Even in France these cars were considered as pieces of shit.It was a kind of attempt to penetrate US markets with cheap cars. It's a pity that US audience sum up French car production to these things. French car industry is very old, as old as Germans, and The French manufactured the best cars in the world before WW2, like Delage, Delahaye, Talbot, Hispano Suiza, Bugatti, and many others.French cars in 2012 have nothing in common with these Alliance, Encore, or Medallions.Quality is as the top.
@asteph2607 Because Renault was near on bankrupt at this time and did not have enough money to adapted enough the models for US market. The Renault 9 and 11 were good cars in Europe and reliable but the transformation of this car for the specification for the US market made this models not reliable. In 1987 the new president of Renault decided to sell the branch AMC to Chrysler and decided to concentrate the activities in Europe and decided to built better quality cars.

That's pretty advanced for the mid 80's. But, I have a feeling that cars with that feature were probably in the shop for repairs often.
