Germans dont make the best games, only the best dull ones (city building strategies). It's ok to like them but calling them the best that gaming has to offer is an insult to creativity
@Zedofree This game and anno 2070 are completely different in era. So I would say its probably worth it. As for the expansion... It was pretty dissapointing. Everyone was hoping it would let us build a completely new type of city, but it didnt. The only major thing it added was online multiplayer. It also added a LOT of fun scenarios. I would suggest buying the base game and playing it for a while. If you really like it and want more of the same, buy the expansion.
@biciunas so far, there is an expansion called Venice for it. It doesn't add as much as i would like, and frankly its downright misleading about what it actually adds, but its worth it.

I stumbled across this video and thought it looked pretty good, so I got the digital gold edition right after watching this. One thing I would disagree with is that he says you need a really good PC to run it. At the time I built the PC I have now it was a mid-high end gaming PC but by todays standards it would be considered fairly low-end. I built it maybe 4 years ago, which would still be before this game was released and it defaults to high settings and I run it perfectly smooth.
You went overboard with the performance around 8:00. I play this on max graphics without any issues. It's not the game's engine causing lag. However it's true, this game does take a very good computer. I run it smoothly on ultra with the Asus G73JH laptop.
It's not that the engine is flawed or not optimized, you probably have a bottleneck in your computer causing it to chug. Probably your graphics card, as this game has surprisingly good AI performance which isn't too taxing on the CPU.

@AetherEthereal Its not really like age of empires. This is a city builder game, combat is not the focus. There IS combat, but its very different to your typical RTS.

@AetherEthereal It's a lot better than age of empires, it's not just a strategy game like age of empires, it's a real -time strategy game, that means you do not only get to do battles and when it's over you have to start another match, but you get to build your towns and a lot more, it's like total war series somehow.I played the demo and i loved it(not the demo, the game).
The beginning of this video reminds me I have a game of X3:TC I keep meaning to go back to.
I had finally figured the game out, and was having a blast, or so I thought. Suddenly I realized that I needed to start building complexes, and that's where I got lost. I had already successfully built a few mines and other single-stations, but I needed to supply my fleet, and that takes some huge 'plexes. I got a bit confused and frustrated. It's intimidating. One day I'll go back and figure it out.
When you zoom out and scroll sideways and see this choppy behavior, has nothing to do with the overall performance of the game, but an issue with the scrolling. You need to turn it off and use the middle mouse button to scroll and there you go.... smooth as butter!
my PC has a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 graphics card and a Dual Core with 2.66 GHz on each processor this game runs on High settings without any lag at any zoom range
This is a brilliant game. But it's quite challenging! The fact that it is still fun with as much complexity as it has is remarkable. I can't even imagine, at this point, 'winning' the game on the hardest settings....
i have intel pentium x2 *64bits* , 2gb rami ddr2, 1gb video card nvidia 9500GT(1024/128bits) and at max setting it doesnt sync..if doesnt work as it should..it doesnt make lag..but it shakes all the way..:-s
An excellent review of my favorite PC city builder. Also, I'm running an Intel Core i3 with 4 gigs of RAM on a Windows 7 laptop running Intel Integrated Graphics and have absolutely ZERO lag or graphics issues on Medium and High. The specs on this game don't seem to be that scary, honestly. Anyone with a modern computer should run it fine. :)

Looks like a sweet game :) Been playing (all) the Settlers games recently and, even though I have a big soft spot for them, they generally fail to deliver. Anno looks like it might just take its place as my favourite city builder :)

Perhaps you would prefer something more actiony, I suggest you try watching my dawn of war 2 review. Lots more explosions and shooting, this game has none. Or, perhaps you should try getting more sleep.
@DragonMagi I think what he means is that your voice doesnt have much energy when reviewing the game, so it can seem kind of bland. If you want to get an idea of a game reviewer that has alot of talent check out seananners on youtube, the guy is amazing at making things sound interesting. I still enjoyed the review though, but if you want some constructive criticism that would be my recommendation.
What about Almond Plantations? Checked both the 1st game and the Venice upgrade, it's not available in Orient building trees as far as I can see. And yet it's in the official game's website. Am I missing something?
Ok dude i have a problem i can run everything on HIGH (O.o) with no laggs at all but at the 1st missions when you have to go to certain places with the small ship it laggs as hell when i pull it up close to it. Any ideas?
I hate quests where I have to find wanted people in your city. Even with the blue outline it can be really hard to find them, especially if you have a massive city.

Staying with Nvidia, I found the 9500 GT 1GB card in the same range. Same power supply requirements and no dedicated power line needed...runs off the mobo like my current one does. So I may grab this guy come holiday time...I've bought 2 new strategy games recently and feel too guilty indulging further this close to the holiday season.

@Kovatt2 Yah decent cards have went down quite a bit. I have several computers and a laptop. I have 2 computers with 4650 cards and I have another computer with a 9800gtx+ and I have another computer my favourite one with a 5970. i also have a laptop with a 5650 mobility card that pretty much runs as a 4650.
The cpu I have is a quad core. It's not the "i"series ones currently on the market. The one I have is from the generation before it. I went out on a limb anyway and got it today. It's only $15 so worth a shot even if it ends up not working very well.
I don't have a city builder game right now, and haven't played one in ages. I just got the "itch" and went for it. Nice vid btw...well done.
This game is on sale this weekend for only $15 through Stardock on their online distribution software "Impulse." So, I'm thinking of grabbing it, on a whim.
I've learned, either here or on another vid, that the game can be a little demanding on hardware. My computer is only a couple years old, but here are my spec's...Q6600 2.4 cpu/4GB RAM/GeForce 8600 GT 256MB Vid card/Vista(32 bit) OP...I have a Dell, so the vidcard was the best I could put into it limited by the power supply. Will it run?
@Kovatt2 im not sure what that processor is.. if its a 2.4GHz duel core then you will have some trouble, probably put it at the lower settings. be warned though, if you zoom way out you will have trouble no matter what your specs are. the zoom level you get when you press F3 is usually good. if its a single core 2.4GHz then dont even bother, you cant run it.
@DragonMagi depends, you can overclock the pentium 4 extreme verison that has hyperthreading. 3.0ghz with around 4 mb cache can pull it off. but ITS A SINGLE CORE :P!!!!!! physically at least
@Kovatt2 Hey go buy a 4650... it is a really good graphics card and your power supply should be able to take it. I believe is only around 60-120 dollars right now.
@ShelterShock Is that Nvidia or ATI chipset? This card I have is a EVGA and has been great, but it runs hot, even idle, compared to others in it's class. I understand that it is rather notorious for that, but still stable all the same. Not that I'm a big "techy" guy. I just look stuff up before I upgrade.

@Kovatt2 The game is quite intense, but on the low settings you should be alright (30 fps or so), it depends largely on what view you use. The further you zoom out the more it lags (for me anyways).
The greatest part of this game is the co-op in the expansion. I play with three other people and one works on the Orient, I work on the the northern islands, and the other does quests and controls ship battles/military. This game has consumed waaaay too many hours of our time.

once you get past the annoying initial part of figuring out how to play this game, it becomes so awesome it's ridiculous. there is great sense of fulfillment watching your 25 trade ships automatically going about their routes from 10 different islands supplying your spoiled main island nobles with all their required goods... and then watching your warships protecting those trade ships.
I would have really liked to get thiis game but when I rented it everything was black but the buildings and people. I run an I7 so it isn't a video issue.
@Halfmorne if you want to fight wars, there are much better games out there. This is a city builder game, with RTS aspects.. Not an RTS with city builder aspects.
Great information about the game, I just started playing myself and as an empire builder fan I love it!
The choppiness you mentioned when zoomed way out might be due to the cpu speed, as the further out you go the more buildings you see at once, and those buildings have to be rendered as you move around. i wonder if there's a setting called LoD, level of detail, which helps when you zoom out like that.
I was looking for anno games a few weeks ago, I found anno 1701 and thought "yay, here it is" installed it and played for 1 week til i realized I was playing an older game :(

@Ne0c225 Yeah .. but its mostly about outgrowing enemy economy .. There isn't much battle in the game .. mostly sea battles and upgrading ships etc.

The beginning of this video reminds me I have a game of X3:TC I keep meaning to go back to.
I had finally figured the game out, and was having a blast, or so I thought. Suddenly I realized that I needed to start building complexes, and that's where I got lost. I had already successfully built a few mines and other single-stations, but I needed to supply my fleet, and that takes some huge 'plexes. I got a bit confused and frustrated. It's intimidating. One day I'll go back and figure it out.

When you zoom out and scroll sideways and see this choppy behavior, has nothing to do with the overall performance of the game, but an issue with the scrolling. You need to turn it off and use the middle mouse button to scroll and there you go.... smooth as butter!

This is a brilliant game. But it's quite challenging! The fact that it is still fun with as much complexity as it has is remarkable. I can't even imagine, at this point, 'winning' the game on the hardest settings....

i have intel pentium x2 *64bits* , 2gb rami ddr2, 1gb video card nvidia 9500GT(1024/128bits) and at max setting it doesnt sync..if doesnt work as it should..it doesnt make lag..but it shakes all the way..:-s

An excellent review of my favorite PC city builder. Also, I'm running an Intel Core i3 with 4 gigs of RAM on a Windows 7 laptop running Intel Integrated Graphics and have absolutely ZERO lag or graphics issues on Medium and High. The specs on this game don't seem to be that scary, honestly. Anyone with a modern computer should run it fine. :)

Cool, cheers dude. I was looking for a review that showed me the actual gameplay of Anno. Looks like a sweet game :) Been playing (all) the Settlers games recently and, even though I have a big soft spot for them, they generally fail to deliver. Anno looks like it might just take its place as my favourite city builder :)

Perhaps you would prefer something more actiony, I suggest you try watching my dawn of war 2 review. Lots more explosions and shooting, this game has none. Or, perhaps you should try getting more sleep.

@DragonMagi I think what he means is that your voice doesnt have much energy when reviewing the game, so it can seem kind of bland. If you want to get an idea of a game reviewer that has alot of talent check out seananners on youtube, the guy is amazing at making things sound interesting. I still enjoyed the review though, but if you want some constructive criticism that would be my recommendation.

What about Almond Plantations? Checked both the 1st game and the Venice upgrade, it's not available in Orient building trees as far as I can see. And yet it's in the official game's website. Am I missing something?

Ok dude i have a problem i can run everything on HIGH (O.o) with no laggs at all but at the 1st missions when you have to go to certain places with the small ship it laggs as hell when i pull it up close to it. Any ideas?

I hate quests where I have to find wanted people in your city. Even with the blue outline it can be really hard to find them, especially if you have a massive city.

Staying with Nvidia, I found the 9500 GT 1GB card in the same range. Same power supply requirements and no dedicated power line needed...runs off the mobo like my current one does. So I may grab this guy come holiday time...I've bought 2 new strategy games recently and feel too guilty indulging further this close to the holiday season.
I need to save room for the kids in the budget ya know...hehe

@Kovatt2 Yah decent cards have went down quite a bit. I have several computers and a laptop. I have 2 computers with 4650 cards and I have another computer with a 9800gtx+ and I have another computer my favourite one with a 5970. i also have a laptop with a 5650 mobility card that pretty much runs as a 4650.

The cpu I have is a quad core. It's not the "i"series ones currently on the market. The one I have is from the generation before it. I went out on a limb anyway and got it today. It's only $15 so worth a shot even if it ends up not working very well.
I don't have a city builder game right now, and haven't played one in ages. I just got the "itch" and went for it. Nice vid btw...well done.

This game is on sale this weekend for only $15 through Stardock on their online distribution software "Impulse." So, I'm thinking of grabbing it, on a whim.
I've learned, either here or on another vid, that the game can be a little demanding on hardware. My computer is only a couple years old, but here are my spec's...Q6600 2.4 cpu/4GB RAM/GeForce 8600 GT 256MB Vid card/Vista(32 bit) OP...I have a Dell, so the vidcard was the best I could put into it limited by the power supply. Will it run?

@Kovatt2 im not sure what that processor is.. if its a 2.4GHz duel core then you will have some trouble, probably put it at the lower settings. be warned though, if you zoom way out you will have trouble no matter what your specs are. the zoom level you get when you press F3 is usually good. if its a single core 2.4GHz then dont even bother, you cant run it.

@DragonMagi depends, you can overclock the pentium 4 extreme verison that has hyperthreading. 3.0ghz with around 4 mb cache can pull it off. but ITS A SINGLE CORE :P!!!!!! physically at least

@ShelterShock Is that Nvidia or ATI chipset? This card I have is a EVGA and has been great, but it runs hot, even idle, compared to others in it's class. I understand that it is rather notorious for that, but still stable all the same. Not that I'm a big "techy" guy. I just look stuff up before I upgrade.

@Kovatt2 try this build, Amd Phenom quad 3.4GB with 8MB cache, Nividia 260 (i use a professional series from PNY) but any graphics card that is near the GTX 260 will run any games out there pretty much fine, except for simulations. get a 600 watt power supply and any ddr 2 rams you want. I also suggest getting the western digital black edition works really well if you are into gaming.

@Kovatt2 The game is quite intense, but on the low settings you should be alright (30 fps or so), it depends largely on what view you use. The further you zoom out the more it lags (for me anyways).

The greatest part of this game is the co-op in the expansion. I play with three other people and one works on the Orient, I work on the the northern islands, and the other does quests and controls ship battles/military. This game has consumed waaaay too many hours of our time.

Also, who ever didnt like this needs to have his/her computer blown up. im not joking. lol

once you get past the annoying initial part of figuring out how to play this game, it becomes so awesome it's ridiculous. there is great sense of fulfillment watching your 25 trade ships automatically going about their routes from 10 different islands supplying your spoiled main island nobles with all their required goods... and then watching your warships protecting those trade ships.

Great information about the game, I just started playing myself and as an empire builder fan I love it!
The choppiness you mentioned when zoomed way out might be due to the cpu speed, as the further out you go the more buildings you see at once, and those buildings have to be rendered as you move around. i wonder if there's a setting called LoD, level of detail, which helps when you zoom out like that.
