I love the church-like chords he plays while rolling the tone control on and off. Great effect. Actually, I always love it when he plays anything church-like; sometimes he uses a synth set to an orchestral setting while fading it in very lightly in the background. Just a beautiful effect...
What I prefer in his playing apart of course from the wonderfully melodic choice of notes is the fluidity of his bends which expand the scope of individual note selection....bringing out the great potential of the electric guitar.
I can't undestand the position he uses to playing Bb, C, Db and Eb. Obviously, I perfectly know what position it is, but I bet there's something different in the chords he does than normal chords...
i read someone say Steve Morse is lame! lame?! how could anyone say that?! listen to this! this is soooo musical, not just a bunch of old nonsense strung together. mindblowing.
i'm always utterley taken aback by the brilliance of this player. even though i think that the Steve Morse signature model at the start of the video is gorgeous, the best sounding guitar is his old battered blue one he plays at the end.
Yeah man. He is the master of manipulating the guitar just with the controls. He doesn't need no stinking pedals. Although he has his rackmount effects when he plays live.
2:17 ish sounds very Petrucci. Not that the rest doesn't. And I know Steve Morse is a huge influence on Petrucci, but it's almost note for note in one of Petrucci's riffs from some song or another.
@FarazR2 JP may have borrowed a little something from steve in that case then, cause that riff is from a deep purple song called sometimes i feel like screaming.
@19RooT88 I've been looking for that answer also. I swear I have heard that chord progression in an old Dregs tune but cannot find it. I'll keep searching ! Great stuff
I think Steve uses also a pedalboard wich simply controls his amp's channels, clean and distortion...you can see the pedalboard (looks like a MIDI pedalboard) in some video, near the one with 3 ernie ball volume pedals.
That last version of his sig guitar sounds the best to me (the one that's not fancy.) I had one like that once. It was a great guitar and I shouldn't have sold it.
@LateNightShredder Actually, no. To play clean sounds with a "wildly distorted amp setting", Steve switches to the bridge side single coil and simply turns the volume down. That's all. He explains and demonstrates it on his website. The bridge side single coil is lowered all the way into its hole for maximum distance from the strings for this reason.

Huh . . . never seen that before. Instead of getting that spacey effect for the notes by using a volume pedal, he's using his pinky to turn the volume knob up and down as he plucks the strings. Very cool.
yeah, its a cool trick but why he does it is because of the way he connects his pedals. For every pedal he uses a Ernie Ball Volume Pedal, so if he wants to do this spacey trick with a volume pedal he would basicly have to re-set-up his whole pedal rack...
Check the Steve Morse sound lesson, he really is a good teacher :P
o, and btw, on his site, he explains his rack with pictures and everything so maybe that would be helpful too.
@jelmer777 Steve does no "tricks" that count on the way he connects his pedals. He uses long and short delays along with a guitar synth controlled by 3 Ernie Ball volume pedals. That's it. Whichever one he wants to use (or combine with the others) is all that there is to it. Very simple but versatile setup. Jelmer is correct about his teaching and his website, which explains his setup in more detail.
I owe the Purple Burst version and I got to tell you, not a day goes by that I don't at least sneak a peek at it to this day as I go off to work, looking for to getting home and playing this guitar. Super super fast neck, sounds awesome and feels superb both in weight and in the playability. EB guitars tend to have a narrow feel around the 1-3 frets, so if you have a bigger hand, you may find it slightly uncomfortable. A must have. Quality is top notch.

Ummm nice guitar. 1 of the best guitar players. But why is his playing so slacky i mean his left hand looks like stevie ray vaughn if his thumb was in poisition he would of played it much better.
That way you get more attack in your playing. It'snot only fast picking thatt matters. Players who play that way, is not very interesting in the long run. Impressiv at first, then just end up beeing boring. Listen to Andy Timmons, Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, SRV and likes. They don't get great on just the fast stuff

about those 'taps': its not a tap, he's picking a note, and simultaniously, he's touching the string, 12 frets higher, to get a natural harmonic. look up some clips like 'what ted greene taught me'.
Ahh...I think you better keep that coin on one side...Steve influenced Petrucci way more than the other way around...I have been listening to Morse since 1982 and his approach was already what you hear...he has just added more vocabulary to his already gargantuan abilities.
Living proof that even the best guitarist on the planet can give a wank over some improvisation. Some stuff just genius some other from the guy... next door, but still simply the best!
put the plectrum between your thumb and middle finger. extend your second finger until its straight.. put your hand at any point on the guitar ( can be a chord or single notes doesnt matter its your choice) but for example if its at the 5th fret ( barred) you'd play at the 17th fret harmonic position. so its basically just harmonics at the 12th fret as you would on an open guitar. but you can obviously do 9th fret , 7th fret, 5th fret, 4th fret, and 2nd fret harmonics also if you want.
