they must of encountered the huge bugs at the start of the film and book. but they never knew they were hostile until they attacked beunas aries, as far as i'm aware. for example the book mentioned skinnies before the cartoons

It is one of the base inspirations for many works among them Aliens, Warhammer, Starcraft (which was also inspired by Aliens) and Halo.

Thats one of the reasons that Space marines and dropships all look alike
