You can claim that this was planned and precisely executed all you like. I have no doubt that Capt Brito is a fine pilot. If you watch he picks up dust with his left wingtip. I am also a 10,000 hour plus commercial airline pilot and was a fire bomber pilot before that. If Capt Brito would have known how close that wing tip was he'd have had a bit more altitude before he started that low turn. There was no way he knew how close he was and he darn near drug a wingtip. Not good form.
@Mushenzi If you are indeed a pilot, then you know Comander César Brito spent more than 100 hours practicing this manouver in a simulator before he did it. The image creates an illusion as there is a low bank where he starts to turn and you don't see it in any footage. There is a picture where that is clear though.
This was all made for the show and it was just a possibility until he did the flight and confirmed that the where proper enough to do what he practiced, so no big secret in it.
You can not "plan" to pick up dust with a wing tip on a large aircraft. Commander Brito damn near got himself and his crew killed . If you can't see that and if Brito can't see that, you guys are in denial.
Are you honestly going to tell me that TAP paid for 100 hours of flight training to practice a low pass? Really? I've been in the business too long to believe that.
@Mushenzi I think you still lack to understand, coming from a pilot with better formation than most of the people, it surely is strange, probably you are the one in denial.
But I'll explain to you again, no prob.
The wing is never as near to the ground as it appears to be to the espectators.
That particular track has a low bank in that spot. Is still a big low bank, but creates a good visual ilusion.
That was the plan of the whole flight and the main reason why it was simulated so many times.
@Mushenzi As about the amount of hours, I don't know how it works on your country or air flight company. In TAP, the simulatores belong to TAP, ANA and the FAP.
There was no payment involved as the investment was done (and it keeps being done) a long time ago by a govermental policy that has been sustained in time since privatizations came.
As for the hours of the pilot, Comander César Brito and all the staff involved worked afterhours facing it as a "hobbie" and no extras was charged.
@Mushenzi To finish the "sermon", if you could please inform the general viewers of the name of the company you work, you would do a great service to people since those who agree with you should feel safe flying their planes, and those who don't, should feel safer choosing other airlines with more confident and preparated pilots. I presume.
@Mushenzi Ah! Welcome to Portugal. We are indeed that friendly when we want with people and general population. It was an air show, it was epic, it was "safe" as all ended up well, and all flights when precisely as planned. It was a good display of habilities, strenght, knowledge and skill. No need to undermine the achievement of a group of dedicated people.
And yes, there are pilots in the world that are that good. If you can't imagine that, than I presume that excludes you from the list.
Keep telling yourself that and maybe it will become true. It was epic no doubt. BTW who do you fly for? From your comments I'd have guess no one? BTW a simulator is not accurate enough to practice a stunt like that low level turn. There was no reason to do it, it was dangerous and it nearly cost an airframe if he would have simply pulled up several hundred it would have been safe.
@MrKyemin " It was a good display of habilities, strenght, knowledge and skill " I have to disagree on that, no need to be rough because some body disagree with you. Probably this pilot was a military one, reason why pushing the manoeuvre to the edge. Unfortunately there are factors that even the best pilot in the world can't control nor even a simulator can simulates. Second pass, banking to the left, lost a little altitude and left wing very close to ground, no margin for any correction.
@MrKyemin There is a big difference between a good military pilot and a good commercial pilot. The first one has to take risks, the 2nd one has to minimize risks. This was not the case, even if it was just an Airshow. There was a very thin line between success and crash. People was very close to envelope of flight. Rules in this Airshow seems to be very different from Le Bourget, Farnborough, Oshkosh and others.
@Mauricio51209 Yes, I agree. We here in Portugal tend to do things by the heart and not always the reason.
But we have a History togheter (more important than any rating), and in this History we had to take risks nobody else could or would. That's why we found and explored that large land of mass known as America. Long before the powerfull could, the minorities trapped against the sea had to take the risk.
This made very strong and good minds in this country.
@MrKyemin Your argument doesn`t convince me. Because Portugal has history when conquerors where taking foreign is part of the nature of this pilot having by history of his country to take this unnecesary risk? So is this a normal behavior of portuguese pilots?
What happens with french ones, english, spanish, all these countries have similar history when invading foreign land, taking the risks you are referring to. Is this making pilots from such nationalities fly an airliner like this one?
What maths are you talking about, can you explain that further?. What are the maths involved in the second pass when banking to the left losing altitud so the wing tip is at no more than a couple of meters from ground?
So this maths where calculated with no margin when unpredictible dynamics of the aircraft impact the way it flyies.
@Mauricio51209 Look man. You just have to acknowledge that all 3 manouvers where studied (with maths yes) and all went as planned. You say it only went a few meters from the ground. Excuse me, but where is your data about it?!
In case you didn't know, the wing wasn't a few meters from the ground. There's a low surface there for a few meters and that is what was planed. Using the lower ground to create an optical illusion.
What do you need to know more?! Search the web and get off my back.
@MrKyemin I don't "have" to aknowledge whet you want me to acknowledge, ahhh I forgot is the history of your country when taking risks when invading foreign lands.
You guys are defending the national pride of a portuguese pilot where probable 90% of serious commercial pilots wouldn't agree on performing such irresponsible manouver.
This is a free space and I can post as much as I want, if you put this video is not to have 100% of people liking it. There is people with safety conscience.
@MrKyemin In addition, if you guys want to put this video on youtube you should expect that not everybody will like it, and I have the right to express what I believe. Unfortunately there is people without safety concerns when flying, and they will not develop such a conscience until they don't lose some beloved one on a crash. Commercial aviation is something serious, and maths can not predict a gust coming from the right when banking to the left, if that's the case he wouldnt be a good pilot.
@Mauricio51209 That's not a commercial flight, but an exibition one. There where only two people on board.
And yes, maths can predict winds (sortta speaking). If you have a certain degree of inclination of the ground, a certain degree of inclination on the wings can be calculated to be perform in certain studied conditions. The manouver, of course, depended on the right conditions (the ones that were studied) and the ok to perform the manouver was given. Math doesnt fail, so didn't the job.
@Mauricio51209 And I must add. The video is not mine or uploaded by me. However, I saw several uploads of this video and if you check it, the only people dishing this manouver off are retired or failled pilots that envy the Cap. Brito mastery. You probably don't know, but we are talking about one of the best pilots in the world and unfortunatly Humans are like this, if they can't do it or understand it, they tend to hate it and speak bad of it. People should really start to dish those feelings.
@MrKyemin Do you know all the pilots round the world and their skills in order to state that?
You have a problem when putting ideas together. Just when you said that your country has an history of taking risk when invading foreign lands is making your pilot to take risks. LOL
Envy of what? of bein an irresponsible pilot in an airshow without any safety rules?
One question or you what is the minimum altutide allowed in this airshow for demonstrations?
@Mauricio51209 Finally, if you "don't have to acknowledge" the information about what you comment, then, although you are free to comment, you are, for sure, commenting about something you are too proud or too selfish to understand. Again, please leave me alone (with my friends and family) and go bother someone else. I really despise people that are dumb, enjoy being dumb, and fight in order to keep being dumb. Although, I would fight for you to have the right to be as you are. Bye.
@Mauricio51209 And just so you dont keep fooling other people with what you pretend to know and talk about, here is a link to a picture of that even that shows you pretty much what I am talking about. Illusion.

Will you shut up now and admit the ignorance of your comments?!
@MrKyemin It seems we got an expert here. What kind of maths are you talking about, please teach us with one single ecuation of flight mechanics, and how the calculations considered the possibility of lateral or longitudinal instability. All that was calculated? Does the pilot has a degree in aeronautical engineering?
@MrKyemin What low surface for a few meter are you talking about? There is another video taken from behind when banking to the left and there was not lower surface, its all flat. And looking at the length of the aileron wih is not longer than 2 or 3 meters, the wing tip was at no more than the same distance.
Low surface for a few meter, cvered by a fraction of a second and all that was calculated with maths before the flight. You are not serious Mr expert in flight mechanics.
That manoeuvre might be very exciting to the spectators but the pilot was lucky as the windsock was pointing down [no wind]. Just a slightly wind gust or wind shear might cause the wingtip to touch the ground with an even more spectacular [disastrous] outcome. That was an unnecessary risky manoeuvre too close to the ground. Even during the air shows safety should be of primary concern.
He shouldn't have been going that low. One small change in wind speed/direction and he is immensely fucked. Did anyone consider wind shear?! Probably not that well thought through. Looked like about 250mph going across there.
@lawriemanc yeah some people dispute the 400mph claim, which like i said was stated in a magazine article and which apparently was confirmed by the pilot itself but im not exactly sure how accurate that claim is.
@lawriemanc that 2nd pass on the opposite direction has some footage taken from right underneath the aircraft, look it up, someone has a playlist of some of the airbus airpasses here on youtube, its amazing what he does with plane, you cant realy see from an horizontal angle. your jaw will drop.

That is crAzy I am a pilot and I fly f16 and f18 and it's hard to do a low air pass with a much smaller jet I would not want to try that with a plane of that size but make a long story short if you tried that here 1 of 2 things will happan you will go to jail or you will never fly again
i love the f16 and f18s. we live near westover and barnes. sometimes they fly over our house in pairs or in 3's doing crazy maneuvers. I LOVE IT!! those jets are insane and it takes skill to fly them. hats off to you!
