In my opinion the critics do not give America the recognition they deserve because it falls into that dreaded catagory of "Mellow, easy listening 70s pop/rock". I absolutely love their stuff. When the first America song was played on the Boston AM station I usually listened to ...even at 17 years old I knew the song was going to be a big hit
@DomoniqueDB15 It definitely could have repeated the chorus again... if they'd done it a few years later it probably would have... or maybe Geo Martin decided it should be that way.
This is just so damn wonderful. How do these artists orginate such spectacular sounding and heartfelt music? This is the culmination of art, science, skill, culture, heart and inspiration. But mostly the love of making it happen by the musicians.
@dan7dees This tune was on AM radio in september of 1975 when I came home from Marine Boot Camp...THAT is what it make me think of when I hear it. Just getting to know the girl I met in high school, who, incidentally is my wife of over thirty-three years. Lot's of challenges and trials, but also moments and seasons of sublime beauty. Two great grown kiddos...Life has been good to me..
@borecleaner1 i think i was on that same marine base! i had just come back from cambodia and was in rehab to kick my opium habit. this song helped me through it and i have to thank jesus christ and daisy jane for my wonderful wife and 6 children! god bless america, not just the country, but also the band!!!!!
I interviewed these two in 1983 when they performed at the Air Force Academy. I was working in PR office at AFA then. Fun stuff. Great song. I love their music. So many memories. But I will say I love RIANNA and PIT BULL and GAGA today. I'm lucky, i've grown older but I can still enjoy today's music like I was still a teenager. Thank AMERICA for all your great songs. I know both your fathers were in the Air Force and that is how you met each other.
i was only born in the 80's but my perants bless their soles played this music while i was growing up...and i fell in love with it....neil young, america, crosby etc
I honestly did not think men think of women in the way the lyrics were written. Do they? I've not known any, How sad... Still a beautiful song. Thank you for posting.
@Kelticgirl1 Yes, a lot of us most certainly have had deep feelings for women just like in this song so you have probably been around the wrong kind of guys. Give a nice guy a chance sometime and even though they might, at least on the surface, seem as exciting as the players, it would be well worth it.
@Kelticgirl1 I have a threoy on why straight men, probably younger men, won't show they are sensitive at all even if they are. I know this isn't politically correct but since gays have pretty much been in the forefront of entertainment recently they have hijacked the sensitivity niche and some straight men might not want to appear to be sensitive because someone might think they are gay but it reality there are more sensitive and creative straight men than gay men simply because of numbers.
@kentaappel You really hit the nail on the head. Hijacked. Not just the music industry but film, theater, and T.V. I am man enough to admit that this song always makes my eyelids moist. It reminds me of a certain lady who is out of reach at the moment. Don't worry about being politically correct. Being honest is more important.
@drunkonsoda I know what you mean as I have never fell in love with another man and I don't think the vast majority of men ever do either so despite what the powerful gay lobby wants people to think, gay people, even if there really is such a thing, are not that common.
You certainly like to talk about homosexuality a lot. I don't know whether you're gay or not, but you are definitely an idiot. But you never know - maybe I'm part of the "powerful gay lobby", that is if gay people exist. Remember this: Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. You've left no doubt, fool.
@PVcat1 yeah, for a long time I was able to listen to "original recordings" of America on youtube....(not the videos of America now doing live gigs). Then one day I tried to find them again and almost all of them were gone......same thing happened with a lot of The Eagles music for a while
The era of this music is forever gone.So sad
