to the idiots worrying about application of something like this ... as the guy said , its meant as an exercise not as something to use literally in a song ... think of it like this ... football players run that tire exercise in practice ..obviously they wont run through tires in a game but the skills developed in the tire exercise greatly enhance the performance of the player in an actual game
Brother, that was sick! I was with you on the 2, 3, and most of the 5. The 7 lost me. This is not natural and should not be attempted ever again! Very well done Mike!
the five is kinda dragging between 3rd and 4th beats..... but do not think in any way i am saying its bad....lol. its good, pretty crazy. the 2,3,and 5 make a pretty cool beat. the 7 like somebody else said kinda makes it sound bad. but its still a cool thing to be able to do. props.
@mikeadiddle i know polyrhythms aren't very musical, i was just saying 2,3 and 5 all made a cool beat, when the seven was brought in it took away. but yeah polyrhythms aren't for a good sounding musical quality. mangini told us in class once that they are mainly good to make you more precise on beat, the more you practice them, the better your timing gets.
it's sort of unfair when people claim that this has no musical value ..like ozoshah said, the 3:2 part is used in music, and i bet most people can hear the groove going ..but why is that? somehow 2,3,4,6,8 feels "musical", but 5 and 7 is "too awkward"? ..and i know people will feel offended if they think it's lack of intelligence that makes their brain not "feel" the music, only the simplest 3:2 step.. (and maybe i am being unfair now, hehe, it might not have anything to do with "rhythmic IQ")
....but more than that, the polyrhythms are usable in something more intense than a simple song, and that is the MUSIC COMPOSITION. sorry for my sloppy english, best regards from italy!
congratulations man, actually the first 3 patterns are enough, cause the combination of 2,3 and 5 is a a splendid example of african and arab/african music (morocco in particular comes to my mind)... the 7 pattern breaks that conception in my opinion, but i know perfectly that your intention was a sort of mental/physical training and thats great. answering to all those kids who naively asked if those polyrhythms are usable in a song, the answer is YES. (continue...)
from "polyrhythm" page in wikipedia: " . . . the 3:2 relationship (and [its] permutations) is the foundation of most typical polyrhythmic textures found in West African musics.— Novotney (1998: 201)" ...i am pretty sure that their musicologists conceived the adding of a 5 pattern, but unfortunately i cannot give you a concrete example.
sounds musical to me, i mean it's no justin bieber (unfortunately we can't all be justin bieber), but if youre open to it it really is some beautiful shit.
@philnoll I don't agree at all. I think this sounds fantastic. This is very musical to me. I would love to have a drummer that played like this in my band. It's incredibly interesting as it informs a pre-meditated process of theory as opposed to mindless accompaniment or droning 4/4. You should check out Jaki Liebezeit from Can.
@fasolplanetarium Well, ya know...I love this stuff. That's why I was looking it up. Of course its a good exercise for independence, but then you gotta make it a groove, so not just using the straight polyrhythm, but throwing it in where it sounds good. I don't know, its present in a lot of latin drum grooves. I will check out that artist you suggested. Thanks.
That's awesome. Definitely a multidimensional approach to rhythm. I think it is VERY musical, and could be used in a song, but not a normal mainstream song with a linear beat pattern. This puts rhythm into a 3D context, and actually makes us percieve time differently. Thanks for sharing these on youtube, and don't expect some of these yahoos to understand what you're doing.
When trying to play polyrythms I hate it when you know in your head what to do but your body just won't listen, and you tell yourself everytime to watch out for the same mistake you've been making for the past hour, but even though you're ready for it, still make that mistake every time haha. Takes long to practace, but feels great when you get it
Whoa that's really crazy stuff. I'm just getting into polyrhythms and doing only basic ones likes 5:2 and 7:2. All the odd ones wreck my brain. It's gonna be a long way before I get to doing anything like this haha.
The crazy thing is it kind of relaxes your brain, after a while. It's frustrating at first, but after you start getting it, it's very meditative.
I can only equate it to the feeling in your muscles after a workout or a long sports activity. That heavy, relaxed feeling that your muscles get, you know? It sort of happens to your brain.
I find that after working on these polyrhythms for a while, I have more clarity of thought and better concentration.
@mikeadiddle I know exactly what you mean, it's awesome. Pity I'm not as amazing as you, I could never get my head around four different rhythms at once...
@mikeadiddle you would like clapping music....just type clapping music with animation to learn it.....i've gotten to the point where it's boring just playing it with my hands(i have videos of me playing it over several ostinato's) it's meant to be played by 2 people clapping....! ohh and also listen to mats and morgan band, animals as leaders, chimp spanner, mr. bungle(a bit out of place, but they are amazing, plus some songs have insane tempo transitions) and jimmy agren band
Interesting. I can't tell if you're joking around or just a dick.
Obviously, your reading comprehension is on the same level as your grasp of civility, since I clearly explained there is nothing musical about this polyrhythm and it's simply an exercise to stretch your independence.
Since you're such a knowledgeable critic on the subject, I'll anxiously await your demonstration of polyrhythms in a musical context. Or maybe jealousy explains your juvenile outburst.
Also. very impressive! I'd love to hear this worked into a more musical feel! First 3 worked alright, but you need to put accents in with the snare to make it groove better... The cymbals rally didn't work at all...
I will see if I can break video tape some instructions.
But really, the learning process progressed in a linear fashion, just like the video. I started with 2:3 on the feet, which is the simplest polyrhythm (Carol of the Bells).
Then I tried adding 5 with the left or right hand. You just have to keep working it, until it's engrained in your muscle memory.
You will get to the point where 2:3:5 is on autopilot. Then, work on adding 7. That will take a while, but you can get there!
Haha cool stuff. Nice hat. I'd like to see you do some quintuplet stuff if you get the chance to post it, I have a video of my simplest way I can do it up on here and I'm not really sure where to take it.
@mikeadiddle to play this msically its real easy kk! dont play it as a beat! use it as a fill! speed it up a little! and only maybe 1 bar or 2 bars at a time! make sense? i can do 4/5/6 and use it often! if i could rechord sound i would demonstrate for you! keep it tight guys!
Thanks, Ganesh. I'm working on some more musical applications for these, as well as a 5-way polyrhythm (3-4-5-7-11) incorporating vocal. Or maybe even a whistle. :-)
wow great!

it's a very useful excersize for internalizing polyrhythms until they become natural.
it comes in handy when trying to learn contemporary concert music by Xenakis or Cage.

this is definitely something you could use as a mind excersize. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be musical. But hey let's criticize anyway.
