After the attack of Emden, in south indian port madrs and our neighbouring country sri lanka during ww1, the word ''emden'' started using in srilankan and south indian languages such as Malayalam and tamil. Sri Lankan mothers frightened their children with the Emden bogeyman, and to this day a particularly obnoxious person is referred to as an Emden. In Malayalam, ''Yumunden'' means 'a big and powerful thing' or 'a stout guy' derived from Emden following its successful attack on Madras port.

Small tip German names that have letters like ä, ö, or ü in them are pronounced as if the where writen ae, oe, or ue

Some localites if the Emden city are aware if the SMS Emdens history and they promptly offer thei apologies when they find out that I come from Madras in India. I have also checked some pictues of SMS Emden in the Fort St. Geroges Museum in Madras and they even have preserved the many shells of the bombs fired in the museum, I even have some pictures of the shells.... your video was interesting!

An amazing peice of history. I am Vani, born in Madras (the now Chennai), and strangely I ended up studying in Emden in Germany. I had seen the first pictures of SMS Emden in the Bunker Museum in Emden as it left Emden. And the port of Madras which was on of the strategic ports of the then British India whihc the SMS Emden attacked made Madras the only Indian city to be hit in the second World war.

well done. its a shame no one cares about history anymore.. this story would make an incredible hollywood made movie but it wouldnt do well in theaters because the US population is basically a bunch of fat lazy people with brain activity somewhat close to the vegetative state. the us populous cares more about american idol, entertainment news,and reality tv than important things such as politics, history and current events.

yes the emden was the only surface ship to earn the iron cross. this is without question the most famous and succesfu lcommerce raider of all time. Esp. considering the circumstances in which the emden had to deal with during her time in the indian ocean. logistically the emden had few options about where to coal. Most suitable ports were either allied ports or neutral ports that the allies have smartly guarded in order to capture the emden. Basically, the emden, captain muller were badasses
