  • I played this etude perfectly, then I woke up.

  • This is the only Chopin Etude I can play....OMG I'm jealous...

  • you know what's annoying? her playing this so flawlessly and even smiling quirkly during the performance. I am currently practicing this piece and can barely play it at 2/3 of this speed. Valentina, how can you play this well??? Especially without having your wrist hurt after all those right hand arpeggios...

PS: To all the haters: from this video it appears she plays ALL op. 10 Etudes in a consecutive fashion, non-stop (!!). Don't know too many pianists that can do that, this well.

  • Can anybody read the name of the instrument she is playing on? I wonder, if the clarity of her play is due not only to her excellence, but also to some part to the instrument.

  • @VikingFfm Bosendorfer. She's always playing on these Imperials. They're amazing pianos, the most expensive in the world - I'd take one over a Steinway any day.

  • 26 n'aiment pas? c'est pourtant parfait

  • Admirable

  • Bla Bla

  • what is wrong whit you?.. everybody here is free to comment what they want.. i haven't said she's an awful pianist, i said she's a extraordinary performer, but I fell she's not fulfilling the emotions.. anyway you're nobody to shut me up, or insult me.. but of course, your brain can't manage another type of behavior.. have a good day and don't bother in reply you ignorant (in case you don't know that means "lack of knowledge", so it's not an insult. Go learn some manners)

  • @cabipiano91 I was going to say look at the emotion in the performance. But because you can't stop me, I will; look at the emotion in the performance. Also, there's something wrong here. You just insulted us by calling us ignorant, and then said it wasn't an insult. What drug are you on? I want some. And ignorant doesn't always mean 'lack of knowledge', in this sense, it means 'lack of realisation to a truth'. Ah, internet arguments. They're the best when you're right. Buh-bai for now.

  • @Ariavariata95 in case u haven't read.. i wasn't calling everybody ignorant, just some guy that start with some low vocabulary, i don't know, guess he/she didn't have another way to communicate, anyways, youtube videos are supposed to be free to comment, i haven't said anything bad about her, she's great, just didn't like her in Chopin, why ppl take another person words before starting a figth?.. chill!

  • This piece takes virtuosic effort to play but that is only the start of making music out of it! Alfred Cortot , the foremost interpreter here, shows what happens when you make real art out of it. I found this impressive but raw and in need of a period of ripening musical understanding.Would like to hear this gifted pianist again in 10 years!

  • The last four chords are written in forte/fortissimo, but I think it makes much more sense, after the long, agitated runs mere seconds ago, to play the chords as a quiet drops of water, complimenting the sunshine, rather than exclaimed finales. Horowitz, in my opinion, does this the best...

Also the runs in the right hand from 1:51 to 1:57 should, I think, be even more dry and light; clear but insignificant at the same time... Here too I think Horowitz trumps this otherwise excellent recording.

  • this is my dreyfoos audition. i cant play it as fast as she can but, i'm going to try my best.

  • Dear Valentina,

Which edition do you use to practice these etudes?

  • just notes.. no emotion..

  • @cabipiano91 WHAT? there's plenty

  • @cabipiano91 thre's an incredible virtuosisim but -at least for me- there's no sound of chopin.. listen to the old school pianists..

  • @museandmuse obviously you are an uneducated person, i just made a comment. Too bad one never knows when you are going to find one pretty ignorant person. And still think she sounds like the Finale program..

  • @cabipiano91 When you can (someday) probably never play like here come back here and shit out your comments your worthless cunt. Close your fucking eyes and listen to the music you tool

  • @cabipiano91 the only uneducated person seems to be you for making such a ignorant comment

  • @cabipiano91 you must be lang lang.

  • This one was challenging to learn. Fun to play. I wish I still remembered how to play this : (

  • This is a very hard exercise for her fingers but this is realy not what Chopin means to play. It's the so hatet Asian-Style: to play like a machine!

  • @broadwood1830 What are you talking about? She's plenty expressive! And this is at the correct tempo as well. Also, there's no reason to hate on Asians just because there are many of them with impressive technical ability on the piano...

  • @thisguyheisaguy Asian players are mostly good technicans, but what Chopin needs is impression and the knowing of old european pianistic virtue. Valentina sound origninally like our midi if finale plays chopin.

This is why everybody laughs about Lang-Lang and others .... For knowing what we mean, please listen to Pugno, Risler, Alfred Cortot, Emil von Sauer, Moritz Rosenthal, Raoul Koczalski, Francis Planté, Valdimir de Pachman and so on..... They all are able to play Chopin in a livley kind.

  • @broadwood1830 thats pretty sweeping too.. im an asian and im not impressed by Lang Lang but that doesn't mean Asians can't play Chopin's music the way Chopin would. Please, don't judge people. It's musicality that matters, not whether you're European or anything.

  • SOUNDS like the RUNESCAPE song

  • @SingaporeA300 Do you mean it's catchy stuck-in-your-headness? XD

  • 我讓我女兒看了你的影片,鼓勵她,美女也可以把琴彈得很好!!

    謝謝妳!

  • This piece reminds me so much of my own personality. Thank you valentina, your perfection made me listen to it over and over again. I RAPED THE LIKE BUTTON .

  • Wouldn't mind hearing a bit more of the melody on the left hand, but very technically polished.

  • @andyng85 I couldn't agree more !

  • Val plays this like she's picking dandelions. Damn she's good.

  • I love her treble in this piece. She plays it perfectly!

  • her LH needs more melody... and i kinda think that a lot of it is forced. but there's no way i could play it that fluidly especially in the RH so i still think its pretty good.

  • I quit.

  • This 1:57 - 2:13 makes me fly over the moon.

  • Better than Freddie Kemp. Horowitz still has the best version of this etude. She has great hands, very fluid.

  • damn!!!!!

  • I love how this isn't a "VEVO" channel; she actually is amazing enough to post these amazing videos herself.

  • Valentina, you are just ...

    AMAZING!!!!

  • A great etude for the 2nd scherzo

  • Amazing playing!

  • She makes that look easy.

  • I love her

  • Love that arpeggio at 2:06

  • Oh my goodness those last 4 arpeggios are played astonishingly! My favorite part of the performance :P

  • If I practiced this long and hard for a few years, I could probably play a few lines of this at about 1/100 of the speed. Maybe.

    Beautiful :DD

  • @MsThisNameIsTaken Don't let that stop you! Keep practicing, you will get it!

  • did anyone fantasize about getting a handjob from those fingers? anyone?

  • Magnificent!

  • I really like the end of these etude

  • MOJA ULUBIONA ETIUDA. W SKALI TRUDNOŚCI 1-10 WŚRÓD ETIUD CHOPINA TO JAKIEŚ 5-6

  • I am going through these Etudes and I am totally completely amazed by your performances. Bravo.

  • she has really lovely and slender arms.

  • The trills are almost constantly played throughout the peice. Craziness

  • wow i like her hair just as much

  • She plays the end so elegant, i love it.

  • @MetalAge19 The end is really nice. I love it.

  • 1.i hate it cause its too hard, 2.i love it cause she can play it perfectly~ what one should i choose. i think ill go with 2 so people don't eat me hehe.

  • @PublicLibraryx i think i would just be mad... eat not so much

  • @PublicLibraryx its one of the easy chopin etudes

  • @BlazeKenny yeah? we are waiting for your video response...

  • @PublicLibraryx : Every piece, whether we like or dislike it, it always going to be difficult no matter how easy for us it can be. I believe you can play this Chopin Etude Op.10 No.8. Remember, always begin playing slowly hands separate or together. :)

  • @lienmoysam Lol i can play it now xD slightly

  • @PublicLibraryx But like an amateur

  • @PublicLibraryx funny

  • this has always been my favorite etude, maybe even my favorite Chopin piece. No one seems to agree with me on that; but I think this etude is highly underrated because it is rarely played in good taste. Even many of the big names play it choppy and loud. Played well, it is one of the most magical things the composer ever penned. Listitsa does a fine job IMO in this particular etude, though it could use more contrast. What a joy to finally see it played! The mid section looks terribly hard!

  • The speed of your fingers simply amazes me. The lightness. The delicate tone of every note. Your playing has very nice technique, you can hear contrast. Played Beautifully. Nothing more to be said. Simply Amazing. :)

  • Just hyperventilated there..dexterity and lightness and fun skipping and joy and so good

  • Sounds like a badass bösendorfer ;)

  • But you have to play it first to even begin to comprehend Chopin, so the arrogant fucks who do claim they can learn it in a day are better off than most of us here including myself.

  • After watching her hands and listening to the great sound that came out of the piano i am just sitting here and keep telling myself : absolutely amazing.

  • Can't help It, as I continue my studies of this etude, I just keep coming back to this performance.

The 1st ascending arpegio (particulary the C's played by the thumb) tells you way much about the interpreter's technique. It's perfect here. So many pianists don't play it properly as it's so damn hard to keep it sound and still light when employing a honest thumb under aproach (and all fluid with no pedal faking) Miss Lisitsa, your hand is so light I just can't believe it! Thank you for this.

  • she is wonderful in each note!

  • this reminds me of a pedantic squirrel, but a nice pedantic squirrel.

valentina, you are amazing at Chopin!

  • Okay now I am just tired of being blown away. Does this woman have any limits??????

  • I practice this etude for 5 months now. I've heard all the recordings on youtube, many from other sources and ofcourse all from this year's Chopin international competition. Read numerous analyses and comments (Cortot's ftw) and talked it many times with my conservatory teacher. Initially I did not really like your recording that much but now I begin to think that it is among the finest !

  • the melody in the left hand takes a backseat i suppose

  • this is why my teacher always said:

practice scales, practice scales, PRACTICE SCALES!!!

    I hated scales -_-

  • watch zimerman, you'll know the difference right the way:)

  • watch zimerman, even when he's young she's eating dust:)

  • Wow. That was quick.

  • perfect technique. but too fast to feel music though. it's flawless, but how come it doesn't touch me?

  • @marinaleeinnyc Because it's so different from what you have usually heard. I've heard many weird sounding recordings and afterwards they are slowly making sense, or in some cases, less sense. Also she is playing on bosendörfer, which have quite different sound than yamaha or steinway.

  • she's incredible !

  • she looks so.. relaxed!!!whereas my arms hurt already halfway through the piece ):

  • Oh, what a treat!

Thank you! Now I'll go to number 9!

  • 素晴らしい!!!

  • Yet another virtuoso performance!!!

  • Slow it down sweetie...

  • @majav15mg why

  • GREAT job!! which etude should i learn 1st? the Ocean or this 1?? help!

  • @CorelliChopin08 Neither

  • @just502 y?

  • @CorelliChopin08

Most students start off with the Op. 10 no. 5 to master the light touch required in the RH for the subsequent etudes.

  • Beauiifull played and on a perfect Boesendorfer

  • I want to write something here. But I don't know what. Her playing is amazing. Her wrist looks as relaxed as if she was waving farewell to a friend. Her fingers move effortlessly through the keys. And everything sounds clear, clean and immaculate. There is not a single key wrongly pressed in these performances. I think she can not be human. I'm still baffled.

  • @bontempo01 inhuman, and with enough run throughs for a life time.

  • Goddamn hard etude, man.

  • one of my favorite etudes

  • shopping is great

  • I thought that the left hand could of been more vocal, but overally it is great, the overall clearness is really amusing, gives it the correct "light" feel.

  • Chopianist3 thinks he/she is the only one who understands chopin and good music. Hey relax, other know a thing or two about music. I agree with DuhuKaralius. She's good but she's playing this a bit too fast.

One lesson Chopianist3 should learn for sure is to watch his language and not call people names.

  • @orafshin yeah, the dickhead

  • she's playing good i tell ya that, but still. In my humble opinion it's too fast :/

  • This is probably the most easiest Chopin étude for everyone who plays it.

  • le tue mani al pianoforte sono meravigliose...

  • Valentina es genial! Toca bárbaro. Además en este video se peinó :oP

  • PLAIN..No Shaping

  • Lovely piece and playing!

  • fun to listen to!

  • Although I'll never be able to play this piece as fast as she does, in my opinion she has to decrease the power in her right hand a lot -- left plays melody!

    @zerop97: Full agree!

  • @Disse249 I agree with you about the right hand :)

  • I love this Estude.

  • This is wonderful.. very pretty

I like the way she lingers in the pace just slightly from time to time---it takes amazing control to do that so seamlessly.

  • Very good! I like your performance! :D

  • In my personal opinion she is not even interested in music. It should sound simple, bright, but it's not about nothing. It's not a poor peace. Sounds like it is. Fingers running perfectly, but notes have no meaning. Very cold girl.

  • @orlando2130 If you were interested in music you wouldn't judge anyone for his way of playing a piece.

  • @orlando2130 Oh PLEASE!

How can you even suggest that she wouldn't be interested in music? I mean, she has dedicated her ENTIRE life to playing piano, she uses most of her time to practice new pieces and she has a very busy concert schedule. So I ask you to explain this to me: why on EARTH would she go through all that trouble if she didn't love music from the bottom of her heart?

Valentina Lisitsa is one the greatest pianists today, with a unique style combing flawless playing and feeling.

  • @orlando2130 What are you implying? That someone is holding a gun to her head and forcing her to practice the piano everyday for hours beyond hours? Or do you think she is doing this for money? There are better ways to get rich!! The Chopin etudes are extremely difficult; only someone with dedication and passion would be able to master these pieces like she does. Her notes DO have meaning; your just unable to comprehend them. She truly is a passionate artist; she even married a fellow musician!

  • @orlando2130

Oh give me a break! Of course she is interested in music. For some people, the interpretation is comprehensible to people and they know that she is passionate about this piece. For other people, this interpretation is incomprehensible and has no meaning to them. I comprehend this interpretation and it's the best I have ever heard, to get this good, they'll have to practice 6-7 hours a day, if not more. Someone who isn't interested in music would never practice that long.

  • Your smile really brightens my day!!!

  • @889michael

I dont know you, but from the "sound" of it, I think you have fallen in-love...

    (me too ;) )

  • aimbot...nuff sed

  • Why does this girl forcefully remind me of Luna Lovegood?

  • because there's nargels in the paino strings =D

  • @PointAndPurpose well, there's the possibilty of you being another crazy HP fan

  • @PointAndPurpose agreed

  • @PointAndPurpose What an epic comment. XD

  • @PointAndPurpose Haha... and i think Fazil Say sort of reminds me of Severus Snape ...

  • @PointAndPurpose

the wierd chick from harry potter?

she reminds me of her to... xD

  • @PointAndPurpose lol she really does

  • @PointAndPurpose lol

    same thing happened to me

    hahaha

  • @PointAndPurpose its all the hair and her facial expression. thats been haunting me for a while i've been screaming in my mind: "who does she look like!?!?!?!" :D

  • @PointAndPurpose Because they're both magical.

  • @PointAndPurpose You're right, but she also remids me of Megumi Noda.

  • @PointAndPurpose lmfao now that you mention it....

  • Really like this etude, I wish she brought out the LH more, which has the theme much of the time and the RH was softer though.

  • oh that SMILE again!! xDD!

  • she's incredible

  • Look at her smile. Shes just simply lost in her piece. Mind body and soul.

  • So cool...

  • Valentina novamente atingindo os limites da natureza humana.

    A melhor pianista do mundo.

    Magnífica.

    Perfeita.

  • SO HOT!

  • The only thing that separates us is practice.

  • Hey! You can't hold quarters on top of those hands!

  • However there is a very big difference to being ABLE to play pieces like this. . .

but being able to play like Valentina is where the problem begins haha :) as in my opinion no one can replicate such prowess and virtuosity.

  • i wonder how long it actually took chopin to write this lol

  • Flawless!

And btw, took me more than 10 years of intense training to master the etudes.

If you can do this in one day, in 10 you could rebuild the world trade center itself! Praise the lightspeed hands!

  • tout ce que peux dire, je reste bouche bee...

incredible great performance all the etudes.

everything is clear, there is nothing uncontrolled everything is precisely in time and sound. and the big flow is there at any time the best phrasing I ever heard....

  • The look on her face shows this is one of her favorites. And she certainly champions it as if it were.

  • Beautiful, relaxed playing. It's fascinating to see how absolutely "clean" performances of the same piece can differ so widely - compare this with the same piece on YouTube by Horowitz, Gorlatch and Ashkenazy.

To me, this is an archetypal feminine performance - no, quiet, you feminists out there, I'm NOT knocking it, just saying that it's a very feminine interpretation - much less powerful left hand, more emphasis on a very flowing right hand.

    An interpretation from the heart.

  • I agree, there ARE people who can do this in one month. Not the average, that is for sure. But I know some of them. There's no need to get angry or to give negative just because he said this. It's a true fact, that's all.

  • it took me like 4 months to get it kinda down

  • Este estudio es hermoso=D!! y vean cómo Valentina lo disfruta=D!!!

This etude is beautiful=D!!! look at how she really enjoy it=D!!!

  • You sir are an absolute idiot. Whilst only few can play Chopin, almost none understand him, even the best of the best after playing a single Chopin etude for 10 years straight will admit that from that single etude there is still more to learn. Whilst you may boastfully say "Oh I can play this etude after a single day" (Which is the STUPIDIST statement I've heard so far on youtube) I can assuredly say you couldn't EVER play like Lisitsa, let alone grasp the complexities of Chopin.

  • @Chopianist3 I don't think anyone understands Chopin. I doubt whether he ever really understood himself however this lady's playing is absolutely wonderful.

  • @Chopianist3 You spelled stupidest incorrectly, Master of Chopin Complexities.

  • @Chopianist3 Oh i can play like her!!!!.......in my dreams!!! and i agree with you!!i play the same thing like her but she is TOO FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Chopianist3 You sir may have my cookie.

  • @Chopianist3 You sir have made the PRETENSIOUSIST statement I've heard so far on youtube :P

  • @Chopianist3 I completely agree with you. Can you imagine George Sand standing behind Chopin listening to him play live? What a rush!

Peace & Love Paulina aka Italian for Patty
