  • An excellent way to defeat 922R is to purchase US made reciever pins from Brownells. The pins are hardened steel, and highly polished along the shank. Your gun will like you for it too, as the hammar, trigger disconnect, etc. will ride smoother. If youre not handy dont do it by yourself tho.

  • How did you make your rifle 922r compliant? Just curious because I'm working on a similar setup. Thx

  • @jdhelf1 There is a ton of information out on the interwebs about getting your rifle compliant. The key is swapping enough imported parts for US made ones. For example, I've got US made magazines, buttstock, and handguard. Those count as 5 US made parts (mags count as three because they are made of sub-parts). That brings me from having 14 imported parts to having 9 (10 or less is compliant).

Now, on a side note, I think 922r is one of if not the most ridiculous firearm laws.

  • All U have to do is file the tab on the ProMag half way down & it won't break until the magazine fell apart. BETTER STILL, ProMags made for the 223 AK's (like SAR-3 & WASR-3) function PERFECTLY in the Saiga without modification because they sit higher in the receiver, so no need for a bullet guide. They are $11.00 now at Cheaper then Dirt.

  • Nice video. I have been looking at buying the Saiga 223 and like the modifications that you made. Would you mind listing all the mod's that you made in one succinct comment? I'm a novice and tried reading all of the comments and responses but I may have missed something. Thx

  • @jdhelf1 Dragunov buttstock, UTG quadrail fore-end, UTG QR scope mount, Surefire 30-round magazines, Condor 3-point sling.

    Hope that helps!

  • What kind of quad rail is that and where can I get it?

  • nice vid bro!!! but where did you get the buttstock? i have same gun but in 7.62x39.

  • @WoWoWeeMo It's the Saiga "dragunov" stock. I believe I got it from Carolina Shooter Supply, but it's been a while. I actually just bought a Saiga 12 last week so they are going to be getting some more of my business soon.

  • The one that I have is essentially a replacement cover with the rail mounted and then the compact scope of 4x32 and the good thing about it is that it has two setting adjusment screws, but I haven't adjusted them since installing it and it has not play. It was merely a suggestion, but if the new quick-release mounts works out then great and I happy for you. Happy shooting!

  • I would recommend dust cover scope mount for AK type weapons as I have one on my Norinco MAK90 and it can utilitze compact scopes and red dots with out hendering performance. just a thought and they are not that expensive either.

  • @ratagris21 I've thought about getting one of those but I'm worried about it holding zero since the dust cover seems to have a very small amount of play in it. I've actually gone back to the quick-release mount with a 3-9x scope and was able to get it much tighter this time.

  • I would recommend the Midwest IND, rear sight red dot mount. It replaces the rear sight with a mount for several micro optics such as the Aimpoint Micro t1 and the trijicon doctor.

  • this is like shooting sniper rifle ammo out of a machinegun....not a fan

  • Magnolia state armory AR mag adapter for saiga .223, install it and use standard AR mags in your AK.

    You're welcome.

  • Is the .223 cheaper than 7.62? I'm looking to guy a Saiga, but not sure what to get it chambered in. The. 223 is what my cousins M14 uses, so we could split bulk. But if its more pricey it wouldn't be worth it for me. Great video. Have a good one.

  • @DoctorGarbo When you start getting into bulk prices they are pretty comparable. That part of the reason I went with .223 for the Saiga. When I bought the Saiga, I planned to get an AR-15 down the road (recently bought a Stag Model 3), so I wanted to be able to share ammo between the two. Beyond that, you can argue the ballistics of one caliber versus the other, but if you are primarily going to be target shooting at reasonable distances, you won't notice the difference.

  • @DoctorGarbo i bought the 556 today and it was a little cheaper than the 762 next to it but idky. but when buying bulk you seem to get a better deal on 762

  • Can these Saiga rifles accept AR-15 mags like the Kel-Tec SU rifles?

  • @pcgamerjoe There is a company that makes an adapter which will allow you to use AR-15 mags in the Saiga 223. Google "Magnolia State Armory" and look at their AR2KU223 adapter. It's a bit pricey and I have not idea how well it works but it sounds like what you are looking for.

  • Who makes this stock?

  • @GiaAshe It is made by Russian American Armory. There are actually some much nicer options out there now in my opinion. If you want that particular one though, google "saiga skeleton stock".

  • Have you tried Galil mags thru your Saiga? If so how did they work for you?

  • @DesertPrepper I haven't tried them. From what I've read, if you install a bullet guide kit, the Galil mags should work in the Saiga 223. Check out Carolina Shooters Supply. That's where I got a lot of my Saiga parts.

  • nice saiga mods!

  • nice mods could u tell me if steel ammo, aka wolf ammo, does it fire flawlessly

  • @drewmyster1000 I think "flawless" is a bit of an overstatement for any ammo, except maybe super high end stuff. I've shot both cheap Federal brass-cased ammo as well as several brands of Russian steel-cased ammo and both have been near 100% is both my Saiga 223 and Stag AR-15.

  • Pro mag are second rate magazines.

  • The only ProMag product I still buy are for the GSG5 .22lr. Every other one I have had over the years is junk. If I get a gun and find it has these magazines with them, I pass them off for free to someone who can try them out. I don't even bother with them. All pathetic junk. Get Mec-gar or OEM, (many OEM mags are Mec-gar.).

  • How in the hell can promag still be in business, almost all of there mags are shit. I have had failures from there saiga, SKS, and AK mags so from that I say boycott promag until they prove that they can make good affordable products.

  • @TheIronBandana Well, I think you nailed it with the "affordable" part. Like many people, I was attracted by the price. More often than not though, you get what you pay for. I have to say that the design of the replacement they sent me is much better than the original. So far, it has held up, and even if it fails again, they still have that lifetime warranty.

  • @TheIronBandana they make all the ruger mags even though they all said there made in italy so idk

  • i wonder if you can tell me the difference between RAA saiga and Arsenal saiga 7.62 x39

  • @blaziankhmer Mine is an RAA so it is Russian made. I beleive Arsenal has both US and Russian made rifles which I believe would affect 922R compliance. Also, my Saiga is chambered in .223 versus the standard AK-47 7.62

  • wow its beautiful where you live great enviorment for shooting , i live in Arizona and its always dusty and windy and ugly

great video , def a lottle long but much care , im for sure getting a saiga rifle with my next check!

i have a romanian wasr-10 right now in 7.62x39 but its just old and not of the BEST quality , looking forward to having a NEW russian riffle to take to the range , er uh i mean dustbowl!

  • This video really docent need to be that long...

  • Hey, nice video. Just bought a new Saiga 223 and am looking into optic mounts. Just curious, what brand was that wobbly mount you had on this one? Thanks.

  • Nevermind the question. I see from a previous comment that you already said it was a UTG mount. Sorry for the redundancy. Thanks.

  • Nice video man. I used to have my Saiga 223 set up just like that until I did the PG conversion. I recently got the barrel threading and added a Tapco Razr muzzle device. Check it out if you have time.

  • @aljking Nice man. I like the mods you did. I'm thinking of turning mine into more of a long range rifle with scope and bipod since I just got an AR-15 which is set up for shorter distance.

  • If the music in the background is gay thumbs UP! LOL

  • @m249a1 Yeah, well, I'm trying to stay legit and only use open-source music wherever possible. It's surprisingly difficult to find decent fair-use music. Plus, this video was from before I found NIN's Ghosts album which I've been using in more recent videos and is a little less "gay".

  • How do you like that stock? I really like the factory standard furniture on my Saiga 223 however I've been looking around at changing it for a new look and extra capabilities.

  • @yq397r It's decent. I definitely prefer it over the standard stock. If I were to change it out, I would do the trigger group conversion and put a pistol grip and six-position stock making it look more like a standard AK. The grip-to-trigger ergos are a little awkward with that skeleton stock but it's something you will get used to.

  • They are definatly great guns!! I got one as well, got the front sight cut off and threaded for a silencer. looks so sweet! And they shoot amazingly well! Good video man!

  • Congrats on a successful trip with your ProMag. I've used several and every one has broke. Therefore I only use the Surefire. There is a fix however. You can install a bullet guide (roughly $25) and that will fix any Promag issues. In fact, I hear once installed you can break off the feed guide on the Promags purposely and it won't jam.I haven't done this myself, but will be ordering mine very soon. Happy shooting. :)

  • @RabidWolvBlue I'm actually really interested in the mod that will allow the Saiga .223 to take AR mags. I just ordered a Stag Arms Model 3 (just waiting on delivery and then I'll get a first impressions video up) and will be stocking up on AR mags so it would be great to be able to interchange between rifles.

  • Wow cool vid. Two things: was that the utg mount that you took off? Have you tried another mount? And where was this video shot. really reminds me of southern Oregon.

  • @Ledmetacdc Yup, that was a UTG quick release mount. I haven't tried another one yet but have been using the quad rail forend to mount that same red dot sight. It is non-magnified so the long eye relief does't matter. If I were to get a new mount, I would probably go with a replacement dust cover with integrated rail on top. I'm not really a fan of the AK side scope mounts.

The video was shot in the northeastern US, probaby about 3000 miles away from Oregon :)

  • yumm Glock 22

  • hi nice video, i thinking getting a saiga but dont no 223 or 5.45x39

  • @jewls323 I went with 223 because my plan is to build an AR-15 in the near future and my preference is to limit the number of different caliber ammo I'm buying on a regular basis.

  • @DangerCL0SE ive own 4 ar-15 there ok but i would not!!! trust it in a shtf scenario

  • @jewls323 Oh trust me, even when I build my AR, the Saiga isn't going anywhere. Aside from the mag issue (not the gun's fault), I've had 100% reliability. If SHTF, that Saiga is my "go to war" gun along with my Glock 22 on my hip.

  • @jewls323 Are you kidding me dude? I'm not going to bash you on your choice of rifle like you might be expecting. I respect your decision on choosing the AK over the AR, they both have strengths and weaknesses. To be honest i love them both, the only way to settle this argument is to own both and have the best of both worlds. :)

  • my saiga .223 has tha same utg quick release and its fine and tha older GEN promags do that 5th gen and up are tha best 2 get when u get them from tha manufacture u get tha newest gen than in a store where it sits for a long time and they dont order any more kuz they dont sell

  • my saiga .223 has tha same utg and its fine and tha older GEN promags do tha 5th gen and up are tha best 2 get when u get em from tha manufacture u get tha newest gen than in a store where it sits for eva

  • @MercOfTheSouth1 Thats funny... I got my quad rail and surefire mags from them. Really basic website but I was impressed by their speed of shipment.

  • So is that the saiga hunting rifle for $350 and you added rails and changed stock? Also would you trust pro mags now vs the over $50 surefire mags? thanks

  • @3255959 Yup, that rifle started out as the basic Saiga 223 "hunting" rifle. I still don't like that plastic tab on the Pro Mags vs the design of the SureFires. Check out Carolina Shooters Supply for the mags. They've got the 30-rnd mags for $28.95 which is much less than I paid when I bought mine.

  • @DangerCL0SE thanks! This seems to be the best made ak at any price from what i reviewed also do regular ak folding stocks fit on this rifle? At atlantic they have this rifle in ak-74 bore and ak 47 bore, but did'nt see it in 223...thanks

  • @3255959 If you do the trigger group mod, you will be able to use standard AK stocks. The Saiga, in its "sport" config has the trigger group set further back than a standard AK. The Tapco Intrafuse T6 stock system is pretty nice too and doesnt require any modification to the rifle.

  • I have a UTG side mount and it works great. I have a tri rail from saiga stock with the same butt stock as the one in the video. my complaint with the tri rail is that the rails cover the first half of the stock making a small portion available to mount items. with a barska laser, ati foregrip and rock mount bipod it looks clutterred.

  • It looks like you have a two point sling worn in a single point configuration. I'd really like to do something like this with my rifle. I have the 7.62 but I have the same stock and same quad rail. Can you elaborate some on exactly what sling you have and how the attachment is made to the rifle? thanks

  • @robertsj12 The sling is actually a 3-point made by Condor. It attaches to the shoulder portion of the stock through the metal rod that runs from top to bottom toward the rear. Up front, I have a picatinny rail sling mount attached to the side of the quad rail. I'll see if I can get a video made showing some more detail. Stay tuned!

  • @DangerCL0SE thanks, that's awesome feedback

  • Nice Video, I really like your setup. I do have a couple of questions for you though. First off who makes the folding foregrip/bipod you have on there? Secondly, you stated that your UTG scope mount was "wobbly" did you try tightening the tension screw all of the way. I use the same setup and it has been alright for me. Lastly, how do you like the UTG quad rail system. I recently added rails to my factory stock, but I think I like the quad rail look better. Does it make the rifle too unbalanced?

  • @aljking Thanks for the comment and questions.

The foregrip is the Tapco Intrafuse Shorty VG. It has a rubber grommet on the bottom that comes out allowing you to insert the Tapco Intrafuse Bipod.

The UTG mount I have is the quick-release version. I think I probably over tightened the tension screw at some point and compressed the rubber washer which may have caused the wobble.

Love the look of the quad-rail and how much rail space it provides but it makes the gun very front heavy.

  • Please convert that saiga properly to its proper ak47 platform. Nice video

  • @DSMtsi23 Haha... yeah, I really need to do the conversion. Just need to get the parts and find the time.

  • @DangerCL0SE i wont change anything on it looks good

  • Word about the caco scope. I picked one up from Wall Mart for $40.00. I am very please with it. Adjustments have "discerable/audible" clicks. This makes adjustments easy. Glass is pretty good with easy to adjust clarity for different distances. AK side mounts are meant to be elevated so that a shooter can look under them to use iron sights for closer shots --- this also explains the high mounted Dragonov cheek piece which use to be confusing to me before I got a scope.

  • Man you sure have some cool guns! You're videos are always fun to watch.

  • @SnowLobo95 Thanks Snow! I'm really enjoying building my collection and sharing it with the shooting community and the world.

  • Nice review. I have a similar setup for my Saiga 308. I have the Dragonov stock and the UTG qd mount, and a Casco scope. The UTG mount works for ok for me. Basically, I have to just use a flat-head screw driver to tighten it down after fastening the qd. It's a cheap mount. You get what you pay for. But, it should work for you too as the 308 has considerable more recoil than the .223. Anyhow, thanks for the review.

  • @00dal00p I'll tell you one thing I don't like about my Saiga setup is the weight balance. The stock is fairly light and the quad rail is relatively heavy making the overall system very front heavy and more difficult to hold on target. I'm thinking of getting a 3-9x scope and turning it into more of a longer range rifle so I'll have to try your suggestion for the mount. Thanks!

  • @DangerCL0SE Agreed with the heavy rail set-up. I would go with SGM or TAPCO intrafuse hand guards. If you do get the CASCO 3x9 scope (good optic for the price) and use the utg mount, you will have to get risers for your scope rings otherwise you will have problem with a scope too low to the standard rear sight. Also can't use iron sights with that utg mount. There are other side- mounts which are higher and allow use of iron sight even with a scope mounted. Just something to consider.
