you should pay someone who understands the guitar, someone who can play the guitar, someone who can run a video camera, someone who can record audio, and someone who can edit a video. I thought this video was a "shred" video mocking this guitar...but there is no need to "shred" it.
No doubt - this is something new. But do we need it? What about the reliability of any kind of electronic devices? I have a 1963 Firebird: I am sure NOTHING will change within the next 50 years :-) What can we expect after a few years from this guitar? Who will do the maintenance in the future and is the electronic stuff then available... Sometimes a differential design seemed to be the better choice: a simple analogue e-guitar with "external" FXs instead of the shown concept.
WHY YOU GUYS SAID THIS GUITAR IS PATHETIC AND WHATEVER THE SHIT? I'M NEW WITH GUITAR SO I SERIOUSLY DON'T GET IT! HOPE SOMEONE WILL REPLY ME AND TELL ME ABOUT IT! THANK YOU! :)
Why are you hating this guitar?! Its expensive and most of us cant probably buy it but thats no reason to hate it?!The effects are really awesome especially for those who dont have the high end pedals!Plus it isnt taking the "skill" of playing a guitar away! You still need the same amount of skill and talent to play this guitar!I mean its not helping you to do a tough solo in an easier manner or something!
If you want to make a computer with 6 strings, Knock yourself out. Just don't call it a GUITAR!!! As I watch this video, all I can think of is Bad Bad Bad JOKE! WTF Gibson?
This thing sounds like crap. Nuff Said....Technology is a great thing, but when it comes to guitars.....If its not broke don't fix it...."Analog" guitars sound fantastic...and this just doesn't...plain and simple
Aside from the robot tuning, I can just use an effects processor and do just about all the things this thing can do.
Hey, Gibson, want to impress with your hi-tech? Find a hi-tech way to bring back the Voodoo SG and sell it for $400. Now THAT would be impressive tech.
Don't get me wrong, this is probably a really nice guitar. but to me, it seems like there are way too many things that could go wrong. The auto tuning doesn't really impress me. It is cool, but it doesn't take that much time or effort to tune a guitar on stage, and it also probably takes longer to change the effects on that guitar then it does on a foot pedal, which is not useful live. It would probably be used best in the studio.
im not a fan of this new technology. the headstock looks aqward, needs binding. the 70s gibson with moog electronics was fail. this sounds great, but looks like a kids toy.
Just threw out a 15 year old Sony CD player. Can't get replacement parts for repair (chips/board). No biggie, outdated device. You can expect the same for the internals of this guitar.
@ninjaevan1 Funny! This guitar is a conceptual masterpiece. Unless the technology which makes it all that it is brings the beast to life and it revolts against its maker, it also represents an obvious practical achievement. That said, it's not for the purist. I like your sense of humor -- something which seems to be painfully lacking in the literal, defensive, stiff-as-a-board jackasses who police the comments left on YouTube for compliance with their personal standards of propriety. Firewood X!
this guitar will be a collectors item, i don't see any major player using it displaying it yet and probably won't. the tuning things is cool! but it will end up like the old fender Jaguar!
You have to tune a piano but not an electric organ, maybe you shouldn't have to tune an electric guitar, that's fine. But otherwise it's just an ugly computer with 6 strings.

Ha! 3:37 he goes through puberty!

I think it's sweet that it tunes itself and has pre-sets. more to experiment with. and it still is a guitar. hating on change is a trend that i absolutely hate. everything changes! deal with it!
lemonjuicer 1 month ago
I guess those "audiophiles" are the same people who like to tune guitars by hands, play around with the different amps, knobs that go to 11, 10 different effect pedals, etc., the same people who like more screwing around with equipments than to play music. I think we need to embrace technology so we can create a box that would give you that Clapton guitar sound or Slash guitar sound with just a flick of a switch, so we can stop screwing around and start PLAYING MUSIC.
pflau1 1 month ago 6
@pflau1 It's pathetic. You want to copy someone's music, rather than interpret it. And, if you don't know, tuning by hands improve your musical hearing.
1745Bzzz 2 weeks ago
@1745Bzzz Really do I need to make another analogy? I'm sure rowing a stick improves your driving, but bring that toy to the F1 world of computer controlled pedal shifters and you'd get your butt kicked. Stop living in the past!

@pflau1 Technologies...I've heard about man, who made acoustic guitar from canister for fuel. I have a lot of counter arguments, but: how many people, so many opinions. I'm sorry, if I offended you.
1745Bzzz 1 week ago
@pflau1 I agree with you totally, I waste so much time trying to get a sound that I forget sometimes what really matters... Unfortuantelly there are a lot of posers in this hobby who get dazzled with shit loads of buttons and knobs
adrianoaguilar 1 week ago
@pflau1 Ya but... no real guitarist is going to have time on stage to flip a switch like this. That is why we all use pedals... also tuning isn't really that big of a deal for someone who can handle a 5,000 dollar guitar. I actually kind of like the process.
mattjfox 1 week ago
I still remember how people were complaining about that CDs sounded stale, and that playing records and tape is so much more fun because you have so much more to screw around. In fact you have so much to screw round half of the enjoyment in listening to music is to play around with the record player tone arm, cartridge, stylus angle, demagnetizing the tap deck heads, putting lubricant and protectant on records, and 1000 other things that make "listening" to music so enjoyable.
pflau1 1 month ago
I'm considering reporting this video. I'm 15 and i think technology is great, but it doesn't belong like this on guitars. especially a Gibson! I'd expect something like this from Ibanez or something. Sorry Gibson, but you've blown it. I have an '08 SG Special and i'd rather that over this "guitar" any day of the week.
117KMAN 1 month ago
Stop complaining, Gibson is just experimenting.
deathpony01 1 month ago

CapnCrossbones 1 month ago
I don't think auto tuning a guitar is good a musicians. Voice or guitar, if it's auto tuned, its not genuine. Tuning is one of the fundamental skills. Gibson is trying to take that away? You want guitarists who can't even tune, to actually play and represent you? Down you will go Gibson. Please, don't do this to yourselves.
zealand21 1 month ago
@zealand21 Tuning is a rather useless skill on a guitar. I would rather spend more time playing than tuning. Would you ask Liberace to tune his own piano? Ridiculous.
pflau1 1 month ago
@pflau1 Doesn't mean he doesn't know how to, or that he didn't tune his own piano when he started playing, correct? "Tuning is a rather useless skill"? Really? If you are a musician, let's just say you are. When you first started playing, did you ask anyone to tune your instrument for you? Or did you at least ask for help? Or maybe, you played with an untuned instrument, which would justify your comment. Haha.
zealand21 1 month ago
@zealand21 Does Mario Andretti change his own motor oil? Really now, there are two kinds of people on stage during a concert - those that play the guitars, and those that tune them. Which ones you want to be?
pflau1 1 month ago
@pflau1 He probably does. To his personal ride that is. See, I never said anything about being on stage, you said that. I was aiming at the effect this would have on learning musicians, not veterans.

I like the innovation of this idea. The guitar 'electronics' hasn't changed over 60 years. But to my mind effects are very personal and to build those into a guitar...
I also think that the quality of the guitar itself is not that great.

@MYEYESONECONOMY gibson is not dead. This guitar was just over hyped and over exposed, then they tried to cram the world in it. Also many other not over priced guitars. They are not dead
