I just saw the Kansas City Symphony play this piece antiphonally in their new hall in the new Kauffman Center for the Preforming Arts earlier today and I literally cried from the immensity of the piece, the brilliance of the performance and the unbelievable acoustics in the hall. It was the best concert I have seen as of yet in my life. Unbelievable.
@somebody9484 actually having played this piece my though as it how he timed it so " perfectly " is he rushed it and help out the last note until midnight ... the orchestra itself sounds great but the conductor needs to work on his tempo.
@contranimal Honestly, in my experience of playing it and hearing several recordings, he didn't hold that last note out much. I felt like he cut it short. But it did feel a little rushed. I think that's because he wanted to finish in time. But hey, it was a great performance none the less.
It's like seeing the sun for the very first time, rising in between darkened hills, while dawn is still clinging to darkness. Then as the sun suddenly appeared, we first saw the pines, shadows still, and next, a road. We hear the distant tremor of march. As the sun rises higher, the legion appears in its glory, while we stare in awe. Their presence, their might, the standard billowing in the morning, intimidates at first, but one of the legions smiles. And we join in their march, exultant. IMHO.
@MrGribenson He wrote around the same time as Holst and Stravinski, which could explain the reasoning why his music isn't as played. The Roman Triptych doesn't sell as fast as the Planets or Rite of Spring.
Pines of Rome / Appian Way gets me every time....thanks for posting this. I'm not an expert on classical music at all, but I am interested in learning more about it. Can anybody recommend similar music to this? I'd like to hear more like it....it generates such an emotional response I'd like to hear more. Thanks again:)
@henry7261 Finale to the Firebird by Stravinsky, 3rd movement of Sibelius' 5th symphony, 4th movement movement of Tchaikovsky's 6th, 4th movement of Mahler's 5th (I think its 4th movement-The Adagietto anyway) Hope thats some emotiove music.
I love this piece of music. Such a monumental salute to brass and woodwinds! You can practically see and feel the Roman Legions approach as the music builds. I also love the conductor smiling and jumping around in the video. Suggestions: Spartacus and Phrygia Adagio by Aram Khatchaturian. Finale to the Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinski, The Planets by Holst (especially "Jupiter)." "Nimrod" by Elgar and the ultimate emotion tugger for me "Largo" from Dvorak's New World Symphony.
I consider Respighi the greatest orchestrator of his time, and the "Rome" trilogy is testament to that fact. It's unfortunate he was only 57 when he died.
Alright, in comparison to the number of works out there it's very few lol. tchaikovsky's 4th the finale is unbelievable, and the end of stravinsky's firebird brilliant! there are plenty more :P
Magnificent playing. What a way to bring in the New Year. You cna almost see the victorious legions coming up the Via Appia on their way to a triumph.
Without doubt one of my favorite classical pieces along with Fountains of Rome and so far I think this is the best interpretation I have seen on youtube, great tempo and great balance. I got to see this live performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic this past November, nothing compares to seeing it live, it is absolutely impressive. What you never hear in videos and recordings is the powerful pipe organ playing the really low bass notes underneath the glorious chords of the orchestra. Brilliant!
The best performance on tube...! It is extremely difficult to "catch" the sound of the final of "Pini dit Roma" without too much volume in it, to continue with performing as clear, open, transparent, and in the more fragile parts of the beginning as well in the "tutti" with all its opened registers! It is almost impossible, it did not succeed for hundred procent, but the result of the final of this beautiful composition is as glorious as it has to be, brilliant in every detail.
How wonderful it may sound for the audience: there is no better way to feel the enormous victory in yourself when you are IN the orchestra, really, that is undescribable, so intense, an unforgettable experience.
"A new year begins at the same time as the performance's ending." Really?! What perfect timing! What a way to kick off the new year!!! Great performance!

Love it ! ,, at this tempo it took on a nautical ramming speed sort of flavour,, rather than the sensation of Columns of Roman soldiers en route.

very lively performance; so the crowds response but i think the Brass could be more pronounced or maybe theres a loss in low freqs in translation.
An underlying base from organ is present in some versions...thats adds a deeper sense of presence as u can imagine
