Unfortunately just like all other invasive species around the world... the particular animals/insects must be euthanized or something to the same effect. I am a Ball Python breeder and I've also owned a Burm, and saddens me to think of helpless Burms being brought down. But because they do not belong there, they need to go to protect the rest of the native species that do belong. It is what it is unfortunately.
There should be a ban for importing non indigeneous species. Our American birds, reptiles, other animals are already highly endangered. If a ban sounds too severe, then implement an annual registration fee, with a necessary microchip maintenance requirement, levy a tax on sales of these types of pets with the tax being used to conserve our own native endangered American animals. There are more regulations for owning a dog in America than a Burmese python, or African Gaboon Viper.
wow these guys are idiots ,what they fail to mention is that IBD is only transferred through boas and pythons ,where there are none of those native to Florida ,all native snakes in Florida are colubrids ,which means that these snakes will not "infect" Florida's native snakes with it ,so just cross the exotic disease theory off the chart ,anything to make burms looks bad ,and shit like this is gonna get HR669 and S373 bills passed
ANYTHING TO MAKE THESE SNAKES LOOK BAD , I HOPE THE GLADES STAY FULL OF THEM , OH INFACT LETS KILL OFF THE WILD HOGS ARNT THEY OVERPOPULATED DAMAGING CROPS ATTACKING PEOPLE WELL!
the thing is the FWC has to much power now HIDE YOUR SNAKES NOW LEGAL OR ILLEGAL THEY WILL TAKE YOUR SNAKE !
WHAT A BUNCH OF COMMIES , NAZI AND GHESTOPO POLICE !!!
i keep big snakes but thats a retarded comment... u want some animals to go extinct? cuase since burms have no natural predetors in america they will eat indigenouse animals to extinction
@169batman691 "No natural predators?" Do you actually believe this idiotic statement? What do you think happens when the little baby pythons are hatching? Every predator in the glades is waiting for those tasty morsels to emerge....birds, reptiles, fish, mammals, etc. Not to mention the egg eating predators....raccoons, opossums, etc. eat the eggs before they're even born.
I wish people would think for themselves before parroting crap the news media has made up.
@NineCatsz Yeah, thats right. According to you they should be extinct in south florida from all of the native predators eating them all up. Is that why they're now into Lee County on the Gulf coast & Martin County on the Atlantic? Put down the usark kool-aid kid, you're being seriously misled. I live here, you don't. I've seen them, you haven't.
@hellow533 Maybe I should make a statement here & now. If I had a vidcam i'd make it on all of YT but I don't so here goes. I for one do not hate pythons. I hate those who didn't have the foresight to realise they needed to have a good financial future & the intelligence to understand the awesome responsibility of owning such a potentially large reptile. Back in Nam was when I first saw them and appreciated their size, strength & beauty.
@Inquisitor53 I wanted to take one home but even back then I knew that was where they belonged & growing up in the Florida wilds & knowing it as I do I knew what I could've done would've created an environmental disaster.
My 1st sighting of a burm in the Everglades was in either '83 or 84'. I reported it to various law agencies & exotic pet shops. The responses were everything from tickets for a taillight out & ambiguous death threats from the shop owners. Everyone was in denial.
@Inquisitor53 Now they're everywhere in the 'glades & spreading north & people are still in denial. They deny they're a threat to the 'glades, or that the could winter killed them all off, or they can't live outside the 'glades. Yes, the media enjoys hyping things, that's how they make their money. Which ever station can make the biggest mountain out of the smallest molehill gets the ratings & money. But occasionally they do get it right.
@Inquisitor53 Now usark says there are less than 3,000, the state says over 150,000. But here's what I know from being there: There's damn sure more than just a few thousand. They damn sure survived the winter. They damn sure are spreading. Last year FL said you had to have a permit to hunt & kill them. Now it's FL law that if you see one anywhere outside you're obligated under law to kill it if possible, preferably by decapitation. Well, typical of govt response they reacted too late.
@Inquisitor53 I can understand python lovers getting upset due to my killing their pet's relatives but until somebody comes up with a viable alternative it's the only option on the board for attempting to control them. I really don't care for killing them but they never belonged here. Man introduced them & it's a shame the snake is the one to pay the price. But they are an invasive, destructive element to the land That has fed, educated, & sheltered me & I'm let it die without a fight.
@Inquisitor53 To those of you wishing my death due to my actions, pick a number & get in line. I wish you would've displayed the same zeal over coming down here to safely remove them when I offered my assistance to help locate & remove them several years ago. So you tell me who's to blame for what I now have to do?
I've seen plenty of death anyway, another threat means nothing. If you can handle all the ways the 'glades has to kill you then just maybe you can carry out your threat.
@Inquisitor53 Just remember, it is my backyard & I know it far better than any hot-head reading this. For your own sake don't even try.
Anyway, it maybe a losing fight & I may die fighting trying to control the uncontrollable but I'm not giving up. I was willing to give my life for a country that's given me freedoms that no other country has. Now I'm willing to do the same for the state that helped teach me the skills to survive that war.
@Inquisitor53 This is my last post on this site or any others concerning pythons.
Do forgive the some the grammatical errors.
I'll still read the postings here but will only respond on the poster's channel. So say what you feel needs to be said to me either here or send it to my channel but only if you're civil in your posts. I'll respond ASAP as I've other matters to attend to.
@Inquisitor53 Puhleeze. You wouldn't know an apex predator if it bit you in the ass. Cats are THE apex predator. They kill ANYTHING and EVERYTHING for FUN! Yep, fluffy kills w/o remorse and leave the bodies.
The snakes that were in the ENP are all dead after this past cold winter.
@hellow533 This idiotic statement proves you know nothing about this topic
Burmese pythons do NOT HIBERNATE! They get respiratory infection and die when the temps are 70 and below & what was the temp in southern Florida a few months ago? Oh yeah, 40s day & night which = dead pythons.
@NineCatsz you said they kill anything and everything... so can they kill a whale, a shark, a crocodile, a german shepard? Shows your too ignorant to read your own comments, and that you think cats are able to kill everything...
@hellow533 Your dog killing cats has nothing to do with this topic at all and further proves how big a moron you truly are. Too stupid to GOOGLE simple facts that are right there at your fingertips. You are no better than the journalists who report "news" just to get a rise out of people. They don't give a crap if it's true or not.
Cats are opportunistic killers. It's proven that feral cats kill more native species than any introduced exotic species. GOOGLE it.
the Glades are big enough for all species that have been introduced native or not.Eastern Indigo Snake are endangered because of man first off.just another reason to stay of of the Glades.saying that a gator couldnt eat a 1 year old burmese is a lie.i dont care how they got there hurricane, released whatever it doesnt matter mother nature has a way of leveling everything out.stay out of the Everglades. put resources towards preventin real threats to the eco system cane toads and chinese carp.
@AGator41 So which is it? "the Glades are big enough for all species..." and "...mother nature has a way of leveling everything out", then you say, "put resources towards preventin(sic) real threats to the eco system cane toads and chinese carp." as though pythons aren't a threat as big as the cane toads?
