I watched Amish: World's Squarest Teenagers. It's a splendid documentary, reality show by The BBC. Five Amish teens live with a different English family for a week, for 4 weeks.

I was surprised that religion is SO pervasive in nearly every aspect of their lives!

Near the end of their stay, they all went to a beach and discovered splashing in the waves is spectacular fun! They would never have been able to visit an ocean beach from their Amish homes.

What kinds of rags do they use, and how do they get them to fit and not mess up? I sometimes wear long bloomers (or oversized men's boxer shorts) for my own comfort, but in my experience you need a regular pair of tight panties if you want a pad to stay put. Is there some kind of belt system for the rags.

We weren't Amish Mennonite, but I grew up a more liberal Mennonite. My mother grew up in the 1920's and I remember her talking about the rags just as you said, wash & reuse--she told me I was so lucky to have the pads to throw away. On the other hand, it was frugal, the rags didn't add to the piles of trash, and were what we would now call "Green." (environmentally friendly)

In the Swartzentruber Amish culture,in most cases.

We call them rags. They were all home made. We had drawer in our dresser just for that. We girl's shared our rags and we wash them and reused them.

My mother told me that when she was growing up, they would make them out of cloth diapers and saftey pin them inside their underwear. Is that what Swartzentruber Amish do? It seems funny to ask, but we are spoiled nowadays and cant imagine that.

@Merryrobin its funny, so many ladies think they are spoiled using disposable pads, yet those women are always the ones who have never tried cloth pads (granted the ones i use are high tech compared to simple rags) but i like many cloth pad users find them such a great improvement from the disposables (and although i like the fact they are "green" thats not at all why i say i favor them its just an added bonus, and they are easy to clean.

@Amishdeception mine i wouldn't call rags, but i use reusable cloth pads, that snap onto my underwear like disposables with wings would, but instead of stickiness on the wings there are snaps that snap together, so how with those styles of underwear would a rag stay in place, or is it used with a sanitary belt type setup? And do you have any tricks for the ladies who bleed really heavy? (my cloth have a waterproof layer, otherwise it would be a mess)
