dont worry don there is a happy comprimise of hand drawn animation and animation done on the computer. its called a graphics tablet. you that you can hand draw the pictures straight on the the monitor and not waste paper
I love Don Bluth!! You're so right about caricaturing reality. A lot of people don't get it. Like why would I want to spend hours and hours to copy every detail?
hi again don its me BLAKE A. ROTEN and I just subscribed you for the 1st time and I don,t exactly know how to upload my own videos on youtube but I do know how to send pictures of my art on gmail if you like to meet me there. so uh see you on gmail!
you,re right don! and without hand-drawn animation than maybe 2D and 3D animation would never be in balance or maybe CGI would never exist without 2D inspiration at all which is why I would like to make disneys first anime one day even if I do best at comic strips and story boarding even though people draw at hand-drawn story boards these days which is why I would like to meet you in person or maybe online one day or my name isn,t BLAKE A. ROTEN! so uh email me at gmail if you like too?
you,re right don! and I agree that without hand-drawn animation some films and most likely storyboards these days than 2D and 3D would never be in balance or maybe 3D animation would never exist at all if thats what you had in mind and I too wish to make disneys first anime one day even if that doing best at storyboarding right?!
dear don bluth are you really going to on a dragon,s lair movie at all? cause I would love to see that on the big screen one day! and sometimes I wish disney can make there first real disney anime for the first time like they did with there first amazing manga adaption of kingdom hearts you know what I mean?
He's right, it's the stress on the realism that's killing the point of what film animation should be. Now I'm not against it, but CGI can be great when it's used for Live-action film special effects but it shouldn't entirely substitue tradtional animation.
I'm working alongside my brother and a few others. We have high hopes to restore the traditional 2-D animation medium in the near future and we won't rest until we know we've won the battle!
Thanks for the upload, and your thoughts on this topic, I doubt very seriously that cell animation well be abonaded, but even if it is, there are skill people that can simply pick up a piece of paper and create something, instead of having to get a program that costs 100's of dollars, that imo, will be the reason why cell animation will never die out, because it can be created much easier than with cgi... but that's me
@Jshaw71 it's the other way around. cgi is much easier once you know its programmes. Programmers already put in the codes for you, and you don't need to recreate every frame, or you don't need time expensive builds of animatronics and analog stuff. Too bad though. Certain 'moods' are ruined by the cgi realism, and the art of design and stylization to set up a mood get lost. However some cgi artists are working hard getting the 'oomph', handdrawn is still the ultimate core and will be forever.
3D became popular because it was different and new. In a while classic animation will become popular again because of the same reason. Generations change and get bored of things that are already popular.
My problem with traditional animation, even though I prefer it and it's the best way to make cartoon films, is that no one can do it today without being called a Disney rip-off. If one company makes a traditionally hand drawn animated film, everyone will look at it and say it's ripping off Disney. That's why many people overlooked Anastasia as a Disney rip-off, even though it has nothing to do with the Disney style. I think it will live on, but only Disney will be "allowed" to do it. Shame.
@VGRetro i feel the exact same way. and this is completely. well almost offtopic but don bluth did work for disney for a bit before mgm. i saw his name in the many adv. of winnie the pooh credits
The great thing about hand-drawn animation is you can get away with things that are limited to reality, like physics and motion, but at the same time the quality has to be good enough to be believable. So there's this constant balance the artist needs to struggle with.
I hope traditional animation doesn’t die out I love that medium of animation and it inspires me with my projects. You’re caricature version of that pose is a lot more fluid then the poster that pose in the poster look too stiff.
Don has said exactly what I think about animation... wish I could go to the seminair... Unfortunately I live so far away and don´t have enough drawing skills and a personal style. Someday^^
I think cel animation could do a lot of things that 3d animation couldn't. Take Akira for instance; Akira has this real dark, moody atmosphere because the way a lot of the imagery was shaded. 3d animation could easily reproduce this using various lighting and shader effects, but when an artist can put such meticulous detail in the drawn imagery he produces, 3d never reproduce the atmosphere or mood the same way.
I think I'll go out and people watch with my sketchbook now. In college, it was all about copying it perfectly. I never thought about exaggerating things. That's why all my characters are so stiff.
I doubt that cell animation will go away... They said that 3D was the future over ten years ago, yet people are still watching cell animated shows on TV. There's still a market for cell animation.
@trollheimer Now I can tell why some folks tend to be extremely paranoid about others being damned to Hell in their afterlives after noticing some work being done with too much sloth and not enough diligence.
@philiptwood That and CGI is getting old pretty quickly, mostly because of the live-action movies with poorly conceived scripts and even worse CGI characters.

Great vid. This helps me understand why my drawings usually turn out lifeless. A great struggle, let me tell you. Inspiring video, yes :).

CGI animation is a wonderful medium for animation, but so is traditional animation. We should have equal amounts of each!

@KTSamurai I don't think this channel is run by Mr.Bluth himself. But they're probably low quality because it's from a live streamed broadcast.
