Generally hockey fights happen between 2 willing participants. As far as etiquette or conduct in these situations, usually team brawls involve all 12 players on the ice. Even guys who are not fighters in these situations will pair up with someone on the opposite team and fight. Teams are tight knit groups and when brawls break out no one wants to be the guy that didn't backup his teammates, or was afraid to get involved in the scrap (macho thinking at it's best....)

Roy wanted in on the action like the rest of his teammates. Nadeau clearly didn't want to fight, but in this situation he should have sucked it up, skated to center ice, and fought Roy. To answer you question, this whole thing looks bad for 2 reasosns: 1) Nadeau didn't want to fight and got beat up (nothing sportsmanlike about that on Roy's part)

Why does Marty fight? Because he's part of a team that's involved in a war. Thankfully Andrews comes over to help him out (which is what should have happened to Nadeau). So this long answer to your question is they're both wrong. Roy shouldn't beat up a guy who doesn't want to fight. But Nadeau should go to war with his teammates. There's no room at any level of "competitive" hockey, for guys who aren't willing to fight to win and be part of a team. QJMHL produces NHL caliber players.

2. When the other guy goes down, you stop.

3. You don't give the crowd the finger afterwards, thinking you're a tough badass because you beat someone who didn't even fight back.
