  • Confetti blasts at the right time. Awesome! :)

  • Now THAT is ringing in the New Year. Literally. Well more like blasting but it works. =)

  • Homework has never been this epic. Gods ipod right here

  • I am currently in a middle school honor band and we are going to play this at the heritage festival. This is going to make us win

  • glorious...thanks for posting!

  • Band music always brings chills but never this many. Played this song at band camp. Just epic

  • this is so epic. my second favorite movement right behind pines near a catacomb. Ottorino respighi is really a genius. great job, Tokyo Phil!

  • Well i have to say that was Fantastic,The music, the vigour of the orchestra and the timing, with bringing the new year in.Absolutely superb!

  • Damn that was timed Perfectly!

  • I just saw the Kansas City Symphony play this piece antiphonally in their new hall in the new Kauffman Center for the Preforming Arts earlier today and I literally cried from the immensity of the piece, the brilliance of the performance and the unbelievable acoustics in the hall. It was the best concert I have seen as of yet in my life. Unbelievable.

  • Love it ! ,, at this tempo it took on a nautical ramming speed sort of flavour,, rather than the sensation of Columns of Roman soldiers en route.

  • this made my math homework EPIC.

  • very lively performance; so the crowds response but i think the Brass could be more pronounced or maybe theres a loss in low freqs in translation.

An underlying base from organ is present in some versions...thats adds a deeper sense of presence as u can imagine

  • @somebody9484 actually having played this piece my though as it how he timed it so " perfectly " is he rushed it and help out the last note until midnight ... the orchestra itself sounds great but the conductor needs to work on his tempo.

  • @contranimal oops typo .. should say " rushed it and held out the last note...."

  • @contranimal Honestly, in my experience of playing it and hearing several recordings, he didn't hold that last note out much. I felt like he cut it short. But it did feel a little rushed. I think that's because he wanted to finish in time. But hey, it was a great performance none the less.

  • still gives me goosebumps

  • Great to see an orchestra actually playing the hell out of this piece for a change!

  • love the way how this video was edited with pics of rome:) i love rome! it has certainly brought back all my happy memories in rome

  • Probably one of the loudest phrases of music in the classical repertoire.

  • i just played this piece at state and i thought we sounded pretty good, but these guys are just amazing.

  • The people who disliked this video should be hanged on the Pines Of Rome!

  • @thetreydz

Or more appropriately, along the Appian Way.

  • Sasuga!!!

  • The graphics and the early darkness were quickly supplanted by a brilliantly driven orchestra and conductor. This was just wonderful!

  • awesome~

  • @XXX775ShadowXXX He is a wise man.

  • The cracker at the end is mechanically controlled and no one can change the timing even slightly. Thats why this performance is special.

  • Awwwwwww :O

  • This is beautiful! A truly amazing interpretation of this music.

  • ¡Nunca borres este vídeo, porfavor!

    Never delete this video, please!

  • 2 people love rock

  • Ok, I'm partying with these people from now on!

  • I could watch/listen to this a billion times. And get chills every. single. time.

  • It's like seeing the sun for the very first time, rising in between darkened hills, while dawn is still clinging to darkness. Then as the sun suddenly appeared, we first saw the pines, shadows still, and next, a road. We hear the distant tremor of march. As the sun rises higher, the legion appears in its glory, while we stare in awe. Their presence, their might, the standard billowing in the morning, intimidates at first, but one of the legions smiles. And we join in their march, exultant. IMHO.

  • i LOVE this piece, we are playing this song when we go to ITALY!!! lol. and i cannot wait, its so exciting!

  • EPIC WIN!

  • What a great way to open the New Year!!!! Superb!

  • Reminds me of the legions on the march - even without the Roman ruin images.

  • Reminds me of the Roman legions on the march

  • the only italian composer i like, that's cause he doesn't sound italian

  • Respighi is just ...fantastic. And to some degree overlooked. I dont know why.

  • @MrGribenson He wrote around the same time as Holst and Stravinski, which could explain the reasoning why his music isn't as played. The Roman Triptych doesn't sell as fast as the Planets or Rite of Spring.

  • I think Otaka caught some air on his cutoff...but who wouldn't have at the end of a piece like that? :) Great to see an enthusiastic conductor

  • Epic new year's eve FTW!!! I love the Pines of Rome. <3

  • simply brilliant

  • Beautiful concert !!!

and control of the time too.

  • Henry7261

We must not forget the finale from Mahler's 3rd. Mind you, it's 30-minute build to its climax!

  • Ave, Roma! Arigatou, sensei!

  • EPIC....

  • LOL! Second Violinist at 5:10 ...

  • Pines of Rome / Appian Way gets me every time....thanks for posting this. I'm not an expert on classical music at all, but I am interested in learning more about it. Can anybody recommend similar music to this? I'd like to hear more like it....it generates such an emotional response I'd like to hear more. Thanks again:)

  • @henry7261 Finale to the Firebird by Stravinsky, 3rd movement of Sibelius' 5th symphony, 4th movement movement of Tchaikovsky's 6th, 4th movement of Mahler's 5th (I think its 4th movement-The Adagietto anyway) Hope thats some emotiove music.

  • I love this piece of music. Such a monumental salute to brass and woodwinds! You can practically see and feel the Roman Legions approach as the music builds. I also love the conductor smiling and jumping around in the video. Suggestions: Spartacus and Phrygia Adagio by Aram Khatchaturian. Finale to the Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinski, The Planets by Holst (especially "Jupiter)." "Nimrod" by Elgar and the ultimate emotion tugger for me "Largo" from Dvorak's New World Symphony.

  • FWIW, I searched for this piece after hearing the Shostakovich Festive Overture on the radio, which reminded me of it. Powerful piece.

  • a very fine performance!

  • I consider Respighi the greatest orchestrator of his time, and the "Rome" trilogy is testament to that fact. It's unfortunate he was only 57 when he died.

  • incredible.. one of the VERY few pieces that gives me goosebumps every time!

  • VERY few? mahler doesn't give you goosebumps? beethoven? tchaikovsky? stravinsky? berlioz? messiaen?

  • Alright, in comparison to the number of works out there it's very few lol. tchaikovsky's 4th the finale is unbelievable, and the end of stravinsky's firebird brilliant! there are plenty more :P

  • haha i'm just giving u a hard time

  • lol fair enough

  • honestly. . .I agree with him, this song really affects me differently than other songs

  • amazing performance!

  • micidiale

  • super performance-

  • haha we are playing this right now in band!!! lol i love it!!! we dont sound to shabby right now but we're getting there :D

    woot woot french horn love!!

  • perfect timing!

  • sweet

  • Thrilling!

  • Magnificent playing. What a way to bring in the New Year. You cna almost see the victorious legions coming up the Via Appia on their way to a triumph.

  • i loved this piece when i played it in my symphony, it gives a nice break from all the off beat crap french horns normally get in marches

  • It's a wonderful to play.

  • Great performance

  • Without doubt one of my favorite classical pieces along with Fountains of Rome and so far I think this is the best interpretation I have seen on youtube, great tempo and great balance. I got to see this live performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic this past November, nothing compares to seeing it live, it is absolutely impressive. What you never hear in videos and recordings is the powerful pipe organ playing the really low bass notes underneath the glorious chords of the orchestra. Brilliant!

  • Best on youtube! And you can tell the conductor is loving every minute of it...I would kill to direct that orchestra!

  • A TRIUMPH!

  • The best performance on tube...! It is extremely difficult to "catch" the sound of the final of "Pini dit Roma" without too much volume in it, to continue with performing as clear, open, transparent, and in the more fragile parts of the beginning as well in the "tutti" with all its opened registers! It is almost impossible, it did not succeed for hundred procent, but the result of the final of this beautiful composition is as glorious as it has to be, brilliant in every detail.

  • How wonderful it may sound for the audience: there is no better way to feel the enormous victory in yourself when you are IN the orchestra, really, that is undescribable, so intense, an unforgettable experience.

  • stupendo,

  • What a way to ring in the new year! Great performance!

  • Great concept, and great performance. Thank you.

  • I would have to say the this is one of the most EPIC pieces of music to be written EVER

Playing this on new for new years only made this EVEN BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Fantastic performance! Wonderful idea to open the new year with. :)

  • Much better than flying whales!

  • I totally agree! The flying whales are kinda silly and they didn't do catacombs.

  • ohhhh mannnnnn awesome.

  • that truly was an amazing performance! one of the best that i've heard ever!

  • "A new year begins at the same time as the performance's ending." Really?! What perfect timing! What a way to kick off the new year!!! Great performance!

  • The English Horn player is amazing!!!

    Awesome performance overall!

  • that's amazing

  • Both conductors and the performances of this are very wonderful.
