  • nice achewood shirt

  • o_o

  • Why would anyone wanna bag on this? this is the most BA thing i have seen while googling monomes

  • How do you use the spacenavigator in making music? I've always wanted a monome and a spacenav because I do 3D modeling and game dev, but I never thought to use it in the process of making music.

  • How did you manage to do this with those things? I find them SOO confusing but I really want one ‘cuz you can rock some really sick beats with them.

  • i was wondering were i could purchase a monome also how much do they roughly cost?

  • @SuperMrannoying Hey, in regards to your question about where to purchase a monome, and how much they go for usually, there are a lot of people trading and selling them at monome dot org on the forums. The person/s who make them only make a batch of them every 6 or so months and so dispersing them relies on the community. The main builder makes the larger table you see there for 1400$, a table which is half of that one for 800 and the small one for 500. people sell them for less however.

  • procedurally-generated music! Very cool.

I love Conway's "life." This makes me wonder what other "acorns" would look like with different instrument sets.

  • sounds like rusko.

  • People commenting on what it sounds like:

You must be missing a lot of good music! Who said it was supposed to sound pleasing? Is "good" music required to sound pleasing? Is the material developed from this experiment not extremely valuable in many ways?

    Revbean: impressed!

  • sounds like shit

  • i heard somethin comin together at 134

  • what's that twist knob? Reminds me of a 3d mouse...

  • This sounds like it should be on an Aphex Twin album, good work

  • Dude, that is awesome

  • my head hurts

  • That was awesome! :) gj

  • its just a bunch of fucking noise.

  • sounds like fucking dogshit! BOOOOH!!!! Monome sucks, learn playing the keys or guitar you sucker!! You are just raping music with such crap!!!

  • that was freaky. - rev sharpton

  • that sounds like the theme song for bad acid trips.

  • You are an outstanding glitch monkey! That is one of my highest gear related compliments. I like what you produced at times it reminded me of those giant Church Pipe Organs or what you'd hear in a Gothic Cathedral on Sunday before Mass.

  • dude.....that sounds SOOOOO wierd. Did i mention that wierd=good?

  • One day we will land somewhere and shout : we come in peace. flying monomes style

  • pretty interesting patch. I need to hop onto a monome here soon and see what one can achieve.

  • this shit is siiiiiick!

  • wth ? xD

  • 0:19 scared the shit out of meXD

  • I'd love to have this patch....... if i actually were able to process computer language i'd be writing programs but no..... java = static to my mind. so good job on this :-)

  • alien work

  • this is an awesome sound. the best and worst part about music is that without this sound there wouldn't be the distinguishing factor in what is "good" and what is good. this is good, which is good, of course. great patch, fellow experimentalist.

  • monomes taste good:)

  • Good stuff

    I like me a bit o' dissonance

  • You're totally right! Experimentation is the key to create innovative music.

And I don't think it's shitty at all. In fact, I can actually imagine Bjork humming, screaming and singing beautiful icelandic words beside you. lol

  • F**k you man's wrong with you??

  • brian eno would love you for this man its amazing dude .. if people understood the meaning of this they would like it .. its like the sound of life ;)

  • this is balls to my ears

  • @roma4593 this is ears to my face

  • That has sounded pretty shitty.

  • dont think you really understand what it is man .. not your fault though .. chaos ;)

  • kewl

  • gliders (walking thing)

  • game of life

  • DUUUDE- i remember playing that game fucking ages ago- i dint even need to read the description to recognize the pattern combinations (the walking one specifically) -

i just couldnt remember its name - anybody no wer to get?

    trippy monome piece, niiice

  • This is fucking cool. And of course... people are hating on it.

  • @MusicFreakDayton its called the game of life its a game not music softwear

  • What is the thing that he is turning to change the pitch???

  • anyone who wants to play around with this and has a wii can try out this homebrew soft called harmonium it's got this "life" option you can enable, which is similar, (though, not as cool as the monome hehe) but fun to play around with. the whole idea of an aural creation becoming a visual stimulation is just awe some and in a way this inventive new social experiment in itself... i need to get one of these monomes... (hem hem, as soon as i have money...)

  • Come on. It's called experimentation. It's what the whole monome community is about. I wrote a patch to see if I could get interesting MIDI notes out of a Game of Life simulation. And I wrote a patch to see if I could mirror the 40h and the 256. And I came up with a softsynth sound that I liked, and I filmed it. I was having fun. Either you like the final product or you don't, that's fine. But to say experimenting of any kind is a waste is missing the point.

  • Ah, I apologize. I didn't read the description. When I watched the video I thought you were just making the monomes play random notes and flash in patterns. Now that I know what the fuck is going on, that's pretty damn cool.

  • @revbean

I really love it! That said, it might have something to do with the fact that i had the same idea some days ago :) by i don't have a monome nor am i very skilled at programming. So it's nice to see it in action and not just inside my head :D thx

    And good work!

  • @revbean

that's just a bunch of crap people say when they cant make real music.

  • woooow...what an asshole. I didn't know someone could get so upset over some dude playing a monome. kinda sad, actually.

  • So now people aren't allowed to do what they think sounds cool? I think you need to quit listening to the radio.

  • These thing completely confuse me as well. I sort of hate watching the making of electronic music using machines like these, because unless your familiar with the machine they're using, you have no idea whats going on haha.

But I can forget my frustrations with not understanding the machines, I absolutely love it. Hahah, good video man.

Sounds a bit like The Album Leaf from 2:26 onward.

  • these things make completely no sense to me. im baffled.

  • a bit pointless

  • That was trippin me out for a second...good lord.

  • Nice... like Apex Twin Tweek Action a little bit

  • Game of life. Ni-ice. :D

  • I have that 3dconnexion space navigator... and I'm a retard thinking it was mainly for 3d.

  • Yo revbean, Really cool work, loved it.

Fuck the haters, if it weren't for people like you, trying new and experimental things, we'd probably all still have out houses and have to walk through the back yard in the middle of the winter to take a shit. I like shitting indoors.

  • is that another monome next to the 40h?

  • I honestly don't know why people are giving the guy crap about this. So you think it's not the most tasteful sound. Big deal. Would you like it if people said what you created looked like shit? Chances are you prbably wouldn't care. If thats the case, what makes you think he cares?

    Fucking fools..

  • theyre just jealous that he has 2 and they dont have any... i know i am. if they didnt like that type of music then why would they even watch it!

  • while monome may be the future of music... this is not. Cool toy

  • TRUE! How much costs you this setup ? pfff, gimme the little 1 :P

  • Oh, I get it. It's meta-commentary. You're saying that stupid rich kids troll YouTube with "clever" (those are air quotes) usernames leaving vaguely insulting inane comments that add nothing to the discussion. Wow. You are so right on.

  • I think its awesome that you're able to do this with the monome. Gotta love open source. I understand that you spent a great deal of money on your setup, but its not like this is all you do with it, "yourmumsucksdick" is just an idiot and wishes he could afford a nice setup like that.

  • this is interesting. and I must say, reading the comments from people on your videos is, a real laugh. Hey people: it's called exploration! It's kinda the nature of an open community. get with it.

  • Totally aggree with Jimgray424

  • interesting piece.

  • i really like how you incorporated "life" into this

    excellent :D

  • life is in everything. unless you're a robot

  • Actually it's released under a Creative Commons license, so no worries about copyright. (Yes, I know you're being hyperbolic.)

And you'd think that someone with "666" in their username would have more appreciation of cacophony. Geez.

  • I'm maybe going out on a limb a little bit here, and I'll be the first to admit that I very well could be wrong, but a gut feeling tells me, given your general disregard for spelling and grammar, that my vocabulary is probably larger than yours.

But feel free to stop by and make irrelevant comments about short lived prog-metal bands any day. Or rather, don't.

  • FACEPALM

  • and this is all coming from the guy who doesn't even know how to spell "cool". Delete you're account. Your thoughts are no longer beneficianl to the Youtube Community.

  • Thanks for your insightful comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

  • You must be kind of insane, because with this piece of crap, you can have loads of fun triggering sounds from your computer and watch lights flash, perfect for post-excessive drug users turned serious musicians

  • if u really listen..he does have a lil beat backing it..i want one so dayum bad. i was gunna go to Full Sail University in Winter Park..for Recording...yo i need one

  • What is the knob you use?

  • It's a SpaceNavigator from 3Dconnexion. Designed mainly for CAD modelling and VR/gaming, but fun as a multi-dimensional MIDI mod-wheel too.

  • Thanks!

  • Fantastic. I was lucky enough to order a monome just last week. Cant wait!!!

  • great work. thanks for sharing!

  • I like that shty. That shyt would be hot with a beat!

  • I just got a 256. Is the life/midi patch you're using on the site, or did you write it yourself? (It appears it's a 40h patch, and then you're just doubling the lights for the 256, right?)

  • I'm using the 40h version of the life app for ChucK, and a simple little Max patch that I wrote. It reads as input the OSC /led messages on port 8080 instead of the /press messages on 8000, then forwards them as /press messages to a MIDI mapping patch (a slightly modified version of Matthew Davidson's fourths, but 40h_midi would work as well) and as /led messages to a different port, which is finally read by MonomeSerial and sent back out to the 40h.

  • That's right about the doubling for the 256. Which is happening in yet another custom Max patch. The 40h could be taken out of the equation, but since there's only 128 notes in MIDI, the 256 would have to be mapped differently.

  • Nice work. I'm still waiting for MonomeSerialXP to drop out of beta - it still crashes my box and the 256 router is only a workaround. I should really take the time now to learn MAX. Did you find it difficult?

  • Max is certainly *complex*, but once you get into the right mindset for it, the visual programming is really quite intuitive.
