This is all very interesting historically but am not sure how much of it relates directly to today. Wonder what Hobsbawm would have to say about modern day capitalism and what a socialist alternative would look like.

If you want a more fleshed out theory of the need to institutionalize and assert the "permanence of politics" in a post-capitalist society I would recommend Joseph Schwartz's "The Permanence of the Politics"
