You folks should check out jazz of the 20's and 30's that was actually from Shanghai. It's innovative, original, and truly fine music. Farewell Shasha by Bai Hong is here on YT and is quite nice. Zhou Xuan's Ye Shang Hai is my favorite (my video of it is currently featured in the top right corner of this page).
@Jupitroid I am quite fond of Ye Shanghai also, I even have Transcribed it for my band. But I can't really call it jazz... (I am still looking for the 1920s Chinese jazz, I know it is out there, Buck must have played it at the Casa Nova Ballroom...
Oriental fox trots, as these were known, were very popular in the 20's.
