Yes, the lyrics are a translation of Irish poet Thomas Moore's "Those Evening Bells". Kozlov's version was published in the 1820s and set to music by Alyabyev shortly thereafter. The melody is probably much older (though the latter's arrangement helped popularize the song), but the words are not. I recommend that YOU investigate further before posting ignorant, patronizing comments.
"If you are unfamiliar with the art of Boris Shtokolov, you're likely to find his voice to be a truly memorable discovery." Thanks for the warning ;-) I am on my knees, that is the very least I can say...
Norwegian FHorn player here, and I can't say how impressed I am with this artist. What a voice!!
If you are looking for more stuff about him I know one youtube member that has uploaded lots of clips with him. They are nicely edited as well! The username is muuha14
Thank you very much, my dear friend! I followed your suggestion and now I have the lyrics! Concerning our beloved Boris Shtokolov, I think ALL THE WORLD would have loved him! But he was living in a world where politic didn't allow him to be known outside his country... So sad... Now that we can communicate with Russia much easier, we know what treasures we missed... Wonderful Russia always had true great artists!
Thank you, Liliana, for your enthusiastic comments. It is indeed sad that Shtokolov is not better known. However, I am somewhat heartened by the tremendous response on Youtube to his recordings. This forum has allowed many who weren't previously familiar with him to make his acquaintance.
I'm replying to your comment about Shtokolov's popularity in Russia(USSR). When his ROMANCES album was released in America on Melodiya Angel, the critics were very enthusiastic about him and the album...and then, nothing. I don't exaggerate when I say that he is virtually unknown here. As for the "too Russian' criticism, it happens here, when someone is too popular...it's a kind of elitism.
Please does anyone of you could post the russian lyrics of the song На бозымянной высоте which was marvelously sung by our beloved Boris Shtokolov? I would like to sing it while I listen to it! Спасиба большой!
Boris was immensely loved singer in Russia. He was in such huge demand that he did not think he needen gaining more popularity in the West. For me his interpretations of russian folk songs and operas can be compared to only another great singer Fedor Shalyapin. They are two undisputed superstars brightly shining in the sky of not just russian music, but russian culture as a whole.
I first heard Boris Shtokolov in the early 60's, singing Russian Romances on Melodiya. I was astonished then, but more astonishing to me, is the total lack of knowledge about this great basso. Friends who know opera never heard of him. Why? I can only compare Mark Reisen to him...do you have bio info?
See the video description on the right. I always include notes with my uploads. If there is anything else you'd like to know, feel free to send me a message.
It's difficult to say what more I would want to know about Boris. There is virtually no information available in USA about him. Other comments indicate that your videos are a revelation for most Americans. Why is so little known? Did he have political enemies?I have asked executives at record companies, and they agree, never heard of him...it's insane. I do have a CD of his romances, burned from an LP.
I have been an avid collector of recordings since 1956. I have never encountered anything like the mystery surrounding Boris Shtokolov. Even when I traveled to the Soviet Union, it was as though he didn't exist. Here in America, when I asked individuals steeped in knowledge of opera and vocal singing, they invariably claimed ignorance of him. Yet, his basso voice is unmatched. Even on the Internet, little is written.
I grew up in Sverdlovsk, which is where he began his carrier, so my perception may be skewed, but from what I remember, he was universally loved and adored. Except for "штоколовщина" ("shtokolovshina", a term coined by some purist music critics who didn't appreciate his folksy, too-russian, too-emotional style), I do not remember anything negative being associated with his singing, ever. I don't know if that would have had any effect on his popularity abroad though.
Dearest friend! Even though I'm french canadian, I was born with an endless love for Russia: its culture, its language, its history...The discovery of Boris Shtokolov made me fall in love with him! What a wonderful singer! He also seems to have been a wonderful man as well! Are there biography books of him? I want so much to know him more! I get totally mad not to be able to find his recordings! So please, my friend, send us more if you can! Do you live in Russia? Thank you for everything!
Thanks. I have never heard about Boris Shtokolov. As we are always learning in life, it is for me a true finding. As a lover of the Russian folk songs, it is priceless.
I do have several opera aria recordings by Shtokolov on Melodiya LP, and yes, they are fantastic. To my knowledge, these have yet to be released on CD. I'll probably just have them converted to disc for uploading in the near future. Stay tuned!
It's not opera, but please post "Ya vas lyubil" (I LOVED YOU) -- I heard his recording of this song 30 years ago and haven't been able to get it out of my head since ... Recently reacquired the record and converted it to CD. I agree, he's the greatest basso I've ever heard. Joe M.
Konchak, FYI I do have the entire Melodiya LP converted to .mp3 files (about 4-6 MB/file), so could send you the arias for uploading to YouTube (which I don't know how to do) -- yours, erasistratus1 (joe)
Thank you so much for the upload. There aren't a whole lot of great singers I haven't heard, but I was unfamiliar with him. This is so beautiful. Wow!
It is voice of RUSSIA, powerful, bold, overwhelming, delicate, spritual, and BEAUTIFUL at the same time. Thank ou.

Дымилась роща под горою,
И вместе с ней горел закат...
Нас оставалось только трое
Из восемнадцати ребят.
Как много их, друзей хороших,
Лежать осталось в темноте -
У незнакомого поселка,
На безымянной высоте.
It's really quite long... My suggestion is to
copy and google up "Дымилась роща под горою"
