  • "People told me." is absolutely hilarious. I have no idea why, it has no reason to be especially funny, but I die everytime I hear McKellen say it.

  • this, my friends, is brittish comedy showing how it's donne.

  • I wonder how many takes they had to do to finish this scene. I would have laughed so much if I was either one of them!

  • I love how he boasts "Sir" in Ian. It was not enough to say Ian, but Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian

  • This is awesome!! I love how the stars who feature in Extras can just take the piss out of themselves so well, and so keenly!!

I love the David Bowie one as well!!

  • Freaking Brilliant!

  • YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!! ha ha that was the best part.

  • One of the greatest scenes of this show...Simply perfect!

  • @Mintpatient You must not have a sense of humor...or an actor...or a sense of humor...lol

  • sublime acting from both actors!

  • I just met him after watching Waiting For Godot at the Sydney Opera House. It was an experience to remember!

  • love that he refers to himself as "Sir Ian"!

  • Omg! So funny! :-D

  • Words of the wise.

  • Great acting tips! Just pretend, the words are already written down for you and people tell you where to stand! Piece of cake.

  • Every actor chosen in Extras was the perfect choice. My all time favorite has to be Ross Kemp, every time I hear "Super Army Soldiers" I piss myself laughing XD

  • Oh man Gervais is pure genius. The way he combines slapstick comedy with improvised awkward moments is just wow

  • hes quite the teacher

  • so good, great, amazing.. so funny.. :)

  • You shall not pass!

  • ... ACTING!

  • jesus fucking christ only the British can achieve this level of hilarity with a straight face

  • cannot believe how hard i lost it when i saw this on extras. should see the interview with Mckellen about this

  • The paradox here is that Sir Ian is completely ridiculing the craft of acting, yet doing so in a brilliantly skilled manner - one that is far beyond the capacity of all but a handful of the world's most gifted actors. I could watch this a million times.

  • @RSVPBlogger Well, my mind is blown,

  • ahh i could listen to that man all day his voice is so relaxing haha love it.

amazing scene btw absolute genius :')

  • @aidencurl - Would've been funnier if he had somehow made a segue from Gandalf to Arther Denker / Eric Dusander from Apt Pupil. "Boy, you play viss fye-yuh!" Shaddap and march! *starts doing goose step in place*

  • I love how you see him wipe away a tear from his eye at the end.

  • Comment removed

  • Seriously, I can never watch Lord of the Rings with a straight face again. NOT EVER.

  • Sir Ian Sir Ian Wizard. YOU SHALL NOT PASS Sir Ian Sir Ian Sir Ian

He's amazing. Even when he's not in costume as Gandalf. I still believed it :)

  • Holy crap, i never knew he was gay! Not that anythings wrong with that, I think he's still fucking awesome!

  • @Killerclownmeat Maybe he's just acting? ;-)

  • @dabble778

Damn, he would be that awesome wouldn't he

  • What an absolutely marvellous scene! Made even better (for me) by the fact that he constantly refers to himself as "sir". (I do know he has the title, but I don't imagine he uses it quite so much in everyday life)

  • "There will be no scripts on the night" haha gervaius you genius......

  • I SAW IAN MCKELLEN IN 'WAITING FOR GODOT' TODAY IN PERTH :D, HE'S AMAZING!!!

    lol

  • What a wonderful actor he is...

  • @constantine2100 lol, you know McKellen is gay too, right?

  • @constantine2100 lol Sir Ian is also gay, bro XD

  • Lmao

  • How the fuck did 56 people click "dislike" for this? Where do these people come from? This vid is the best.

  • @dancarlson82

Probably because of all the gay fans who are only here to popularize a homosexual.

I assume you are one of these.

  • @Grungadin Some people just like good comedy. What does being gay have to do with it. Popularize? Some people are gay, some people are not, who cares?!

  • @earthlingdave Agreed dude

  • lol i loved the look on Ricky Gervais's face, whn Sir Ian said

"You are aware that i am not really a wizard"

I love u Sir Ian, oh yes i do

  • A Goddamn Masterclass.

  • You are aware that i am not really a wizard?! Ha ha ha,funny shit

  • this man is the best! THE BEST! Sir Ian- you sir, are the BEST!

  • Not an Extras fan but my god Mckellen is awesome in this! I mean, he always is, but I didn't know he was quite as up for taking the piss out of himself as he does here. Brilliant!

  • "And then I said to myself 'mmmm, how would I do that.'"

"How did I know what to say? *whispers* The words were written for me in a script. How did I know where to stand? ...People told me."

  • You're confused.

  • "You are not really John."

  • "How do I act so well?"

  • the way he kept referring to himself as SIr Ian tickled me haha

  • And that goes for all of you- there will be no scripts on the night!

  • "You are aware that I am not really a wizard...."

  • lolz!

  • There will be no scripts on the night!!

  • This is hilarious on two levels.

1 - his delivery is really funny

2 - he's completely right. this is what acting really boils down to. It's so simple!

    :)

  • I laughed out loud on this one :P

  • Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian -ACTION- Wizard! You shall not pass!!!! -CUT- Sir Ian, Sir Ian, Sir Ian.

  • "And that goes for EVERYBODY! There-will-be-no-scripts-on-the-night!"

  • Sir Ian Mckellan you are a God. Pure Brilliance. And Ricky you and Stephan Merchant are Gods as Writers! :-) Comic Masterminds this one always gets a laugh

  • @Thattotally No this is the series Extras.

  • This is excellent! Is this the show "The Office" that everybody talks about? Hilarious stuff.

  • Commanding presence, magnetic, BRILLIANT in lotr.............

  • his voice makes me feel sleepy

  • Sir, Ian. Sir, Ian. Sir, Ian. - Action - WIZARD YOU SHALL NOT PASS! - Cut! - Sir, Ian. Sir, Ian. Sir, Ian.

  • @Exeron91 how did gervais get so many famous wonderful actors to send themselves and their profession and often their sexuality up ? what a genius he is as a producer as well as writer and director

  • I love Ian McKellen so much.

  • boring

  • is he the actor playing dumbledor on harry potter movies?

  • @suiamanda Gambon is the one playing Dumbledore... I think Gervais is Magneto in X-men.... not sure though. He looks like Magneto.

  • @myreenmr13 Wait... Gervais is the dude in every episode of Extras.. the guest here is Ian McKellen... Magneto

  • @myreenmr13 Yea he is magneto...

  • Leave it to the British to make some decent comedy! You could certainly teach my country a lot... Regards, Norway.

  • @MankoLKR - really?

  • HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA SWEET BABY JESUS!!!!!!!!! omigod i love ian mckellan to the moon and back!!!!

  • wizard you shall not passssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It just does NOT get better than this. Think they kept cracking up during filming and had to keep re-shooting? I wouldn't be able to get through it...

    LOL

  • I shamelessly ripped this scene off once or twice when I was playing Shakespeare at the Renaissance fair.

  • SO BRILLIANT!

  • "yes I'm aware of that'

  • Wow, blew my mind. That is acting.

  • i put this part as ringtone !! lol

  • I love how he carefully whispers "the words were written down for me in a script" as if it's some huge secret to his success!

  • @MarxistKnight And it's almost as if he doesn't want to let on, just in case someone catches on to how he's been pulling it off all this time.

  • absolute gold!

  • and then i said to myself...

    MMMMM...

  • "and that is acting"

    lol, he gets emotional

  • translation:

I am being totally condescending to Ricky Gervais and all the other people involved with Extras with the enthusiasm of a prepubescent child! Exclamation mark!

  • hmmm and what comedy has come out of Argentina...ever?

  • How do I act so well? What I do is I pretend to be the person I am portraying in the play or film.

    Lol

  • 0:44 I love how they both squint at each other, awesome.

  • @Mtmelendez

    so awesome

  • This is just brilliant!

  • Sir Ian needs to narrate some books or something- I love his voice. It's so much better than Morgan Freeman.

  • I once heard an audio book of The Odyssey narrated by Sir Ian...ahh it was nice...very soothing. though I don't want to say it's better than Morgan Freeman's - his is pretty awesome too. oh and Alan Rickman...the list goes on...

  • Sir Ian, Sir Ian,Sir Ian, Action! WIZARD YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!, Sir Ian, Sir Ian.

    This made my day :P

  • sir ian... sir ian... sir ian... YOU SHALL NOT PASS!... sir ian ... sir ian...sir ian lol

  • "And that goes for everybody - THERE WILL BE NO SCRIPTS ON THE NIGHT."

    Lol XD

  • what show is this?

  • Extras (uk)

  • he reminds me of frank costanza from Seinfeld. I wish they would have done something like this with De Niro, allowing him to make fun of his method techniques, or maybe they could have gotten Day Lewis or Bale.

  • You shall not pass!

  • amazing regardless

  • Brilliant...through and through. Perfection.

  • i could listen to sir ian allll fuckin day. his voice just makes me confortable haha

  • @6dawg he is the white morgan freemon

  • @6dawg Haha, I know what you mean. David Attenborough does the same to me.

  • Sir, Ian Mckellan (spelling wrong probably)

    Rocks!

  • I would love to see an Extras episode with both Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen, but instead of assuming their X-Men roles as if they existed in the comic world, they played humans in an otherwise real world but still had their powers. I'm referring of course to the Extras episode with Stewart in it where he imagines a movie of himself as a Professor X like character, but only uses his powers to cause women's clothing to fall off.

  • The DVD blooper reel is as funny, maybe even more so than the actual episodes. I cry I laugh so much at Ricky constantly laughing.

  • This must have taken quite a few shots, to not laugh at that the first time, or even the fifth time would be impossible!

  • hilarious

  • Oh man, Sir Ian nailed this scene.

  • completely!

  • lol THERE WILL BE NO SCRIPTS ON THE NIGHT!! YOU WILL LEARN THE WORDS!

  • Ian McKellen is awesome in anything he does.Drama comedy etc.Propably th best actor of our age.

  • I wonder how many takes this took, because it looks like its all 1 scene, especially because if they laughed

  • @CHIP08081993 well, you can tell it's different shots because it cuts away to different angels. love this clip though.

  • No, they use more than 1 camera LOL, they dont just use 1 camera, thats crazy, you wouldn't get anything done

  • @CHIP08081993 You can get quite a lot done with just one camera actually! I'm in college right now for film production and we usually use one camera. but maybe they did use another camera. but i doubt they were running at the same time.

  • I think they were running several cameras at the same time they were just shooting from different angles later on they pasted it all to see how it looks

  • To be fair, Scrubs is filmed with one camera per scene =P They don't use the multi-camera style found on most sitcoms (as shown and mocked on the 'My Life in Four Cameras' episode).

  • You can tell it isn't 1 camera as it changes around and whenever it does theyre in the exact same position it left off

  • @CHIP08081993 I know this isn't one camera man =P I'm just saying Scrubs uses a single camera for the majority of their scenes, in an attempt to seperate the show from the majority of sitcoms.

  • @CHIP08081993 thats not how it works.

  • bloody brilliant

  • @GodIsAPigFaggot right on man, where would you be without wikipedia to help you out, that's right, still a miserable moron looking for attention.

  • 02:10 does Ricky hold back a laugh?

  • Check out the DVD, they were 'corpsing' like crazy filming this scene.

  • Love the way he says Script

  • All the celebrity cameos in this show were amazing, way better then any of their actual roles.

  • I LOOOOOVE Sir Ian sooooo much. He is the epitome of awesome. And I love Ricky cause he's brilliant! (and Canadian hehe)

  • ? He was born and raised in England.

  • Love Gervais' face throughout that, it just made it all a bit more convincing, and funny.

  • Wizard, you shall not pass!
