DVD players were expensive back then. It was cost effective to buy a video game console/DVD player, this one of the reasons many bought the PS2.

I think the only 2 reasons why Sony succeeded in outselling the Dreamcast was because of the DVD player and the PS1's legacy. Up until SEGA became 3rd Party, there weren't really any interesting games on the PS2.

Btw Sega did have a DVD atachment and Dreamcast in the works but all got canned for unknown reasons.
