WOW! WOW! WOW! My mother used to sing this around the house! Thank you GNRSlashLover for uploading this. I'm going to play it for my mother this weekend.
@Luray101 You could try wearing a pair of someone else's reading glasses that have been soaped up with shaving cream. This is a great song - gotta find a better version if only audio which is not too terrific in this one either.
Arlene Smith has such a beautiful voice and if you watched the PBS oldies shows, she still has it. Just wish todays "stars" would sing and not scream or holler. Glad I was a teenager in the 50's and early 60's as we might have been the last generation to have a great time with cheap gas and muscle cars.
@rosamedina18 Smokes rolled up in a T's sleeve, Leather motorcycle jackets, "DA" haircuts=bad boys, yet respect for girls. Cars wore porta-wall white walls and were raised (west coast) or lowered, some were chopped and most were mooned and decked. Loud exhaust pipes were in with glass packs or steel packs. The jitter bug was a fast dance that most guys didn't do. Drive-in movies and drive in restaurants with car hops were common. Good boys wore button down shirts and had flat top hair cuts.
Maybe is,maybe, one of the greatest R&R songs ever recorded.Arlene Smith's voice is the best female singer ever.I listened to this cut when it came out,and it is on my I-Pod now Thanks,Arlene.
41,020 views (so far), and absolutely NO dislikes... absolute, unconditional proof that we... NEED... more singers (and beautiful... MEMORABLE songs) like these!!!
A great post of times gone by. Thank you very much. Only one negative and that Dick Clark say's "I'll see you back stage in a little while" What ,he coudn't give them the respect and interview them on camera?I remember a big uproar when Frankie Lymon danced with a white girl on TV. We have come along way ,thank God.
The girls had a wonderful run before the demise of the GIRL GROUP of the mid 1960s. This was THE record to have at the parties my oldest sister had in the late 50s.
I am one who listen to Lyrics and melodies profusely. And i must say the 50's era stands out amongst them all .When listening to the music of current and previous generation. Hands down the last of the innocence Began and ended with the 50's , I'm just saying tho .
@GNRSlashLover....fantastic....I interviewed them all in the early 90's for a long article that ended up not running in The Village Voice...Jackie Landry took me to the school church where they use to have choir practice and where they formed The Chantels....they are not only great singers they are great people too (although Jackie unfortunately passed a way a few years ago)
My favorite girl group of all time. Arlene could really sing and still can. She is so nice. A few years ago on my birthday she called me on the phone to say Happy Birthday. I had only met her twice. This was a shock but felt good.
@supermanchu: Would love to see the Bandstand "Look In My Eyes." Different lead singer on that cut (1961), Arlene Smith had left the group by then and their producer used a lead (Annette Smith, I'm pretty sure her name was) from another girl group he had. Still a great doo-wop sound, though.
@rnross This is just pure talent, no need for all of this silly overdone gyrating that todays artist do in order to cover up for their like of talent. Beyonce, Madonna, Janet Jackson and a long list of others would do themselves a great favor by studying these legends of this wonderful bygone era.
@GNRSlashLover No, but there's a method to his madness. In the 1950's, a "Friend" used him and Sold Tapes to people and said that in order to do Bandstand, they had to Pay Him. It wasn't true but he like Alan Freed were accused of dong Payola and although he was acquitted of the charges when they found out he didn't do it but he lost 8 Million Dollars. From that moment on, he has a major trust issue with people.
@dagosliv you gotta take the sweet with the sour.Dick Clark did so much for R&R and he was smart.i would like to see more archival footage but who didn't watch American Bandstand?thanks Dick!
@laminage : There were five Chantels : Arlene Smith, Lois Harris Powell, Sonia Goring Wilson, Renee Minus White and Jackie Landry Jackson (died from breast cancer in 1997.) Arlene Smith does not sing with the group any more and the newest member of the goup is Noemi "Ami" Ortiz who sings lead.
I;m telling you. Every Girl Group in the Future should look at these Ladies and see what Talent is really all about. They really did kick the door open for so many. I heard in a Documentary about The Girl Group Phenomenon from the 1960's that Darlene Love wanted to meet Arlene Smith saying "She's Got A Voice On Her!" I also heard that The Supremes were also influenced by them. However, I have Their CD of their Greatest Hits from Rhino and weren't there Five Girls and not Four?
Great Video Clip and I loved it. I enjoyed of watching this very much. Those colored girls were the best and one of the kind. I love their song very much. Thank you for putting this up.
