@Savaniel it's called fear dude. They didn't knew they would crash. A better strategy would be to slow down to have more time to shoot and to shoot preciselly.
good thing ryan kept it in the city with that pussy-ass M400 queer block cause the faster you get the faster those 440 powered gran furys get & would easily out-handle & man-handle the ltd to the ditch. Back in 78 the producer thought you'd buy watching a 80+ lb trucklid lift off with a few buckshots...now that's a total joke.
At 022 we see a car pas in front of the getaway car L to R. The getaway car then swings right to reveal the street. Where does the other car go? It seems to dissapear, or have I missed something?
@racerdbo Why a remake? Enjoy this timeless original! Stunning action, excellent plot. First class acting by Ryan O'Neal and Bruce Dern, the two main characters. And yes, it is a full fledged movie.

@lovenopeace Well, you also need to remember that the police tactics in the '70's is much different than it it today. Police didn't have the training for high speed chases back then, as they do today. Back then, it was pretty much chase the perp until he crashes, or you crash.....plus, its only a movie ;)
Most possibly. They are FORD LTD for sure and are with mopas 440 or 460 engines ;). Pretty much used in many states across america as I see them a lot in old movies with police chases :).
@d0ugz24 you were lied to by this faggot know-it-all LucaTurilli89. in this chase scene they used 1974-1975 Dodge Monaco Full Sized Police Interceptors for this chase. They either had 440s or 460s in them because of their ruggedness and beefed-up suspensions. just setting the facts straight
@TouringAviation dumb fuck. I didn't said I know it all! I said "Most possibly" because they really look alike. However my answer was in caps because I pasted it. I don't know a lot about cars but I was curious too so I searched google and wanted to help. There is no need for insults here.

The police cars are actually 1974-1975 Plymouth Furys....they used a different grille from the similar Dodge Monaco. The getaway car is a 1973 Ford Galaxie 500.
The Galaxie would have had the somewhat rare 400ci Cleveland V8 or possible a 429ci "385 series" big block V8, whereas the Plymouths would have almost certainly used 440ci "RB series" V8s. The police cars, in this case, would be a bit faster than the getaway car, but they don't have the Driver himself behind the wheel. ;)
When i get off work im gonna go home take a hot shower eat a good meal then im gonna smoke a fat joint kick back and watch ''The Driver''....Haven't seen it since 2002
Sweet! :D I even did this in Midtown Madness 2, and in GTA! :D And also in Driver 1 and Parallel Lines! :D Sweet movie indeed, I have a legal dvd copy of this, far out! :D
Saw this when it came to the uk in 78.directed by the genius Walter hill.terrific pre cgi crap.the car park/pink merc seen is a classic for every petrolhead.
@bjroberts65 He's done so many stunts that when he rolled a car end over end for Blues Brothers 2000 in 1998 he ended up with brain concussion and temporarily lost his memory. This was not because he did the stunt wrong - the stunt went perfectly - but because his body couldnt take any more impacts - that's how many stunts this guy has done(!)
I love the purity of this chase. No names, no dialogue, no crazy-making 60-shots-a-minute MTV cutting. Just roaring engines, speeding metal, squealing rubber, strategy and driving skill.
@luisvizi its definately inspired by this and all other '70s car chase movies, but the bit with the orange merc in the carpark was almost exactly like the 1st mission in driver 1

It is about a man who refuses to play by anybodies rules but his own. Not societies and also not the criminal underworld. Another good film in this genre is "Charley Varrick, " also from the 70's. This is the best clip on YouTube of this movie scene. To the younger crowd viewing--this movie was made long before video games of today. Older is better!!

in my opinion i like the ending chase in the original gone in 60 seconds especially the end at the car wash but the remake sucked
