  • Beethoven wrote this opus in 1810, during a tough time in his life, after being turned down in a proposal for marriage and while he was going deaf; realizing he would never be able to play his concertos in public again. Having trouble in his love life, he wrote to a friend during this time of trouble, "So be it then. For you poor Beethoven, there is no happiness in the outer world you must create it in yourself. Only in the ideal world can you find friends."
