I was recently listening to my latest eMusic downloads which included Touchstone by Donald Byrd/ Pepper Adams quintet (It was part of my Herbie Hancock worship!) and I immediately felt that I had never heard Bari sax played like that before. The best I could describe it was: it's like the guy doesn't know he's playing a bari. Ha! I also was finding what may go into my all-time top 25 albums list and a Bari player I should have known about all along. Pepper made the big horn run, jump and sing!
@FredStembottom The last point is a good one. He did make the bari run and jump.
But I am in my countrys youth band and I play the bari. Once you get used to playing it you can play it like a tenor or alto. I say that and sound cocky, I know,. And I could never be able to touch the sound that comes out of this gods sax!
Bela interpretação com muito swing.

There's a wonderful version of this tune (also live) on his album _Twelfth and Pingree_, with the great George Mraz on bass.

So gentle to hear this big horn cry.

Aside from his wonderful playing, he seemed like a genuinely nice guy.

Pep and Nick Brignola were the best bari players that ever hooked the neck strap on a bari

I figured if I liked Ronnie Cuber and Nick Brignola so much, I better go back and hear some Pepper Adams. I'm glad I did!

Superb, I think Pepper just pipped Gerry Mulligan and Serge Chaloff as best bari sax ever. His interpretations were awesome. RIP

Greatest bari player, EVER. What sax does he use?
musicman24X 2 years ago
That is more than likely a Selmer Mark 6 or a Super 80 judging by the circle ring going from the bell to the body.
