i saw this movie for the first time recently. it was really an event. not a movie just to be made. im glad it had a happy ending because we all know the tragic and sad ending of many of the tribal peoples of this land. its amazing with all the technology we have, in spite of all the ills and trials of that time way back when, there seemed to be a hell of a lot more to civilization than there is today.
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it, for what it stood for and the lessons it tried to bestowupon us, also the sountrack isn't too shabby.
Personally, I think John Barry created the best soundtrack in film history. Each score perfectly compliments the story line without detracting from it. Its role in the film aside, all my troubles melt away when I listen to this music.
We lost the great composer John Barry yesterday. I wish he knew his beautiful Dances with Wolves score sustained me when deployed overseas, missing the birth of my youngest son. May he Rest in Peace.
I hold the Native American culture in a highest form of respect, but I've always wondered what would have occurred with we had never dominated their lands. Don't you think that, at some point, they would have cars and shoppingmalls just the same? They would adapt modern technology just like any other culture.. wouldn't you think? Just an interesting thought.
@MsYanaGirl what was done, or how it was done, the westward expansion, was wrong in a lot of ways, but you CAN'T have it both ways...enjoy modern things &.... You can be a north american Indian in 1600 or live on a reserve and make like one or do both partaking in advances of science. Modern science has learned from the Indian's about natural medicines of course. I personally think no american of mostly native am blood should pay any taxes.. and have reparations where warranted..
@MsYanaGirl- Had their lands never been invaded by Europeans or anyone else, they would undoubtedly be exactly the same today as they were 200 years ago, after all, they had remained the same for thousands of years ever since the end of the last Ice age when they crossed from Asia. They had no reason to change, they had all the food they could want and more land than they knew what to do with. They were probably the freest people the world has ever known. Hope that helps (:
@slaphaddalztick ''carmaticly'' speaking something must have been wrong in the society, so they way of life was braught to an end, we'll never know. But what you wrote sounds so good, I like it, often I feel very close to the great spirit, like I was one of them, maybe in a previous life, or I picked it up from this trouly great movie.
@dStrojdStroj Human societies have developed at varying stages around the world, some have progressed technologically faster than others, not because they are cleverer, but because they have had to due to population pressure, wars, and contact with others. The Native Americans, the Aztecs, and many native peoples around the world today, have seen their societies destroyed not by some bad Karma on their part, as you put it, but by the voracious appetite of modern industrialised societies :)
@slaphaddalztick I can't dissagree. Every empire is based on some horrible act of violence or shame, and stands on graves of inocence. I only hope there is a special circle in hell reserved for those in power then, whose ancestors (human or institutions) still rule today.
@slaphaddalztick That actually helped a lot, thank you. :) What you said is very true, now I think about it... The Native Americans really did respect life in the way it was meant to. It makes me very sad to see how that was changed to abrubtly.
we are doing the same right now but in a diferent way...open your eyes man..
we are still the same assholes who dont care for nothing but the money.. We dont care about the planet, we dont care about the animals, we dont cafe about life...
Do u need me to get into details in every single one of them or you get the idea?
@Bobby01983 What about you being racist to whites? I agree in the Indian wars white committed 99'/. Of the wrongs but saying injustice comes from whites? I am part Indian my grand mother is pure Indian, I am Irish Indian Syrian Jew Russian French and Canadian...
Movies don't make me cry normally, but the ending of this movie with the war chief atop the hill shouting down to dances with wolves telling him how he has always been his friend in front of the whole village, it moved me. Tears came streaming down my face the first time, and I still get a bit choked up today
@miles305678 i would have written purple if they were purple injustice comes from white people i know indian people all of them have dark skin and want to be white
so they sell 100 diferrent sorts of bleachingcream in india take chemical shit in order to get withe
im really sad about this racists if you say you are a white indian you betray your ancestors
it was hard for ghandi and all the others to get fee
( and now indians eat what white people shit ) monsanto&co.
@Bobby01983 if you dont approve of white culture, you dont need to tell everyone that, i agree with what you're saying but you dont think that you could be a little nicer? theres alot of people who hate or judge others by thier looks or how they dress. it all comes back to culture. one of the reasons i'm studying to be a social anthropologist, i want people to understand other cultures and not just judge them immeadiately. it's kind of like saying you hate hot dogs, when you've never had one.
A beautiful piece of music.. my favourite movie of all time.. i have my own performances of some of these soundtracks on my channel and i am working on tutorials for piano if you would like to learn how to play some of these songs please have a look. thanks
In fact the United States government has stolen “Billions of Dollars” from the Native American Trust Funds. The "Individual Indian Monies (IIM) program" holds money “IN TRUST” on behalf of "INDIVIDUAL" Native Americans. An audit of the "Individual Indians Monies" program revealed “BILLIONS” of dollars are missing or otherwise unaccounted for.
The government holds Native American “LANDS IN TRUST” and collects royalties from “RESOURCES” on Native American lands which the United States also “HOLDS IN TRUST”. Native Americans DO NOT GET ANYTHING FREE. Native Americans pay for ALL their own programs and services from the money 'HELD IN TRUST" by the United States government.
Native Americans don't get reparations. Native Americans have "TREATIES". The treaties define the “PAYMENT” for acquiring lands by the United States. “MONETARY SETTLEMENTS” were made, and that money is “HELD IN TRUST” by the United States government.
Chainsawbattleaxe the Natives were far off better till the WHITES started colonizing the Americas. I don't think starting two world wars and failing at them while creating nuclear and hydrogen bombs didn't do any of the slightest good. The truth is if you had just left the indians alone you may of learned something intelligent from a much wiser people than relying on advanced technology to solve your problems.
@TomahawkNRifle Yeah. Your problems are SO solved aren't they. You people sit out on your reservations, collecting your government dole, drinking your whiskey and eating candy bars and even with all this tax payer gratis you haven't accomplished a thing in 100 years. Money pouring in every month and you can't even fix up your hovels. White religious groups have to come in and do repair work and give you pep talks because you are "broken spirited" and "depressed". My! How wise is this! Amazing!
@chainsawbattleaxe if our government had never interfered with their lands or ideas, we couldve easily bargained with them and had similar results. instead, we threw treaties at them, which most couldnt even understand, we created "reservations" for them, and took their land. it's basically what hitler did to the jews during the holocaust, except we dont kill the indians or put them to work. if you're gonna make conclusions about someone or something, at least know what you're talking about

KingVerac, maybe a lot of white protested but it wasn't the majority. The majority of the whites voted for the expansion westward and bringing Native Americans into a more civilized manner as they called it. Read "Geronimo: His Own Story: The Autobiography of a Great Patriot Warrior." This man literally went through hell his whole life, he fought his whole life for his family, and his people. Only to be back stabbed and be separated from his family and left to rot in a POW camp.
@TomahawkNRifle You "Native Americans" are laughable in your insinuations that most of your problems are linked to the white people. You would like to have the world believe that you weren't raping, pillaging, and murdering each other long before the white race ever got here. The truth of the matter is if the whites had not come you would still be throwing sticks and rocks at buffaloes instead of making billions off your casinos and collecting your check every month just for being an Indian.
The whites will be dealt with, give it time and let nature takes it's course. What they have done throughout history is horrendous and will not go unpunished. The oppressions, enslavement, the murders. They are an abomination to this world, who are more alien than any other race on this planet. These are harsh statements but take a look through history, and not just 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th century history but take a look further back if you are so curious.
I do cry what happened to the people today. Grandmother taught me how it would be, I never listened... I was disrespectful to her and didn't care. Until I will not know her wisdom she gave to me... now I'm at fault of not knowing... forgive me...
Verac, it's complicated. Blame the blood of one of the first born on Earth too. Might as well. When we meet our maker what will be will be. This soundtrack is wonderful though. Steal the moments of comfort.
This is definitely one of my favorite movies scores! The beautiful melodies and rich, deep and textured orchestral palette draws the audience into the film. John Barry is a unique and very talented composer and his creativity has enhanced my life. I know there are others who feel the same...
Kill kill kill the white man and every one that looks like them. From my heart I truly believe this. Take back what is ours before they destroy it all.
If you've never been to the great plains you really should. It is unbelievably beautiful and so large and sparsley populated. Even today, there is so much land. Studying the Battle of the Little Bighorn as a kid I always felt bad for Custer, until I drove there on a trip and saw the area and the battlefield. Now I feel he got exactly what he deserved.
@flev82 Don't blame future generations and races bro, alot of american's protested against the acts toward the native americans. Blame the politicians during the 18th and 19th centuries, not us now. They are the ones who will be judged in heaven. We CAN'T Change the past, we can only move from here, let us all walk forward in peace.
@KingVerac finally! someone who knows thier history. the politicians were hasty to move their dreams of cities out west, thus destroying the indian cultures who inhabitied those lands. if you think about it, there was never really a public vote on the issue. today, it would be a proposal on a bill or something when voting time came around. back in the day, whatever the govt thought was a good idea, was a good idea.
Guys are you serious right now? Just shut the hell up and enjoy this beautiful music. Who cares about what happened the Native Americans should be remember by this tune. This song is meant not to care about the tragedies, but the untarnished years of the unsettled west.
@bint86 I am a composer and I'm sorry to down your opinion but that is not true. There is one swift mood throughout the whole song, which is supposed to give the feeling of traveling back to the days of the "Unsettled West" thus quoted from the back of the movie script itself. This song is meant to be a mixture of what you just mentioned.
I love this song and movie. It was wrong what we did and mistakes should not beadvocated but none is perfect. I believe in our country and those that proect her and serve the greater good.
The U.S. Government made a lot of promises to the Native Americans and broke them all except one--which was: "We WILL take your land". Lesson learned--DON'T trust the U.S. Government!!!
@nickhare1 If you want to use the argument that it won more oscars and therefore is the better movie, Titanic, Ben Hur, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King would be the best movies of all time; they all won 11 oscars.
Of course, although The Shawshank Redemption is the greatest movie of all time, Ben Hur is a close second.
Civilisation is a human trait, it will never go away, it will always come back, their way of life and ours just didnt mix. And when this planet and its sun fades away civilisation will carry us to a new world, to a far and distant planet. If they are primitive we may whipe them out too just like the indians, humans and its civilasation will survive forever...hopefully, however the idians lived in perfect balanse with nature, the ideal situation is to be both spiritually and technically advanced.
The music is great, the film was fine. I enjoyed watching and listening. BTW, the composer is English and did a lot of James Bond films. Started out playing rock music, then switched to this genre.
Our technology today has produced an outstanding story and movie that could be replicated in Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America. We are privileged to have the means by which to learn today in creating tomorrow.
A truely GREAT movie which demonstrates the conquest of all human beings of the time. Their struggles and battles to survive and to advance their technology over another. It is not only American history but the history of our civilisations around the planet. We look back today and ponder over what once was, as will generations in the future look upon us.
while I agree with what is being said here, the fact of the past, i,e, barbaric peoples, was to concuer lands and people. ALL peoples did this. and luckily we have mostly learned that this was wrong. but that being said, the past is the past, you can condem the entire world for what was done in the past, it won't change a thing, we need to move past apologies and work toward peace thruout the world, no one is alive to apologise.. are the children accountable for what the parents did????
Agree with you. No use crying over spilt milk, for what people did over one hundred or more years ago. We cannot change that. No use laying guilt trip on ourselves for what some forefathers did. Let's move on and do the best we can. On another note, interesting how these political/historical digressions seem to occur on YouTube, often ending up on tangents that may or may not pertain to the precise video shown..........
This movie was 4 stars just for music score and cinematography alone. I have seen it 20 times, listened to the soundtrack hundreds of times but that first time in the movie theatre on the big screen was amazing!
agree completely. It is a film that I MUST watch if I am flipping channels. The scenario could be "heading to a job interview that may double my salary, but as I am dressing I am flipping channels and see DWW": I'd give up that interview to stay and watch the movies. and that doesn't even COMPARE to when I saw it the first time. Imagine it on IMAX.
jerdeb4ever ???? Cannont judge past times in context of modern ? Were not talking about modern times. Were talking about reality of the past that resulted in what we see today. The White European American stole everything that was the American indians Whether you agree or not they had no right to take this land nor put the native amerian Indians on reservations. In the US we are taught that Columbus discovered America..EXCUSE ME ? The American Indian was already here. They took it from them
I agree with all you say, the Europeans stole a land that was not there's. I am a European and often I feel shame for what my country has done to peoples around the world. No one has any right to walk into someone else's country and take it for their own. The American Indian was in the US for thousands of years before the White Man walked in and took over. The American Indian lived in harmony with the land. He never sought to change it but lived in peace with it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
We came and we conquered. That's what it means to be white. We can destroy any enemy. Take any woman. And invent or adapt any technology. No sense in complaining about the way of life. I'm rather proud that my forefathers took over the world.
Yeah...I agree with u 100%...cuz Im a Greek guy and my country has been conquered so many times...the only time we ever conquered was with Alexander the Great...

In my opinion Columbus discovered America for the Spaniards and Italians I think...cuz they say that the Vikings had gone to America many hundred years b4 Columbus did....
One of the most inspiring movies of all time ! And it exposed the hypocrisy the the early American goverment. The USA still really belongs to the native American Indians. How they have been treated and put on reservations in absolutly apalling. Nothing can excuse how they were mistreated.
The movie was well done and the music is amazing..
I agree with hadenusc completely! What white men did to the Indians was horrific! I have a newspaper clipping showing an Indian with a sign "Deport Illegal Immigrants". This picture is worth a thousand words...
Τhat was a nice pun...lol...it kinda reminded me of one line in Rocky VI where Paulie enters Rocky's restaurant and one waitress asks him...do u have a reservation? And he goes...Do I like look like a frigging indian? Anyway I agree with u too that we treated bady Indian people during colonization...
When I listen to this song...the word majestic comes to my mind...I agree with u in everything u say...and Im a 32 year old Greek guy from Athens btw...
Unfortunately you are one of those foul mouthed idiots that plaugue the internet with the sort of comments you make. you think that you are 'great' - but regrettably you are to be pitied
I agree but you cannot change the past nor judge the past actions in the context of modern times. Rather, you cannot because the math will not add up. So be human feel the heart wrenching grief that cries out across all of History and vow to do your best to see such injustice never occurs again. For it is only for good men to do nothing for evil to prosper. To know what is right yet stand by and let wrongs occur is want of courage..
@hadenusc I agree,,the stigma is attepted to be shadowed by the major wars,,,but,to me,it was one of the most barbaric events in recent history.,,not just because i have some cherokee in me,,but,i am proud of that most of all.
@hadenusc i think the natives should get back their land, they lived in harmony with nature! i respect them so much and i wish i could learn from them. they are born in nature, they live with nature and they die in nature. nothing seems more beautiful then that.
@hadenusc Its not that black/white. In June 1756 my sixth-great grandmother Jane Innis her parents her brother Nathaniel and her little sister Mary were kidnapped by natives. The children were separated from the parents. In Dec. Mary was killed by being put under ice by her captors. The parents were freed about 1758, but it was 1764 before Jane and Nathaniel were reunited with them. Another grandmother, Hannah, was widowed and had all the family cattle stolen by Natives.
One of the best soundtracks, really very emotional..perfectly coresponding with the main theme of the movie. Mr. Barry was great composer..xxx

Bobby01983 1 year ago
@Bobby01983 if you dont approve of white culture, you dont need to tell everyone that, i agree with what you're saying but you dont think that you could be a little nicer? theres alot of people who hate or judge others by thier looks or how they dress. it all comes back to culture. one of the reasons i'm studying to be a social anthropologist, i want people to understand other cultures and not just judge them immeadiately. it's kind of like saying you hate hot dogs, when you've never had one.

TomahawkNRifle 1 year ago
The government holds Native American “LANDS IN TRUST” and collects royalties from “RESOURCES” on Native American lands which the United States also “HOLDS IN TRUST”. Native Americans DO NOT GET ANYTHING FREE. Native Americans pay for ALL their own programs and services from the money 'HELD IN TRUST" by the United States government.
TomahawkNRifle 1 year ago

TomahawkNRifle 1 year ago

TomahawkNRifle 1 year ago
@TomahawkNRifle You "Native Americans" are laughable in your insinuations that most of your problems are linked to the white people. You would like to have the world believe that you weren't raping, pillaging, and murdering each other long before the white race ever got here. The truth of the matter is if the whites had not come you would still be throwing sticks and rocks at buffaloes instead of making billions off your casinos and collecting your check every month just for being an Indian.
chainsawbattleaxe 1 year ago
The whites will be dealt with, give it time and let nature takes it's course. What they have done throughout history is horrendous and will not go unpunished. The oppressions, enslavement, the murders. They are an abomination to this world, who are more alien than any other race on this planet. These are harsh statements but take a look through history, and not just 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th century history but take a look further back if you are so curious.

If they are primitive we may whipe them out too just like the indians, humans and its civilasation will survive forever...hopefully, however the idians lived in perfect balanse with nature, the ideal situation is to be both spiritually and technically advanced.

while I agree with what is being said here, the fact of the past, i,e, barbaric peoples, was to concuer lands and people. ALL peoples did this. and luckily we have mostly learned that this was wrong. but that being said, the past is the past, you can condem the entire world for what was done in the past, it won't change a thing, we need to move past apologies and work toward peace thruout the world, no one is alive to apologise.. are the children accountable for what the parents did????
mikerad65 2 years ago
Agree with you. No use crying over spilt milk, for what people did over one hundred or more years ago. We cannot change that. No use laying guilt trip on ourselves for what some forefathers did. Let's move on and do the best we can. On another note, interesting how these political/historical digressions seem to occur on YouTube, often ending up on tangents that may or may not pertain to the precise video shown..........

agree completely.

They took it from them
CloudKiller91 2 years ago
I agree with all you say, the Europeans stole a land that was not there's. I am a European and often I feel shame for what my country has done to peoples around the world. No one has any right to walk into someone else's country and take it for their own. The American Indian was in the US for thousands of years before the White Man walked in and took over. The American Indian lived in harmony with the land. He never sought to change it but lived in peace with it.

You forget that the Indians were fighting over the lands before and after the Whites came here.
Did the Sioux not take The Black Hills from a tribe who had a prior claim?
Did the stronger tribes not push the weaker ones off their own
lands?
The Whites were wrong and no mistake. But the Indians can
shoulder their own share of the blame as well.
Remember. Two wrongs don't make a right.

So be human feel the heart wrenching grief that cries out across all of History and vow to do your best to see such injustice never occurs again. For it is only for good men to do nothing for evil to prosper. To know what is right yet stand by and let wrongs occur is want of courage..
