i'd have to say that the quality of speakers can let you know if it is music or not. if you listen to "music" on laptop speakers and it does not sound good, then it is most likely not music.
All this talk of music quality is a good thing to have in a digital age where it's all 128kbps mp3 and worse. I was only listening to this album last week, on vinyl, through a pre & power amp setup on sonos floorstanders. It makes a difference.
Read the comment redun made a couple of comments before you. He is entirely right. Saying production is not relevant, when talking about electronic music, is like saying that you could make the same kinda art with a gimmick guitar the same way you could with a precise quality instrument.
There is a difference between noise, and structured noisy sounds. A quality input (production) and output (soundsystem/headphones) is the only way to hear the art the way it is made to be heard.
@Jowellzzz Hecker is a God, Machinefabriek is kind of average. If you want something more similar to this guy I would suggest Lawrence English (particularly Organs Lost at Sea).
@simoncosa I've always told people, when showing them a track of mine or some other artist, that it's essential for electronic music to be played on a full range, balanced system; psyco-acoustically, most everyone's brain knows what to do with a guitar, drum, organ sound, etc, no matter how shitty the speakers. But a lot of producers in experimental and even mainstream styles are essentially auditioning sounds that your brain has not processed before, so it's important to get it right :)
Ben Frost, Tim Hecker and Stars of the Lid, now that is one hell of a drone fueled musical orgy! all I need now is some Eluvium and Loscil ta bring me down!.
@simoncosa Laptop speakers are the worst. It also makes me sad how bad a lot of the popular headphones are. Skullcandy charges a fuckton for their products when none of them are worth more than $10 in sound quality.
Also: it's funny how people are being elitists about audio quality here, on youtube where the audio bitrate for this resolution is 128kbps. Nice going.
I love how this man manages to capture Tim Hecker's subtle melancholic tendencies and Merzbow's blaring crushing audio overtones all at once. Incredible.
I fucking hate this album. It's so good that compared to other music it's deific - I can never listen to anything else and actually enjoy it after this.
@RaskolnikovRomanovic id simply lose headphone idea... 500$ means a decnt couple of barebone speakers which can then be improved by skill and effort into a set of briliant sound tech
im working on a set of 6 barebones making the ideal silence... it takes a lot of tries to make the speakers sound good, but it takes briliance i dont have to make them perfect

When I listen to Ben Frost I feel like monsters are trying to claw their way out of my speakers. I'm doing my best to help them.

hairyhoff 1 year ago
@hairyhoff if your budget is low (sub 500$+) you are far better off investing in good headphones and/or a DAC
Alessandro MS1 or 2 and whatever DAC you can afford will sound amazing (but do your own research and homework for your own needs!)
